Book excerpt: This book examines the life of the remarkable Paul Newman—an iconic actor, director, race car driver, political activist, businessman, philanthropist, devoted husband, and father. Paul Leonard Newman was a true Renaissance man who is known worldwide for his performances as an actor and director. His career in the entertainment industry stretched over 50 years, as did his marriage to Joanne Woodward—an unusual and notable achievement in Hollywood. Newman was also a talented race car driver, an influential political activist, a savvy businessman, and a passionate philanthropist who created a food company that has donated more than $280 million to charities. But Newman also suffered many defeats throughout his life; he was human, just as we all are. This biography provides a chronological narrative that documents Newman's long life and myriad contributions. Information regarding his early years in Ohio, his service in the U.S. Navy during World War II, his success on the stage and screen, his work with charities and business ventures, and his exploits in auto racing is provided.

Book Newman s Challenge

Download or read book Newman s Challenge written by Stanley L. Jaki and published by William B. Eerdmans Publishing Company. This book was released on 2000 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of John Henry Cardinal Newman (1801-1890) confronts a variety of misperceptions of the famous English bishop, especially those that diminish Newman's deep appreciation of the supernatural. As Stanley Jaki writes, "Newman's chief challenge today, as in his times, aims at the defense of the supernatural". Jaki shows that such a defense was, for Newman, far more than a simple intellectual enterprise. For Newman, the supernatural was above all a spiritual challenge of the profoundest sort. In this volume Jaki begins with an overview of the challenge that Newman set for himself and for the church. Jaki then unfolds this challenge across a dozen key topics drawn from Newman's writings. Jaki shows that much as the topics of original sin, angels, miracles, Anglo-Catholicism, conversion, and papacy may differ from those of assent, science, evolution, and history, they all bespeak Newman's total engagement with the concretely given supernatural.

Book John Henry Newman

Download or read book John Henry Newman written by David Nicholls and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Henry Newman (1801–1890) was very much a man of his time—an eminent Victorian philosopher and theologian who formed part of an influential Romantic movement in literature, art, and architecture. A central figure in the Tractarian movement of the 1830s and 1840s, he reasserted the Catholic doctrines and practices of the Church of England against the strongly Erastian tendencies of the time, and the culmination of these ideas led to what was perhaps his most notorious work, "Tract 90," in which he claimed that the Thirty-nine Articles of the Church of England could be interpreted from a Catholic viewpoint. In 1845 he was received into the Roman Catholic church, and since his "rediscovery" by fellow Catholics after the First World War there has been a well-organized campaign for his canonization as a saint. Newman’s writings have commanded interest from across the disciplines of literature, philosophy, and theology, but many critical assessments of his life and works have been accused of bowing to the mythology that has built up around Newman and his fellow Tractarians. This book offers a more challenging appraisal of Newman’s life and thought.

Book Passion for Truth

Download or read book Passion for Truth written by Rev. Fr. Juan R. Velez and published by TAN Books. This book was released on 2011-12 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In "Passion for Truth", author and scholar Fr. Juan R. Vélez painstakingly uncovers the life and work of Blessed John Henry Newman. In the story of his early years, his family upbringing and university education, and through his vast correspondence with family, friends, and colleagues, Vélez acquaints us with Newman, the loyal friend, profound thinker, prolific writer, and holy priest. A true Catholic gentleman, who can be admired and loved by all who love the Truth.Newman was a talented but timid young man, who often doubted his own competence, but was to become one of the most influential teachers and writers of the 19th Century.Starting life as a devout and promising Anglican scholar, he finished the race a faithful and unwavering Catholic priest and Cardinal, to the disappointment of some of his closest friends and the great joy of many others. His prominent position as an Anglican clergyman and Oxford don made his long anticipated conversion the subject of great interest to many of his contemporaries and once he crossed over to Rome, many Anglicans followed his lead. His clarity of thought as a scholar was such as is hardly seen in contemporary society and was even growing rare in his own day.A relentless pursuit of wisdom did not allow him to simply store away his knowledge but urged him to conform his life to what was true wherever and whenever he discovered it. This passion for Truth did not always gain him friends, but it ultimately gained him what he valued above all else: a home in the True Church of Christ.
