Book John Henry Newman

Download or read book John Henry Newman written by Frank M. Turner and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2001-12-01 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is Kenneth Starr's extraordinary term as independent counsel to be understood? Was he a partisan warrior out to get the Clintons, or a saviour of the Republic? An unstoppable menace, an unethical lawyer, or a sex-obsessed Puritan striving to enforce a right-wing social morality? This volume is designed to offer an evaluation and critique of Starr's tenure as independent counsel. Relying on lengthy, revealing interviews with Starr and many other players in Clinton-era Washington, Washington Post journalist Benjamin Wittes arrives at an understanding of Starr and the part he played in one of American history's most enthralling public sagas. Wittes offers a portrait of a decent man who fundamentally misconstrued his function under the independent counsel law. Starr took his task to be ferreting out and reporting the truth about official misconduct, a well-intentioned but nevertheless misguided distortion of the law, Wittes argues. At key moments throughout Starr's probe - from the decision to reinvestigate the death of Vincent Foster, to the repeated prosecutions of Susan McDougal and Webster Hubbell to the failure to secure Monica Lewinsky's testimony quickly - the prosecutor avoided the most sensible prosecutorial course, fearing that it would compromise the larger search for truth. This approach not only delayed investigations enormously, but it gave Starr the appearance of partisan zealotry and an almost maniacal determination to prosecute the president. Wittes provides in this account of Starr's term a reinterpretation of the man, his performance, and the controversial events that surrounded the impeachment of President Clinton.

Book Apologia Pro Beata Maria Virgine

Download or read book Apologia Pro Beata Maria Virgine written by Robert M. Andrews and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apologia Pro Beata Maria Virgine: John Henry Newman's Defence of the Virgin Mary in Catholic Doctrine and Piety represents a discussion of a theme within John Henry Newman's Mariology: namely, his apologetic defence of the place of the Virgin Mary in Catholic doctrine and piety. Newman is not instinctively known as a Marian theologian or apologist, but he should be. This book shows how Newman possessed a highly developed Mariology--one that grew out of his Anglican background and that developed into his life as a Catholic priest. Based upon Scripture and the Church Fathers, Newman's thought on the place of the Virgin Mary in the life and faith of Catholicism was, like much of his theology, ahead of its time and frequently out of step with the nineteenth-century Catholic milieu he lived within. This study of Newman's defence of Catholic Mariology and its place in Catholic piety is achieved through an examination of some of Newman's Anglican sermons, his influential Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine (1845), some of his private correspondence and, finally, his 1866 published reply to his old friend, Edward Bouverie Pusey, the Letter to Pusey. From a discussion of these texts, this book argues that Newman's Mariology was both unique in its day and has proved prophetic in directing the future direction of Catholic Mariology--especially in its ability to provide an orthodox commentary on the more effusive elements of Marian piety within Catholicism. Patristic and restrained in its pious expressions, Newman's Mariology had connections with both his Anglican past and the native Recusant context he made contact with when he became a Catholic in 1845, in addition to providing an important critique of the ultramontane influences then making their way into Victorian Catholic life. For Newman, the Virgin Mary--rightly understood in her biblical and patristic context--was the 'pattern of faith', a theological model for Catholics to emulate and use when explaining the Catholic religion to others.

This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Still considered essential reading for serious thinkers on religion more than a century and a half after it was written, this seminal work of modern theology, first published in 1845, presents a history of Catholic doctrine from the days of the Apostles to the time of its writing, and follows with specific examples of how the doctrine has not only survived corruption but grown stronger through defending itself against it, and is, therefore, the true religion. This classic of Christian apologetics, considered a foundational work of 19th-century intellectualism on par with Darwin's Origin of Species, is must reading not only for the faithful but also for anyone who wishes to be well educated in the fundamentals of modern thought.

This book was released on 2021-05-11 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Apologia Pro Vita Sua is John Henry Newman's defence of his religious opinions, published in 1864 in response to Charles Kingsley of the Church of England after Newman quit his position as the Anglican vicar of St. Mary's, Oxford. Friction during the years from 1833 to 1841 had led Newman and his allies in the Oxford Movement to publish a statement, the Tracts for the Times, to which Newman was a contributor. The tensions culminated in Newman's 1845 resignation as Anglican vicar of St. Mary's, Oxford and his departure from the Anglican church and conversion to Roman Catholicism.[1]Newman's essay was written in response to attacks from Charles Kingsley of the broad church party, and Newman's rival in the controversy surrounding the Tractarian movement, who responded to Newman's conversion with attacks impeaching his truthfulness and honor.[1] Apologia Pro Vita Sua was a spiritual autobiographical defense to Kingsley's attacks. The book became a bestseller, and remains in print today. A revised version of the Apologia Pro Vita Sua with many passages rewritten and some parts omitted, was published in 1865.[2]Margaret Atwood's 2019 novel The Testaments refers to the book in that one of the main characters (Aunt Lydia) secrets her own defence (""The Ardua Hall Holograph"") within its pages"
