Colby served with the 23rd New York, the 107th New York at Antietam, Chancellorsville and Harper's Ferry, and later in the Veteran Reserve Corps as superintendent of Old Capital Prison. This is a compilation of Colby's letters to family, friends and other military personnel, newspaper articles that detail the fighting in which Colby and his fellow soldiers were involved, and accounts of the fighting and daily life from other soldiers. Colby was not a well known name, but he crossed paths with many prominent figures of the Civil War, witnessed history being made, and was recognized as an excellent soldier by his peers and commanding officers.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Civil War Times: 1861 1865 In an address to the New England Society of New York, Oliver Wendell Holmes said: "The story of the Pilgrims may he told for a thousand anniversaries and the next year it will be fresh again." So it is with the story of the Civil War. Notwithstanding the passing years, it retains all its interest, especially for those who bore arms on either side. The surviving veterans never tire of telling the story or of hearing it told, and its fascination is such as to lend a charm to even the most unpretentious narrative of the conflict in which they took part. Macaulay said that he intended to write a history of England that would make the lady in her drawing-room lay down the latest novel and take up his book, and he accomplished his purpose. The time has not yet come, nor has the historian appeared, for writing a history of the Civil War. No man now living can write it with the impartiality that should characterize the historian, and no historian could now write such a history without rekindling the embers of passion and prejudice still smoldering beneath the ashes of the conflict that once glowed with such fierce heat. Book Him on the One Side and Me on the Other

Download or read book Him on the One Side and Me on the Other written by Alexander Campbell and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander and James Campbell, born and raised in Scotland, immigrated to the United States as teenagers in the 1850s and settled in vastly different regions of the country - Alexander in New York City and James in Charleston, South Carolina. When the American Civil War broke out in 1861, Alexander and James opted to fight for their adopted states and causes: Alexander enlisted in the 79th New York "Highlanders" and James in the 1st South Carolina ("Charleston") Battalion. "Him on the One Side and Me on the Other" tells the remarkable story of these two brothers divided by the Civil War. Through their wartime letters to family and to each other, the brothers expose the deep fractures in American society caused by the most destructive war in this country's history. In the most dramatic moment in this story of the brothers' wartime experiences, the letters reveal a near-reunion on the battlefield of Secessionville, South Carolina, on June 16, 1862. There Alexander was part of the Union force that assaulted Tower Battery, a fort inhabited by James and his Confederate comrades.
