Book excerpt: This collection of photographs of the water towers of New York City are not only a tribute to these iconic structures of the city’s landscape, but also a pretext to explore hidden details of its architecture. Rooftop water towers are an unique opportunity to experiment with shapes, forms and textures, a frequent component of my photographic quest. Inspired by famous paintings like Edward Hopper’s “Rooftop” (1926), and by the ever changing architectural scene, I focused my attention on the cylindrical wooded structures and framed them with the surrounding buildings. This a is a collection of many years of walking the streets of New York with my camera.Water is our most precious natural resource. New York City’s skyline is dotted with wooden water towers, the result of a 19th century’s law requiring all buildings taller than six stories to be equipped with a rooftop water tank. This was necessary to prevent the need for excessively high pressures at lower elevations, which could burst pipes. Pressure in the city’s pipes can take water up only about half a dozen stories, so a higher building needs either a pumping system or a system of tanks. A water tower seemed like the better solution, since it also provides emergency storage for fire protection. A water tower store 25,000 to 50,000 liters of water until it is needed in the building below. The upper portion of water is skimmed off the top for everyday use while the water in the bottom of the tower is held in reserve to fight fire. When the water drops below a certain level, a pressure switch, level switch or float valve activate a pump or open a public water line to refill the water tower. Even today, no sealant is used to hold the water in. The wooden walls are held together with cables but leak through the gaps when first filled. As the water saturates, the wood swells, the gaps close and the tank become impermeable.

Book Inhabitable Infrastructures

Download or read book Inhabitable Infrastructures written by CJ Lim and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-25 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inhabitable Infrastructures: Science fiction or urban future?, the follow up to Food City and Smartcities and Eco-Warriors, from one of the world’s leading urban design and architectural thinkers, explores the potential of climate change-related multi-use infrastructures that address the fundamental human requirements to protect, to provide and to participate. The stimulus for the infrastructures derives from postulated scenarios and processes gleaned from science fiction and futurology as well as the current body of scientific knowledge regarding changing environmental impacts on cities. Science fiction is interdisciplinary by nature, aggregates the past and present, and evaluates both lay opinions and professional strategies in an attempt to develop foresight and to map possible futures. The research culminates in the creation of innovative multi-use infrastructures and integrated self-sustaining support systems that meet the challenges posed through climate change and overpopulation, and the reciprocal benefits of simultaneously addressing the threat and the shaping of cities. J. G. Ballard has written that the psychological realm of science fiction is most valuable in its predictive function, and in projecting emotions into the future. The knowledge from the book is widely transferable, constituting both solutions and speculative visions of future urban environments. The book is indispensable reading for professionals and students in the fields of urban design, architecture, engineering and environmental socio-politics.

Where your garbage goes? What the pipes under city streets do? How bananas from Ecuador get to your local market? Why radiators in apartment buildings clang? Using New York City as its point of reference, The Works takes readers down manholes and behind the scenes to explain exactly how an urban infrastructure operates. Deftly weaving text and graphics, author Kate Ascher explores the systems that manage water, traffic, sewage and garbage, subways, electricity, mail, and much more. Full of fascinating facts and anecdotes, The Works gives readers a unique glimpse at what lies behind and beneath urban life in the twenty-first century.

Book Principles of Water Resources

Download or read book Principles of Water Resources written by Thomas V. Cech and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-04-03 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proper management of water resources can take many forms, and requires the knowledge and expertise to work at the intersection of mathematics, geology, biology, geography, meteorology, political science, and even psychology. This book provides an essential foundation in water management and development concepts and practices, dissecting complex topics into short, understandable explanations that spark true interest in the field. Approaching the study of water resources systematically, the discussion begins with historical perspective before moving on to physical processes, engineering, water chemistry, government regulation, environmental issues, global conflict, and more. Now in its fourth edition, this text provides the most current introduction to a field that is becoming ever more critical as climate change begins to threaten water supplies around the world. As geography, climate, population growth, and technology collide, effective resource management must include a comprehensive understanding of how these forces intermingle and come to life in the water so critical to us all.
