This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Newfoundland Twenty-two years ago the enterprise of Horace Marshall Son produced a series of small books known as The Story of the Empire Series. These volumes rendered a great service in bringing home to the citizens of the Empire in a simple and intelligible form their community of interest, and the romantic history of the development of the British Empire. I was asked more than twenty-one years ago to write the volume which dealt with Newfound land. I did so. The little book which was the result has been for many years out of print. I have been asked by my friends in Newfoundland and elsewhere to bring it up to date for the purpose of a Second Edition. The publishers assented to this proposal, and this volume is the result. Book Newfoundland Classic Reprint

Download or read book Newfoundland Classic Reprint written by Ford Fairford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Newfoundland Upon first looking at the map of the Colony, you are at once impressed by the similarity of its physical features to England or Scotland. If you were to cut of? The two peninsulas at the south-east corner, from Trinity Bay to Fortune Bay, the remaining land would not be at all unlike England. The coast of Newfoundland is extremely rugged, and you will get an idea of the number and size of the bays if you bear in mind that the coast-line at present, measured from headland to headland, is about miles; Whereas, if the bays were straightened out, there would be a coast-line of probably miles. Some of the bays are very deep, and the huge, high rocks towering above them present a picturesque and majestic appearance. There is, perhaps, no country in the world that has such secure natural harbours. These land-locked harbours are a great boon to the fishermen, for when the long, rolling waves of the Atlantic are eager to devour any vessels that may be in their way, the slender craft of the fishermen are securely nestled between a couple of immovable jutting headlands. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brothers of Peril: A Story of Old Newfoundland During the three centuries directly fallowing John Cabot's discovery of Newfoundland, that unfortunate island was the sport of careless kings, selfish adventurers, and diligent pirates. While England, France, Spain, and Portugal were busy with courts and kings, and with spectacular battles, their fishermen and adventurers toiled together and fought together about the misty headlands of that far island. Fish, not glory, was their quest! Full cargoes, sweetly cured, was their desire - and let fame go hang! The merchants of England undertook the guardianship of the "Newfounde Land." In greed, in valour, and in achievement they won their mastery. Their greed was a two-edged sword which cut all 'round. It hounded the aborigines; it bullied the men of France and Spain; it discouraged the settlement of the land by stout hearts of whatever nationality. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harbor Jim of Newfoundland There's Harbor Jim! And Bob pointed over his shoulder in the direction of the boat as he Spoke the words. It gave me a thrill, as the light brought him sharply to my attention, to see him standing there, intently looking toward the harbor entrance. I looked from the shore even as he looked from his boat and the sun at that moment uncovered the rocks on both sides. He lifted his hand and the helper behind him brought the sail to the faint breeze that was springing up, and the boat headed for the harbor entrance and the open sea. The sun seemed to lift Bob's spirit and the sight of Harbor Jim to warm the cockles of his heart, for he began in a good-natured draw] to tell me of the finding of his friend. It was the third week in March, eleven years ago, come next spring, that we were sealing down North. Harbor Jim and I were then on Cap'en Boynton's ship. I didn't know Jim then more'n any other fellow. It was an odd kind of a trip. For days it hung nasty and we couldn't have seen a seal if he had been within shot of us. Book Newfoundland and Its Untrodden Ways Classic Reprint

Download or read book Newfoundland and Its Untrodden Ways Classic Reprint written by John Guille Millais and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Newfoundland and Its Untrodden Ways The centuries roll by, but our primal passions to chase and overcome the beasts of the field are just the same as when Fingal cried, The desert is enough for me with all its woods and deer. In his mythological creed the Gael believed that the Spirits of the Dead found delight in pur suing aerial deer over the mountains of the Silent land, as well as those of the earth. The poet Ossian, too, says The departed children of earth pursue deer formed of clouds, and bend their airy bow. They still love the sport Of their youth, and mount the wind with joy. Spiritualists tell us that in the future state we shall continue to lead the lives we have lived here, but with greater joy and wider scope. If this is so, the pleasure of Chasing herds of giant megaceros on the astral plane will be no little consolation in the Great Unknown. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Five Months in Labrador and Newfoundland: During the Summer of 1838 When a new publication is offered to the reading community, the inquiry naturally arises, who is the author ? and, what are his motives in writing? Both these inquiries I will endeavor to answer as briefly as possible. In the spring of 1834, agreeably to previous impressions of duty, I entered upon a course of study, preparatory to the work of the gospel ministry. Having no friends, whose worldly circumstances enabled them to afford me the means of pursuing an education, I was thrown entirely upon my own resources. It cancels the previous editions, all supplements, and all Hydrographic Office notices to mariners which relate to Newfoundland and the Labrador coast up to and including number 18 of 1909. The cardinal and intercardinal points of the compass, when employed, are used only as names to express general directions, such as the general trend of the land and the directions of winds and currents. Values of the variation of the compass may be obtained from the chart of the variation of the compass at the beginning of this book. The directions of the winds refer to the points from which they blow; of the currents, the points toward which they set. Distances are expressed in nautical miles, the mile being approximately 2,000 yards. The soundings are referred to mean low water, unless otherwise stated.
