Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considered a wonder of the ancient world, the Newark Earthworks—the gigantic geometrical mounds of earth built nearly two thousand years ago in the Ohio valley--have been a focal point for archaeologists and surveyors, researchers and scholars for almost two centuries. In their prime one of the premier pilgrimage destinations in North America, these monuments are believed to have been ceremonial centers used by ancestors of Native Americans, called the "Hopewell culture," as social gathering places, religious shrines, pilgrimage sites, and astronomical observatories. Yet much of this territory has been destroyed by the city of Newark, and the site currently "hosts" a private golf course, making it largely inaccessible to the public. The first book-length volume devoted to the site, The Newark Earthworks reveals the magnitude and the geometric precision of what remains of the earthworks and the site’s undeniable importance to our history. Including contributions from archaeologists, historians, cultural geographers, and cartographers, as well as scholars in religious studies, legal studies, indigenous studies, and preservation studies, the book follows an interdisciplinary approach to shine light on the Newark Earthworks and argues compellingly for its designation as a World Heritage Site.

Book A Short History of Newark

Download or read book A Short History of Newark written by Frank J. Urquhart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Newark This work originally appeared in three small pamphlets, written at the request of the Newark Free Public Library, and published by it.The library desired the work because there was in print no brief history of the city which could purchase and hand to the many people - both old and young - who were constantly asking for something of the kind. It has now been completely recast and enlarged. More space is given in it to the early history of Newark than to the last half century. It is far easier for the average citizen to familiarize himself with the growth and development of his city during the times close to his own than it is to learn of its early days, when there were few newspapers and periodicals and when people did not write down their observations, experiences and ideas with anything like the frequency they do so now. If one would clearly understand how the Newark of to-day grew to be what it now is, he must learn of its beginnings and of the forces that formed it during its first century and a half. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From irrefutable icons (Broadway theaters, Central Park, SoHo, Carnegie Hall), to lesser-known structures including the Cyclone rollercoaster on Coney Island, roughly one hundred street lampposts, and seven cast-iron street clocks throughout the city—much of what makes New York City unique owes its existence to the New York City Landmarks Law. Born out of the destruction of McKim, Mead & White’s monumental Pennsylvania Station, the Landmarks Law established the parameters for protecting the places that represent New York City’s rich cultural, social, political, and architectural history. Today there are more than 31,000 landmark properties woven into daily life, many located in 111 historic districts in Manhattan, the Bronx, Staten Island, Brooklyn, and Queens—including 1,347 individual buildings, 117 interior landmarks, and 10 scenic landmarks. Published in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the passage of the Landmarks Law, and a major exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York, Saving Place tells its story in essays by notable New Yorkers and preservationists Robert A.M. Stern, Adele Chatfield-Taylor, Andrew S. Dolkart, Françoise Bollack, Anthony C. Wood, and Claudette Brady: its first successes (the Astor Library, now home to The Public Theater), its failures (the Metropolitan Opera House), and its most dramatic turning points, including the Grand Central Terminal case decided in the U.S. Supreme Court in 1978. It evaluates contemporary additions to landmarks (the Hearst Tower, the Jewish Museum), and new buildings in historic districts including Greenwich Village and South Street Seaport. The book includes specially commissioned portfolios of views of historic districts and landmark buildings by the distinguished Dutch architectural photographer Iwan Baan. Encompassing all five boroughs, from Bedford-Stuyvesant to Jackson Heights, these images capture the landmarks at work, historic markers that play a vital role in the fabric of their neighborhoods today. What is built, what is demolished, what is preserved—all determine the character and future of the city. A veritable roll call of the places that we could not imagine life without, and an incredible invocation of the many that are gone already, Saving Place will appeal to anyone inspired by New York City.

Book NEWARK IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS O

Download or read book NEWARK IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS O written by Newark Board of Education and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-05 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Newark in the Public Schools of Newark: A Course of Study on Newark, Its Geography, Civics and History, With Biographical Sketches and a Reference Index The November Round Table was devoted to the ques tion of how to give greater prominence in our schools to Newark; to its history, growth, and government; to its libraries, parks, playgrounds, and educational system; to its advantages for commerce, manufactures, and resi dence. The opening of the New York tunnels, the projected ship canal, the assured reclamation of the Newark Meadows and their suitability for great business enter prises needing transportation facilities by land and sea, the sharp rise in real estate values throughout the city and the suburbs, the erection of new high schools, and the universal demand for industrial training - all point unmistakably to the dawn of a new day for Newark. These questions come within the scope of the new definition of patriotism as a sentiment that begins at home and regards the conservation of all home resources of health, happiness, business, good government, and, above all, of sound minds and sound bodies in our chil dren, as a question touching the citizen far more closely and laying on him a far more pressing duty than the conservation of water rights in Montana or of coal fields in Alaska. It is for us to see that our city is not without honor among its own children, and also to see that they have this new patriotism and the larger vision fitting them to grapple with and master the civic problems of the future which is theirs.
