Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Selected Issues paper examines saving trends in New Zealand. The paper highlights that although national saving has risen since the early 1990s, it remains below the levels recorded in the early 1980s, and the increase has been insufficient to finance the additional investment expenditure that has been encouraged by the strong economic performance in recent years. Further, national saving in New Zealand remains below the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) country average, as it has been throughout the 1980s and 1990s. This paper also examines pension reform in New Zealand.

The increase in net public saving in the country explains part of the reason for lower net private saving in New Zealand. Net public saving of the country is about 3 percent of GDP above the average of advanced countries for the past 15 years. Financial liberalization also appears to have played a role in saving behavior.

Book excerpt: This 2006 Article IV Consultation highlights that following a vigorous expansion in recent years, a cyclical slowing in New Zealand’s economy commenced in 2005, with growth declining to 21⁄4 percent. Economic growth had averaged 41⁄4 percent annually in 2002–04, with domestic demand boosted by large migration inflows, wealth effects from rising housing prices, and income effects from high commodity prices. With slower growth easing resource pressures, inflation is expected to moderate, allowing an eventual easing in monetary policy.

This book was released on 2016-02-08 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper discusses prospects for potential growth, house prices, household debt, and financial stability risks, and tax policy reforms in New Zealand. Despite having world-class institutions and strong policy framework, income levels remain low relative to other Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries. During 1980–2014, per capita income levels have remained about 20 percent below the OECD's average income. Longstanding structural issues need to be addressed to boost potential growth. House prices and household debt have increased rapidly in New Zealand over the past two decades. New Zealand's low national saving rate is a source of vulnerability and likely contributes to the relatively high interest rates needed to attract foreign capital.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Selected Issues paper and Statistical Appendix examines the relationship between investment and long-term growth in Fiji. It reviews Fijian data, and indicates that the slowdown in the growth rate since independence has been associated with a decline in investment, particularly by the private sector. The paper reviews empirical research on the link between investment and growth, and presents additional evidence for the linkage in the context of Small Island Economies (SIEs) in which tourism plays a major role.
