Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The fighting has been and is very stern and hard here, but New Zealand's lads and men have proven themselves the equal of the best soldiers of the world.' - Colonel William Malone, commander of the Wellington Battalion, Quinn's Post, Gallipoli, 15 July 1915 The first of its kind for New Zealand - a lavish, landmark production - New Zealand and the First World War dynamically illustrates 50 key episodes of our wartime life. Featuring over 500 images, many previously unpublished, the book comes with a host of memorabilia: fold-out maps posters booklets letters postcards The complete story of New Zealand's war is brought to life in dramatic detail - our front-line experiences overseas as well as those on the home front, from the outbreak in 1914 to demobilisation in 1919. This terrible conflict was not restricted to faraway battlefields like Gallipoli and Passchendaele - it had an unparalleled impact on New Zealand society, touching nearly every family, every street and every community. Until now, no single history has explored New Zealand's role in the First World War with such breadth and colour. A defining history for a new generation. 'This is the trailblazing history for the war's centenary. It is a brilliant achievement and one every family should have in its home . . . It answers the obvious and not so obvious questions and will delight every age. It is a triumph.' --Christopher Pugsley, New Zealand Listener

Book The New Zealand Wars 1820 72

Download or read book The New Zealand Wars 1820 72 written by Ian Knight and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-03-20 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1845 and 1872, various groups of Maori were involved in a series of wars of resistance against British settlers. The Maori had a fierce and long-established warrior tradition and subduing them took a lengthy British Army commitment, only surpassed in the Victorian period by that on the North-West Frontier of India. Warfare had been endemic in pre-colonial New Zealand and Maori groups maintained fortified villages or pas. The small early British coastal settlements were tolerated, and in the 1820s a chief named Hongi Hika travelled to Britain with a missionary and returned laden with gifts. He promptly exchanged these for muskets, and began an aggressive 15-year expansion. By the 1860s many Maori had acquired firearms and had perfected their bush-warfare tactics. In the last phase of the wars a religious movement, Pai Maarire ('Hau Hau'), inspired remarkable guerrilla leaders such as Te Kooti Arikirangi to renewed resistance. This final phase saw a reduction in British Army forces. European victory was not total, but led to a negotiated peace that preserved some of the Maori people's territories and freedoms.

Book Operation Goodtime and the Battle of the Treasury Islands 1943

Download or read book Operation Goodtime and the Battle of the Treasury Islands 1943 written by Reg Newell and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2012-09-26 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A force of New Zealanders and Americans invaded the Treasury Islands in the South Pacific on October 27, 1943, retaking them from their Japanese occupiers. Codenamed Operation Goodtime, the action marked the first time New Zealand forces took part in an opposed landing since Gallipoli in 1915. In an unusual allocation of troops in the American-dominated theater, New Zealand provided the fighting men and America the air, naval, and logistical support. Confronting extreme risks against a determined Japanese foe, the Allies nevertheless succeeded with relatively few casualties. Because of the need for operational security, Operation Goodtime received little publicity and has been relegated to a footnote in the history of the war in the Pacific. This is the first complete account of the Allied seizure of the Treasury Islands.

Book The Royal Navy and the Falklands War

Download or read book The Royal Navy and the Falklands War written by David Brown and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 1987-07-13 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This military history reveals the untold story of the United Kingdom’s Royal and Merchant Navies during the Falkland’s War. Soldiers and journalists alike wasted no time in memorializing the campaign to recapture the Falkland Islands after the Argentinian invasion in April, 1982. With the overwhelming focus on the role of the Army, the vital contributions of the Royal and Merchant Navies have been largely overlooked. Yet no British military forces would have been there at all had the Royal Navy not provided the necessary transport, not to mention air cover and bombardment support. In this book, naval historian David Brown tells the extraordinary story of how the fleet was assembled. Merchant-ships ranging from luxury liners such as the SS Canberra to cargo-carriers of every description were quickly converted to their new role as STUFTs, or Ships Taken Up From Trade. Brown describes the stupendous problems presented by the assembling and stowing of the thousands of tons of stores and equipment needed by the Expeditionary Forces and the way in which these problems were solved.
