Download or read book Newsprint Metropolis written by Julia Guarneri and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Julia Guarneri's book considers turn-of-the-century newspapers in New York, Philadelphia, Milwaukee, and Chicago not just as vessels of information but as active agents in the creation of cities and of urban culture. Guarneri argues that newspapers sparked cultural, social, and economic shifts that transformed a rural republic into a nation of cities, and that transformed rural people into self-identified metropolitans and moderns. The book pays closest attention to the content and impact of "feature news," such as advice columns, neighborhood tours, women's pages, comic strips, and Sunday magazines. While papers provided a guide to individual upward mobility, they also fostered a climate of civic concern and responsibility. Editors drew in new reading audiences--women, immigrants, and working-class readers--giving rise to the diverse, contentious, and commercial public sphere of the twentieth century.

Book Haunts of the White City Ghost Stories from the World s Fair the Great Fire and Victorian Chicago

Download or read book Haunts of the White City Ghost Stories from the World s Fair the Great Fire and Victorian Chicago written by Ursula Bielski and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2019 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "At the close of the nineteenth century, Chicago offered the world a glimpse of humanity's most breathtaking possibilities and its most jaw-dropping horrors. Even as the White City emerged from the ashes of the Great Fire, serial killers like H.H. Holmes stalked the sparkling new boulevards and tragic accidents plagued the factories, slums and railroads that powered the churn of industrial innovation. Demons, mesmerists and birds of ill omen preyed on the unwary from the shadows. Ship captains spoke to the dead, while undertakers discovered reanimated corpses no longer requiring services. From posh mansions built on massacre grounds to the drowned quarries of a forest preserve, Ursula Bielski follows the dark undercurrents beneath the electric lights of the World's Fair."--

Book Bibliography of Foreign Language Newspapers and Periodicals Published in Chicago Classic Reprint

Download or read book Bibliography of Foreign Language Newspapers and Periodicals Published in Chicago Classic Reprint written by Chicago Public Library Omnibus Project and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-11 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bibliography of Foreign Language Newspapers and Periodicals Published in Chicago In listing the publications the attempt was made to include the following information: title, translation of title, frequency of issue, type of publication (newspaper or periodical), editorial policy, date of establishment, date of expiration, name of editor, name and address of publisher, and library location symbols designating holdings. Unfortunately it was not possible in every case to secure all of the above data for each item listed. The sources used in compiling this bibliography were many. All available newspaper and periodical directories, checklists, catalogs and guides were combed. Almanacs, yearbooks, and advertisers and city directories were thoroughly searched. Library lists and special bibliographies, including the Union List of Serials and Union List of Newspapers, were minutely examined. Pertinent material was gleaned from numerous histories of foreign language groups in Chicago and in the United States. Finally the private archives of various editors and publishers were checked for additional information. A few points concerning the style of listing require amplification. The titles are entered in the Latin alphabet and are arranged alphabetically, definite and indefinite articles excluded, by language. Where transliteration was necessary, it was performed in accordance with standard practices. For the benefit of the general user the titles are translated; in some cases this was done rather freely. It was not always easy to determine whether a given publication should be classed as a newspaper or periodical. The rule of thumb generally applied here was the frequency of issue and the percentage of space devoted to current news. The dates of establishment and expiration of a publication cover only its life in Chicago. In listing the name of the editor, the intention was to indicate the last person to hold that position, but in many cases this was not possible. While publications printed wholly in English are not included, those published partly in English and partly in a foreign tongue appear in this volume. Lastly, a few ephemeral items may have been listed which should possibly have been excluded. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Encyclopedia of Aesthetics

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Aesthetics written by Michael Kelly and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of the Encyclopedia of Aesthetics is an unparalleled reference resource that surveys the full breadth of critical thought on art, culture, and nature, from classical philosophy to contemporary critical theory. The four-volume first edition, published in 1998, effected a revival of aesthetics that created a receptive context for the contemporary importance of the field. Spanning six volumes and 815 articles, the new edition of the Encyclopedia has been updated and expanded to reflect the rapidly evolving character of the discipline. Renowned contributors from diverse fields provide analyses of the major artists, movements, and theories that continue to inform scholarly research on aesthetics. The updated Encyclopedia of Aesthetics contains 250 new entries that incorporate innovative fields of inquiry, such as animal aesthetics and diaspora criticism, as well as significant new developments in art, including digital media and street art. Additionally, the second edition offers enhanced coverage of non-Western cultural areas and related issues, such as post-colonialism, globalization, and primitivism. In so doing, it extends the scope of critical aesthetics, seeking to create a more open environment for aesthetics in academia, culture, and art. With bibliographic references and images, the Encyclopedia of Aesthetics is an essential work that is of use to artists, scholars, students, and all others interested in art-from painting and sculpture to literature, music, theater, film, and more.

Download or read book The Defender written by Ethan Michaeli and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2016-01-12 with total page 884 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This “extraordinary history” of the influential black newspaper is “deeply researched, elegantly written [and] a towering achievement” (Brent Staples, New York Times Book Review). In 1905, Robert S. Abbott started printing The Chicago Defender, a newspaper dedicated to condemning Jim Crow and encouraging African Americans living in the South to join the Great Migration. Smuggling hundreds of thousands of copies into the most isolated communities in the segregated South, Abbott gave voice to the voiceless, galvanized the electoral power of black America, and became one of the first black millionaires in the process. His successor wielded the newspaper’s clout to elect mayors and presidents, including Harry S. Truman and John F. Kennedy, who would have lost in 1960 if not for The Defender’s support. Drawing on dozens of interviews and extensive archival research, Ethan Michaeli constructs a revelatory narrative of journalism and race in America, bringing to life the reporters who braved lynch mobs and policemen’s clubs to do their jobs, from the age of Teddy Roosevelt to the age of Barack Obama. “[This] epic, meticulously detailed account not only reminds its readers that newspapers matter, but so do black lives, past and present.” —USA Today
