On the contrary, while Canadian and South African leaders saw membership in the league as a rite of passage towards greater autonomy, New Zealand's leader viewed it as an unwelcome burden and a potential threat to the British Empire. This history of New Zealand's relations with the League of Nations from its inception in 1920 to its demise in 1946 follows the government's transformation in attitude from its initial hostility to detached acceptance and, finally, passionate support in the late 1930s. By chronicling this complex movement, the book traces New Zealand's first tiny, halting steps towards developing its own foreign policy.

Pettit holds that the lessons learned when thinking about problems in one area of philosophy often constitute ready-made solutions to problems we faced in completely different areas. Common Minds presents specially written papers by some of the most eminent philosophers alive today, grappling with some of the themes derived from the larger programme that Pettit has inspired. How are we to do the best we can, whether in the domain of morality or politics, given that we are non-ideal agents acting in non-ideal circumstances? What is the normative significance of the capacity we have to engage in rational deliberation, both individually and collectively, about what to do? Its record does honour to the land from which it came and to the Empire for which it fought.” A German assessment of the division was seen in an Intelligence document captured at Hebuterne in July 1918:- “A particularly good assault Division. Its characteristics are a very strongly developed individual self-confidence or enterprise, characteristic of the colonial British, and a specially pronounced hatred of the Germans.”... The NZ Division of this history was formed in Egypt in March 1916...The infantry consisted of two battalions each of the Auckland, Canterbury, Otago and Wellington Regiments and four battalions of the NZ Rifle Brigade, all the divisional troops-artillery, engineers, medical etc .were NZ units. The GOC was Major-General Sir A.H. Russell, promoted from command of a brigade of the composite NZ and Australian Division; he was to be the only commander of the division. The 20th century saw the rise of several great maritime and military powers and the relative decline of British strength, which created major defence problems for the British Empire. Various solutions were attempted, such as ententes with France and Russia, the settling of differences with the USA and an alliance with Japan. These sufficed until after World War I, when the Empire gained several new territorial responsibilities, all to be defended on a declining economic base. The dominions were encouraged to pay for their own navies, although the Admiralty wished to assume control of them. The increasing threat from Japan made Australia, New Zealand and other Asian colonies nervous and the promised ’main fleet to Singapore’ became less and less likely as the 1930s wore on.

Book excerpt: The Sextant Conference (also known as the Cairo Conference) was held in Cairo, Egypt, from November 22 to 26, 1943. The three main participants were President Franklin D. Roosevelt, British prime minister Winston S. Churchill, and Chinese leader Chiang Kai-shek. The primary topic under consideration for the Allies was planning for the defeat of Japan. The Eureka Conference (also called the Tehran Conference) met from November 28 to December 1, 1943, in Tehran, Iran. This conference marked the first time that the Big Three—Roosevelt, Churchill, and Soviet premier Joseph Stalin—had assembled. The main focus of their discussions was the Allied invasion of northern France (Operation Overlord) to open a second front in Europe in the late spring or early summer of 1944. The Second Cairo Conference, also held in Egypt, lasted from December 2 to 7. In addition the CCS, Churchill and Roosevelt were joined by Turkish president Ismet Inönü for several of the sessions. Operation Overlord again dominated the discussions. For the Pacific campaign, operations in Southeast Asia were a key topic at this conference. The Sextant, Eureka, and Second Cairo Conferences were three in a series of high-level conferences held by the US and British leaders in Washington, DC; Casablanca; Quebec; Cairo; Tehran; Malta; Yalta; and Potsdam to formulate the Allied grand strategy. Codenamed Operation Goodtime, the action marked the first time New Zealand forces took part in an opposed landing since Gallipoli in 1915. In an unusual allocation of troops in the American-dominated theater, New Zealand provided the fighting men and America the air, naval, and logistical support. Confronting extreme risks against a determined Japanese foe, the Allies nevertheless succeeded with relatively few casualties. Because of the need for operational security, Operation Goodtime received little publicity and has been relegated to a footnote in the history of the war in the Pacific. This is the first complete account of the Allied seizure of the Treasury Islands.
