Book The Metropolitan Airport

Download or read book The Metropolitan Airport written by Nicholas Dagen Bloom and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2015-08-18 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John F. Kennedy International Airport is one of New York City's most successful and influential redevelopment projects. Built and defined by outsize personalities—Mayor Fiorello La Guardia, famed urban planner Robert Moses, and Port Authority Executive Director Austin Tobin among them—JFK was fantastically expensive and unprecedented in its scale. By the late 1940s, once-polluted marshlands had become home to one of the world's busiest and most advanced airfields. Almost from the start, however, environmental activists in surrounding neighborhoods and suburbs clashed with the Port Authority. These fierce battles in the long term restricted growth and, compounded by lackluster management and planning, diminished JFK's status and reputation. Yet the airport remained a key contributor to metropolitan vitality: New Yorkers bound for adventure and business still boarded planes headed to distant corners of the globe, billions of tourists and immigrants came and went, and mammoth air cargo facilities bolstered the region's commerce. In The Metropolitan Airport, Nicholas Dagen Bloom chronicles the untold story of JFK International's complicated and turbulent relationship with the New York City metropolitan region. In spite of its reputation for snarled traffic, epic delays, endless construction, and abrasive employees, the airport was a key player in shifting patterns of labor, transportation, and residence; the airport both encouraged and benefited from the dispersion of population and economic activity to the outer boroughs and suburbs. As Bloom shows, airports like JFK are vibrant parts of their cities and powerfully influence urban development. The Metropolitan Airport is an indispensable book for those who wish to understand the revolutionary impact of airports on the modern American city.

Book excerpt: When Eero Saarinen s TWA Flight Center opened at New York s Idlewild (later John F. Kennedy International) airport in 1962 it was a sensation. It represented a significant change in architectural thinking. Trans World Airlines (TWA) initial commission to Saarinen was for a building suiting the airline s operational requirements to serve a fast growing number of passengers as efficiently as possible. At the same time, Saarinen s emblematic bird-like design allowed TWA to polish its image among air travelers, clearly distinguishing the company from other airlines in the intense competition during the early days if the jet-age in aviation. TWA clearly succeeded in capturing public attention for their architectural jewel, as Saarinen s iconic design got great publicity throughout its operational life until it closed in 2001 following TWA s takeover by American Airlines. Such use of a signature building has become very common in marketing for corporations, cultural institutions, and also for entire cities, e.g. Bilbao with Frank O. Gehry s Guggenheim museum. Although the TWA Flight Center was regarded an icon of the jet-age, it never really suited operational requirements. When Boeing introduced the B747 Jumbo Jet in 1970, the building already proved outdated and inefficient for the number of passengers using it. The new book "Designing TWA" for the first time tells the entire story of Saarinen s TWA Flight Center. The author Kornel Ringli, architect and publicist, has carried-out extensive research and brought together vast documentary material. He documents the terminal s architecture in the evident area of conflict between flight operations, design, and public relations. He also investigates how it remained an icon of jet-propelled aviation while never properly serving its purpose for just that industry. The book features a wealth of high-quality images showing TWA Flight Center in all its glamour and beauty, alongside many documents and plans. The concise text offers much detail and reaches far beyond many articles and previous smaller publications on one of the world s best-known pieces of architecture."

Book Westchester County Airport

Download or read book Westchester County Airport written by Kent Patterson and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2017-02-06 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Westchester County Airport is referred to by the International Air Transport Association as HPN or, more endearingly by its patrons, White Plains Airport. The airport is unique in that it has the feel of a rural or regional airport but is within the New York metro area. Today, the airport bustles with traffic, accommodating commercial airlines, business, and private aviation. The golden age of aviation gave way to a major industry with the employment of modern airports featuring lighted concrete runways and new technologies like radio. In Westchester County, this all began with a seaplane operation at Rye-Cove in the early 1920s, followed by the call for a county airport in 1928, but it did not come to fruition until 1945. World War II generated a need for an airfield at Rye Lake, and by 1945, diminished defense needs permitted the transition from military airfield to county airport.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long Island is a natural airfield. The central area of Long Islands Nassau Countyknown as the Hempstead Plainsis the only natural prairie east of the Allegheny Mountains. The island itself is ideally placed at the eastern edge of the United States, adjacent to its most populous city. In fact, nowhere else in America has so much aviation activity been confined to such a relatively small geographic area. The many record-setting and historic flights and the aviation companies that were developed here have helped place Long Island on the aviation map. Through one hundred years of aviation history, Long Island has been home to eighty airfields. From military airfields to seaplane bases and commercial airports, the island has had more airports than any other place of similar geographic proportion in America. Most have vanished without a trace, but a handful remains. Long Island Airports is the first book to document the pictorial history of these airports and airfields.

Book LaGuardia Airport

  • Pages : 132 pages

Download or read book LaGuardia Airport written by Joshua Stoff and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2008-10-27 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LaGuardia Airport, named for the mayor of New York in the mid 1930s is one of America's busiest airports and has undergone great change throughout the years. Constructed closer to Manhattan than the commercially unsuccessful Floyd Bennett Field, LaGuardia Airport was conceived in the mid-1930s as New York City mayor Fiorello LaGuardia realized the need for a great airport for one of the world's great cities. Originally known as New York Municipal Airport, the popular airport soon had its name changed to recognize LaGuardia's enormous contribution to the project. At the time of its opening in 1939, it was the largest and most advanced commercial airport in the world with terminals considered art deco masterpieces. Although a very large airport for the era in which it was built, by the late 1940s it was the world's busiest airport and clearly too small for the increasing amount of air traffic. Through the years its runways were lengthened and facilities were improved to handle larger and faster aircraft. Still one of America's busiest airports, LaGuardia has witnessed the steady progress of American commercial aviation, from flying boats to jetliners.
