Book Discovering the Riches of the Word

Download or read book Discovering the Riches of the Word written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-02-24 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributions to Discovering the Riches of the Word. Religious Reading in Late Medieval and Early Modern Europe offer an innovative approach to the study of religious reading from a long term and geographically broad perspective, covering the period from the thirteenth to the seventeenth century and with a specific focus on the fifteenth and the sixteenth centuries. Challenging traditional research paradigms, the contributions argue that religious reading in this “long fifteenth century” should be described in terms of continuity. They make clear that in spite of confessional divides, numerous reading practices continued to exist among medieval and early modern readers, as well as among Catholics and Protestants, and that the two groups in certain cases even shared the same religious texts. Contributors include: Elise Boillet, Sabrina Corbellini, Suzan Folkerts, Éléonore Fournié, Wim François, Margriet Hoogvliet, Ian Johnson, Hubert Meeus, Matti Peikola, Bart Ramakers, Elisabeth Salter, Lucy Wooding, and Federico Zuliani.

Book Pages and Leaflets of North Oxfordshire

Download or read book Pages and Leaflets of North Oxfordshire written by Angela Fortnum and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2018 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every family has a story. And for Angela Fortnum, her maternal family story would begin eight generations before her and reach back to the turn of the eighteenth century in England—and it is a story that she will tell and continue today. In Pages and Leaflets of North Oxfordshire, author Angela Fortnum shares a well-researched family history of her maternal grandfathers, offering a compelling window into the life and times of her ancestors. This history chronicles the Page family’s shift from agricultural and labourer life to self-employment and small holding, and it also lists the changes in the family’s religious beliefs over time. Angela includes as well a discussion of the richness and diversity of the church and chapel buildings that were linked in some way to her family, each of which tells a story of their own. In the end, the story of the Page family lives on today, as Pages and Leaflets of North Oxfordshire stands as a legacy to Angela and her mother’s family and the great changes they experienced over the centuries.

Book Buildings and Landmarks of Medieval Europe

Download or read book Buildings and Landmarks of Medieval Europe written by James B. Tschen-Emmons and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2016-11-14 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the use of images, diagrams, and detailed descriptions, this book enables readers to appreciate how the construction, design, and function of famous structures inform our understanding of societies of the past. Buildings and Landmarks of Medieval Europe: The Middle Ages Revealed makes use of significant buildings as "representative structures" to provide insight into specific cultures, historical periods, or topics of the Middle Ages. The explanations of these buildings' construction, original intended use and change over time, and design elements allow readers to better comprehend what life in European societies of the past was like, covering social, political, economic, and intellectual perspectives. Readers will be able to apply what they learn from the discussions of the structures to improve their understanding of the historical period as well as their skills of observation and assessment needed to analyze these landmark structures and draw meaningful conclusions about their context and significance. The book's supporting features—a chronology, biographical appendix, glossary, and subject index—help researchers in successfully completing their papers or projects.

Book Poor Relief in England 1350 1600

Download or read book Poor Relief in England 1350 1600 written by Marjorie Keniston McIntosh and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-12-15 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the mid-fourteenth century and the Poor Laws of 1598 and 1601, English poor relief moved toward a more coherent and comprehensive network of support. Marjorie McIntosh's study, the first to trace developments across that time span, focuses on three types of assistance: licensed begging and the solicitation of charitable alms; hospitals and almshouses for the bedridden and elderly; and the aid given by parishes. It explores changing conceptions of poverty and charity and altered roles for the church, state and private organizations in the provision of relief. The study highlights the creativity of local people in responding to poverty, cooperation between national levels of government, the problems of fraud and negligence, and mounting concern with proper supervision and accounting. This ground-breaking work challenges existing accounts of the Poor Laws, showing that they addressed problems with forms of aid already in use rather than creating a new system of relief.

Book English Episcopal Acta 31 Ely 1109 1197

Download or read book English Episcopal Acta 31 Ely 1109 1197 written by Nicholas Karn and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005-12-15 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 170 acta published in this volume provide one of the best records of the structuring of a new diocese and the establishment of a cathedral chapter. The diocese of Ely (comprising historic Cambridgeshire) was founded in 1109, and its first four bishops oversaw the elaboration of a system of local ecclesiastical government, and also the formulation of a settlement between themselves and the Benedictine monks of Ely, whose church became the cathedral. Two of the bishops also held high secular office - William de Longchamp was effective regent of England while King Richard I was on Crusade - and the acta issued in connection with these duties shed light on the delegation of royal power.
