Book Newfoundland in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries

Download or read book Newfoundland in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries written by James Hiller and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1980-12-15 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive history of Newfoundland was published in 1793, but a centenary and a half passed before the first university course in the history of the island was offered there. During the past fifteen years there has been growing activity in the subject. This volume is the work of six scholars who have either studied or taught at the Memorial University of Newfoundland. Some have done both. The book has two broad aims. First, to point out the major themes of modern Newfoundland history currently being examined, and to offer a number of new interpretations of economic and political development in the last two centuries. Second, to supplement the standard works that are readily available to students. In some areas it provides additional details; in others, it bridges wide gaps. The themes considered include: an introduction to the writing of Newfoundland history; the transition from the purely maritime economy of the nineteenth century to the mixed oceanic and inland resource economy of the twentieth, and the difficulties this involved; the decline of the traditional cod fishery in the nineteenth century; Newfoundland's rejection of confederation in 1896; the limitations imposed by the fisheries agreements Britain negotiated with France and the United States; the consequences of the decision to reject confederation and diversify the local economy; the growth of the Fisherman's Protective Union; the political atmosphere of the 1920s; the party politics in the post-confederation period; and, finally, the collapse of Newfoundland's oldest industry, the saltfish trade, and the province's integration into the North American economy. This is a book intended for both regional specialists and general students of Canadian history. It provides a valuable resource about a province of rapidly growing importance.

Book excerpt: How do you begin to write an art history and what are the vital questions to ask? Which marks are most prominent in the visual culture of a particular place, and which are nearly invisible? In Future Possible (a riff on an Andy Jones monologue about how Newfoundlanders talk about their future, an attitude which he describes as "Future possible, possibly horrible"), Mireille Eagan and writers and artists such as Heather Igloliorte, Lisa Moore, Andy Jones, and Craig Francis Power navigate the tangled histories and cultures of Newfoundland and Labrador to investigate the visual output and to write the narrative that it has created. The result is an ambitious volume, arising from a two-part exhibition of the same name at The Rooms, that provides a multi-vocal, multi-faceted history spanning pre- and post-Confederation Newfoundland. Lavishly illustrated with 180 images of art and objects from the province's visual history, Future Possible features essays by curators and artists on topics such as pre-Confederation art; contemporary art, craft, and Indigenous culture; and outsider and folk art. This intriguing volume places artifacts from the province's history and work by iconic Newfoundland and Labrador artists such as David Blackwood and Helen Parsons Shepherd in conversation with works by contemporary artists like Jordan Bennett and Kym Greeley. Together they explore how history is told and retold through objects and images and how these objects and images, and the power structures that preserve them, define an understanding of place.

Book Newfoundland the Oldest British Colony Its History

Download or read book Newfoundland the Oldest British Colony Its History written by Joseph Hatton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Newfoundland, the Oldest British Colony Its History: Its Present Condition, and Its Prospects in the Future Men flying from troubles at home, unfortunate traders, exiles for conscience sake, adventurers to whom settled government means chains and shackles; these and such like found shelter in Newfoundland. By degrees, as the laws relaxed in regard to settlement, and the tyranny of the Fishing Admirals waned, the population grew from a few hundred families to a few thousands. With the broadening of the opportunities of labour and enterprise, it increased, from eighty thousand in 1814, to something approaching, at the present time, two hundred thousand. Little better than a mere fishing village up to the end of the last century, Newfoundland is to-day a thriving community. The time is not far distant when it may rival, in wealth and status, the most important of England's colonial possessions.
