Book New Zealand s Vietnam War

Download or read book New Zealand s Vietnam War written by Ian McGibbon and published by Exisle Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-18 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark publication provides a comprehensive and authoritative account of New Zealand's involvement in the Vietnam War, and will remain the standard reference work on the subject for decades. Its publication completes the programme of official war histories that began in 1945. Ian McGibbon's primary focus is what New Zealand did in South Vietnam. He traces in detail the operations carried out by New Zealand forces and seeks to illuminate the experience of New Zealand soldiers fighting in a guerrilla war. The command structure, logistic support and operational context of fighting within a primarily Australian framework are all covered. He addresses controversial aspects such as friendly fire incidents, atrocity allegations and veterans' grievances, including over Agent Orange. Maori participation in V Force was substantial and its impact is assessed. Although the book is inevitably weighted towards the military, the efforts of civilians in South Vietnam are also covered in depth. The surgical team operated from 1963 until their evacuation from Qui Nhon just days before North Vietnamese columns entered the city. Not forgotten are the efforts of courageous civilians like Sister Mary Laurence and of Red Cross volunteers to alleviate misery among refugees. The book also describes the dramatic end of New Zealand's involvement in South Vietnam – with the surgical team and the New Zealand Embassy evacuated by RNZAF Bristol Freighters just before the communist victory. Finally, McGibbon surveys the war's troubled aftermath, culminating in the Prime Minister's apology to veterans in 2008.

Book New Zealand and the Vietnam War

Download or read book New Zealand and the Vietnam War written by Roberto Rabel and published by Auckland University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting with the first Indochina War in the 1950s, this historical analysis covers the story of New Zealand's relations with Vietnam up to the end of the Vietnam War in the 1970s. Exploring the diplomatic history of the engagement, which is not well known or understood, and showing that New Zealand officials and politicians in fact entered the war with extreme reluctance, this describes how the dispatch of troops to Vietnam divided the country, enraged a generation, and forced the government to publicly defend its policy. Readers quickly discover that the fallout from the Vietnam conflict still affects New Zealand's position today—from its well-known antinuclear stance to its position over the recent Iraq conflict.

Book Independence and Foreign Policy

Download or read book Independence and Foreign Policy written by Malcolm McKinnon and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1993 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is the first interpretive study of New Zealand over the period 1935-1991. It is based on years of research but it is also an original and thought provoking work which consistently takes a broader view. Malcolm McKinnon looks critically at the idea of independence in New Zealand's foreign policy, exploring the way New Zealanders thought about independence as well as the kinds of independence most commonly pursued and their implications in practice. He considers economic as well as political international relations; and he does not limit himself to official sources -- New Zealand public opinion plays an important role. While the focus of the first part of the book is the Second World War, the later chapters give illuminating insights into some recent issues in New Zealand foreign policy, such as the Vietnam War, relations with South Africa and the Pacific, and the anti-nuclear movement." -- Back cover.

Book excerpt: Confronting Sukarno examines the regional and international implications of the Malaysian-Indonesian Confrontation, a crisis more popularly known as Konfrontasi. By doing so, fundamental themes concerning the Asian Cold War are discussed. In particular, the concern of western policy makers with an increasingly belligerent communist China, the importance of Konfrontasi to the war in Vietnam and the British 'role' east of Suez, are all examined in detail. Being a work of international history, the book draws extensively from recently de-classified documents in the United States, Britain, Australia and New Zealand.

Book The Practice of Power

Download or read book The Practice of Power written by Rosemary Foot and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1995-09-21 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This absorbing study examines the change in American relations with China after 1949 from hostility to rapproachement, and to full normalization of the ties in 1979. Rosemary Foot goes on to examine the relationship after normalization, a period when the United States has come to view China as less of a challenge but still resistant to certain of the norms of the current international order. The book begins by examining US efforts to build, and then maintain an international and domestic consensus behind its China policy. It then looks at changing US perceptions of the capabilities of the Chinese state. It shows how American positions on Chinese representation at the UN and on the trade embargo were subtly eroded, not least by changes in US domestic public opinion. The author argues that previous explantions of American relations with China have dwelt too single-mindedly on ideas associated with the strategic triangle and that instead we need to embed our understanding of the evolution of American relations with China within a wider structure of relationships at the global and domestic level. Reviews: `A valuable interpretative analysis of US-People's Republic of China relationships...she substantially contributes to post-Soviet era theoretical understanding. Strongly recommended for courses in foreign policy, diplomatic history, and international relations.' Choice `contains much that is valuable to those whose interests are primarily on the other side of the Pacific...The chapter on American public opinion and Chinese policy is also something which is not readily found in existing accounts of China'a post-1949 foreign relations' Times Higher Education Supplement `her analysis remains cautious and astute' The Economist

Book The Overseas Chinese in New Zealand

Download or read book The Overseas Chinese in New Zealand written by Stuart William Greif and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There are approximately 12,000 full blooded Chinese living in New Zealand. Most are descendants of Cantonese who came out to Otago province during and after the gold rush of the 1860s. These were not ordinary colonists or settlers but sojourners who intended to return one day to a life of luxury in Kwangtung province, China, with the help of the gold and wealth found in New Zealand. This dream finally came to an end in 1949, when Kwangtung could no longer be a secure haven because of the Communist victory on the Mainland. Thus the Chinese in New Zealand have had to come to grips with the reality of living in the Lower Antipodes. Through this study the author sheds light on the fascinating history of the Chinese of New Zealand -- now more properly the Chinese New Zealanders. The author establishes their degree of assimilation and, at the same time, their degree of retention of Cantonese culture and tradition. He establishes how they feel and look upon themselves culturally, politically, socially, etc. He measures their politization, political attitudes, social background and problems. He determines the possibility of retaining "purely" Chinese attitudes, values, political concepts, etc." -- Inside front cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only book that comprehensively covers the fortunes of Chinese immigrants in New Zealand from the earliest encounters in the mid-1800s, to the present day (including transnationalism) offering valuable data and expert viewpoints for international study and comparision. A timely book that will strike chords with the Chinese communiities in Australia, Canada and the United states, because of the strikingly similar expieriences of members of those communities at the hands of colonial governments and sometimes xenophobic societies.
