Book Newman Hall

Download or read book Newman Hall written by Hall Newman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Newman Hall: An Autobiography The first use of my pen on this morning of my eighty-first birthday (May 22, 1897) is to commence a narration which has often been solicited by personal friends, and which may interest and possibly benefit others to whom my name is more or less familiar. On this day what more natural than reference to the parents to whom I owe my birth, and whose character has influenced my whole life? Even a stream, small and insignificant, with no place in history or atlas, may irrigate some meadow where sheep and cattle quietly pasture and where daisies smile - a silent stream, fringed here and there with forget-me-nots, helping to swell the river in which it seems to be lost on its way to the ocean. The character of the parents influences that of the children. My father, John Vine Hall, was born in a cottage home at Diss, in 1774, and at eleven years of age was sent as an apprentice to Mr. Blake, bookseller and printer at Maidstone, and proprietor of the Maidstone Journal, the oldest Tory paper in Kent. How he became chief assistant there, took a business in Worcester, won for his wife Miss Mary Teverill, and in 1814 returned to Maidstone, where I was born, as proprietor where he had begun life as junior servant - all this has been described in his autobiography. Book excerpt: This autumn, life is catching up with Thomas Quinn. Five years ago, his sometime friend Andrew Black wrote a mystery novel that sold a million copies and then disappeared. Now could it be that Quinn is being stalked by the hero of Black’s book? His wife, Imogen, usually has the answers, but she’s working on the other side of the world and talking to her on webcam just isn’t the same. Quinn finds himself in a world that might well be coming apart at the seams. If he can find Black, he might start finding answers. Maxwell’s Demon forges an entirely new blend of mystery—somewhere between detective fiction, ghost story and philosophical quest. Providing the same white-knuckle thrills as Hall’s first novel, The Raw Shark Texts, this new book is also a freewheeling investigation into the magic power locked inside the alphabet, love through the looking glass, the bond between parents and children and, at its heart, the quest for meaning in a world that, with each passing season, seems to become more chaotic and untidy.

Book The Dissenters

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael R. Watts
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford
  • Release : 2015-03-19
  • ISBN : 0191017566
  • Pages : 512 pages

Download or read book The Dissenters written by Michael R. Watts and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2015-03-19 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third and final volume of Michael Watts's study of dissent examines the turbulent times of Victorian Nonconformity, a period of faith and of doubt. Watts assesses the impacts of the major Dissenting preachers and provides insights into the various movements, such as romanticism and the higher, often German, biblical criticism. He shows that the preaching of hell and eternal damnation was more effective in recruiting to the chapels than the gentler interpretations. A major feature of the volume is a thorough analysis of surviving records of attendance at Nonconformist services. He provides fascinating accounts of Spurgeon and the other key figures of Nonconformity, including of the Salvation Army. Dr Watts also provides a fresh discussion of the contribution which Nonconformity made to the politics of mid- to late-Victorian Britain. He examines such issues of reform as Forster's Education Act of 1871, temperance, and Balfour's Education Act of 1902, and considers Nonconformist interventions in such controversies as the Bulgarian Agitation, Home Rule for Ireland, the Armenian massacres of the mid 1890s, and the Boer War. The volume concludes with the Liberal landslide in the 1906 general election, which saw probably more Nonconformists elected than any time since the era of Oliver Cromwell.
