Book Manual of New Zealand Geography

Download or read book Manual of New Zealand Geography written by Thomas A. Bowden and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of New Zealand Geography: With Maps and Examination Questions For information, the completion of it would have been well nigh impossible. To enumerate the friends to whom the Author 'has become indebted whilst preparing the sheets for publication would savour of vanity rather than Of gratitude 3 but it is due to the public to refer to the valuable aid afforded to the Author by Dr hector, which has mainly encouraged him to prosecute and complete the undertaking, and who, though not responsible for the accuracy of the work, has done very much to insure it. A tribute of acknowledgment is also due to the well-known and spirited Publish ers, who have enabled the Author to present the volume in so convenient and perfect a form, and who have also undertaken to produce, as a valuable companion to the Manual, a well-developed large-scale Map of the Colony, corresponding with their excellent and popular series of School-room wall-maps, at a price to the public which can scarcely be remunerative to themselves. The plan of the Manual can be explained in few words. It consists Of Two Parts. Part containing the elements, should be committed to memory so far as to secure correct and intelligent answers to the elaborate sets of Examination Questions which are appended to each section. If these are carefully used, the subject will be thoroughly mastered. Part II. Contains a descriptive account of each province and distinct division of the Colony, with a general synopsis Of its geographical details prefixed to each section. These schedules should be well digested by the student, and the sketch maps copied. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book New Zealand Its Physical Geography Geology and Natural History

Download or read book New Zealand Its Physical Geography Geology and Natural History written by Ferdinand von Hochstetter and published by . This book was released on 1867 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Inhabited by Polynesians since the thirteenth century and discovered by Europeans in the seventeenth, New Zealand is a geologically diverse island group where active volcanoes and frequent earthquakes have resulted in a rich variety of rock formations and geothermal activity. In 1859-60, the geologist Ferdinand von Hochstetter (1829-84) was employed by Auckland's government to undertake the first systematic geological survey of the islands, the results of which were first published in German in 1863 and translated into this English version in 1867. Hochstetter describes his travels across New Zealand, his encounters with native people and his scientific observations. He analyses plants, wildlife and fossils, describes mountains, rocks and boiling springs, and evaluates evidence of glaciers and tectonic activity. As a result of Hochstetter's work, several species in New Zealand were named after him. This book remains a valuable resource in the history of Australasian natural science'-- Publisher.

Book The Field Guide to New Zealand Geology

Download or read book The Field Guide to New Zealand Geology written by Jocelyn Thornton and published by Penguin Books. This book was released on 2009 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first field guide written for the general public and beginners in geology in New Zealand. Now fully revised and updated, it shows travellers in New Zealand something of the tremendous variety of our rocks, minerals and fossils and describes what to look for in many areas where rock formations are prominent. It covers the history of New Zealand from its beginnings on the sea floor some 600 million years ago to its present patchwork landscape of volcano, range and plain. This land was formed from many different layers of rock - volcanic flows, forest debris, ocean mud. All these have special characteristics, which are explained and illustrated to enable readers to find the layers and understand their origins and what they can tell us about the landscapes of the past. The crystals that grew in the rocks and the remains of living creatures that were preserved are also illustrated and described. Written in simplified terms, it includes an introductory chapter on general geology, A geological time chart and quick reference maps of the North Island and the South Island for travellers.

Book Geography in Focus Teaching and Learning in Issues Based Classsrooms

Download or read book Geography in Focus Teaching and Learning in Issues Based Classsrooms written by Mike Taylor and published by Nzcer Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive and stimulating discussion of issues-based geography education in Aotearoa New Zealand. It is an essential read for geography teachers and educators from the wider social sciences. Geography as a subject gets little attention in curriculum and assessment literature. Seeking to address that gap, the authors - teachers and academic practitioners - have thought deeply about the complexities and limitations of issues-based approaches. This book is not intended to offer strategies for teaching but the voices of teachers and the challenges of classroom practice come through strongly. Chapters include an exploration of social inquiry methodology here and internationally; the importance of subject-specific literacy in geography classrooms and the role of NGOs in development education. The case is made for subject knowledge to ensure the big ideas of geography are not lost and there is a critique of futures education discourse. Above all, the writers urge teachers to focus on the core business of teaching and learning and to lift the conversation beyond the constraints of NCEA.

Book A New Zealand Book of Beasts

Download or read book A New Zealand Book of Beasts written by Annie Potts and published by Auckland University Press. This book was released on 2014-03-01 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Touching on indigenous Maori relationships with the now-extinct, flightless moa; the attitudes of Pakeha, or European, settlers toward sheep; the iconography of whales and dolphins; the problems of pest-control; and the pleasures of pet-keeping, this modern-day bestiary is a fascinating study of human&–animal relations. In the book's four parts, the authors unravel the contradictory ways New Zealanders nurture and eradicate, glorify and demonize, cherish and devour, and describe and imagine animals. The study brings together insights from New Zealand's arts and literature, popular culture, historiography, media, and everyday life to describe and analyze their interactions with nga kararehe and nga manu, the beasts and birds of the land. In doing so, it illuminates fundamental aspects of New Zealand society: how New Zealanders understand their own identities and those of others; how they regard, inhabit, and make use of the natural world; and how they think about what they buy, eat, wear, watch, and read. Rich, multifaceted, and engaging, A New Zealand Book of Beasts satisfyingly explores how culture both shapes and is shaped by the &“beasts&” of Aotearoa.
