Book The New York Cries in Rhyme Classic Reprint

Download or read book The New York Cries in Rhyme Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-04 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New-York Cries in Rhyme New-york is built on the south end of the Island of Manhattan, now called new-york Island. The noble River Hudson, or North River, flows along its north west side, while the East River, which unites with the majestic Long Island Sound, waters the south-east border. It is thought that no place in the world, embraces so many natural advantages for commerce and trade, as the port of new-york. None, perhaps, is in a more flourishing condition, than it is at this time. A great many buildings have been recently erected, and we may behold whole squares and magnificent structures going up in various parts of the city. Vessels from almost every commercial country, may be seen in its port; and the steamboats, m the summer are numerous, and ply in every direction. By great labor and expense, the numerous hills in that part of the Island on which the city is building, have been leveled, and valleys and swamps have been filled up. Only a few years ago, there was a lake of fresh water, called the Collect, in the middle of the city, which is now firm land; and spacious streets and stately buildings, now occupy a place where the boys of new-york formerly spent many hours in skating! Book What to See in New York Classic Reprint

Download or read book What to See in New York Classic Reprint written by John Wanamaker and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What to See in New York Manhattan Island was purchased from the Indians by the Dutch in 1609. Merchandise to the value of twenty-six dollars was said to be the consideration in this first recorded transfer of New York real estate. On the southernmost tip of the island a few years later was founded New Amsterdam, shut off from the wilderness by a wall extending along its northern boundary on the line of the present-day Wall Street. New Amsterdam flourished under a line of old Dutch governors, the most famous of whom was old Peter Stuyvesant, until 1664, when the town was seized by the English. Its name was changed to New York, in honor of the Duke of York, to whom title to the land had been granted by his brother, King Charles II of England. Except for one year, when the Dutch regained possession of Manhattan Island, the English held sway over New York until the close of the Revolutionary War. New York was a storm center about which there were many campaigns during the Revolution. In the old days, New York City was composed of Manhattan Island together with two or three small islands in the adjacent waters. In 1898, Greater New York was incorporated. This greater city is composed of five boroughs Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Richmond. By glancing at the map in the back of this booklet one may get a clear idea of the comparative size and arrangement of the several boroughs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An American in New York: A Novel of to-Day Along with the education of the past he had a shrewd eye for the present, and he called himself an American in New York. In the great Waldorf Hotel, where the lamps burn at midday as at midnight, he was unconsciously conspicuous as slowly he strode down the corridor known as Millionaire Lane, where, in the evening, were gathered the wealthier members of the Stock Exchange, speculation polite in full dress, with many a bow and sallow smile, but just as heartless and as replete with human greed as when on the "floor" in Wall Street, beneath the cold eye of the gray-bearded old chairman sitting high in his marble balcony. Book The Practical Guide to New York City and Brooklyn Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Practical Guide to New York City and Brooklyn Classic Reprint written by Henry Morford and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practical Guide to New York City and Brooklyn The principal cause for the publication of this little "Guide," is also the cause for the peculiar name which it bears - "The Practical." A considerable number of Hand-Books to the City of New York exist; but for one cause or another they are generally impractical, consequently of limited use, or none. One is a handsome picture-book, useful for a library, but too large for the pocket; another is cumbrous and inconvenient; a third is a mere advertising medium, with everything else subordinated to the interests of dealers, &c., &c., &c. Familiar with the publication of general Guide Books to the Old and New Worlds, which have the reputation of being exceptionally convenient and useful, while low-priced and unpretentious the Editor has believed that he could tell the story of the City of New York, intelligently, briefly, and to the purpose, making a little book very cheap and very useful; and, abandoning the whole stereotype system, it is his intention to republish it every year, with material alterations as they may be demanded. The information as to Streets, Churches, Plates of Amusement, Railways, Hotels, &c., will be found clear and intelligible, while brief and concise; and the feature has been added, of condensed directions for making those Longer Excursions away from the City, which many travellers will desire, as well as the Shorter ones necessary for every visitor.
