Book excerpt: The status of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) stocks of Newfoundland and Labrador was determined using information on annual returns to rivers and spawning escapements relative to conservation requirements, abundance of smolts and trends in marine survival. Overall, of 22 rivers in insular Newfoundland assessed relative to conservation requirements, 14 stocks met or exceeded their requirements, one river was at 65% of conservation, while 7 rivers were at 50% or less than their spawning requirements. Of the latter rivers, three were located in Bay St. George (SFA 13), while three others were enhanced stocks that have been, or are undergoing colonization programs. Some salmon populations continue to remain at low levels of abundance, while others that have experienced increased spawning escapements, have shown no enhanced adult production resulting from this increase in the number of spawners. Marine survival remains low. Limited information from Labrador indicated that while salmon runs were generally low overall, numbers increased over previous years as evidenced by returns to two counting facilities. Factors potentially contributing to low abundance of some stocks and overall poor marine survival are identified along with suggestions as to how some of the factors could be further investigated.

Book excerpt: Three of the four (75%) monitored rivers in Labrador and eight of the 12 (67%) monitored rivers in Newfoundland (excludes Rocky River) achieved conservation in 2015. Salmon returns to Newfoundland and Labrador rivers have increased since the closure of the commercial salmon fisheries, with the exception of some rivers on Newfoundland's south coast. In general, annual returns of Atlantic Salmon are highly variable and populations on the south coast continue to decline. The Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) designated South Newfoundland (SFAs 9-12) Atlantic Salmon populations as threatened in 2010 (COSEWIC 2010). Marine survival is considered to be a major factor limiting the abundance of Atlantic Salmon within the region.

Book excerpt: The Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) has occupied a salient position in the history of eastern North America for at least the past 1000 years. Initially the species occupied a prominant niche in the prolific web of life that existed throughout its former occurrence area; millions of pounds of salmon were produced annually from the freshwater streams between New York and Ungava - a resource that was a principal food source for the Amerindian cultures which shared its range. In a chronological and cumulative way, the salmon became an increasingly important factor in both the domestic and commercial life of the developing colonies; it provided a recreational outlet for the sportsman, and evolved as a principal object of intellectual and scientific investigation. The documented specifics of the salmon's history, however, are largely comprised of repetitive instances of overexploitation, careless destruction of stocks and their environment, and ineffectual conservation actions. Despite the species' former importance, its more recent history is one of declining presence, and its destiny appears to be extinction. By documenting this story of discovery, exploitation, and decline, the urgent need for the employment of sound resource management practices to preserve the salmon is emphasized.
