Book THE NEW YEAR S BARGAIN A Children s Fantasy Story Illustrated

Download or read book THE NEW YEAR S BARGAIN A Children s Fantasy Story Illustrated written by Susan Coolidge and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2020-06-02 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The “New Year’s Bargain” by Susan Coolidge is a lovely children's story with charming illustrations throughout by Addie Ledyard, first published in 1871 and again in 1884. The story takes place in the Black Forest in Germany where two little children, Max and Thekla, come across Time creating the months of the year out of small moments. Max is unable to resist taking some moments for himself, and when the months come to demand their time back, he bargains with them to tell he and Thekla a story each month and to bring them a present. The stories have a mythical aura while still maintaining a Victorian sensibility about women's roles and dead children. Even so, it is still a fascinating read. To be read to children by adults and scholars of children's literature should definitely take a look. The 13 chapters of this book are: I. The Bargain with the Months. II. The Bear Story. III. Little Tot. IV. “Maria”. V. May’s Garden. VI. The Little Housekeepers. VII. The Last of the Fairies. VIII. The Story of a Little Spark. IX. The Desert Island. X. Nippie Nutcracker. XI. “Chusey”. XII. How the Cat kept Christmas. Book excerpt: IT seemed a long month to Max and Thekla, but at last it was over. The 31st of January came. Grandfather was tucked up early in bed, the fire was poked, the tin can brought out, and all made ready. The children sat in expectation. At last there came a rap at the door."Walk in," cried Max; and February entered. He was a short, thick-set fellow, with red eyes, a red nose, and a gruff, surly voice. Very unhappy he looked just now; and when Max pulled up a chair for him, he sat down on the edge, and began, -"Unaccustomed as I am to public speaking,"-"Hallo!" cried Max, interrupting him. "That'll never do in the world. That's a horrid beginning: you must try again.""The brothers and sister believed every word of it; but Mamma put her tongue in her cheek, and gently pointed over her left shoulder with her paw.""Oh, must I?" said February, much relieved. "I thought I had to take pains with my language. People who 'address the young' usually do. Well, if I may go ahead in my own way it's all right: you've taken a weight off my mind.""I'm glad to hear it," said Max; "but before you begin, where's the gift?

Book Bargain Fever

Download or read book Bargain Fever written by Mark Ellwood and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost half of everything sold in America is listed at some kind of promotional price. People don't only want a deep discount, they expect it - and won't settle for anything less. In this playful, deeply researched book, journalist Mark Ellwood takes a trip into this new landscape. From the floor of upscale department store Sergdorf Goodman to the bustling aisles of a Turkish bazaar, from the outlet Disneyworld of rural Pennsylvania to a town in Florida that can claim to be couponing's spiritual capital, Ellwood shows how some people are, quite literally, born to be bargain junkies thanks to a quirk of their DNA. He also uncovers the dark side of discounting: the sales-driven sleights of hand that sellers employ to hoodwink unsuspecting buyers. Bargain Feveris a manual for thriving in this new era, when deal hunting has gone from being a sign of indigence to one of intelligence. There's never been a better time to be a buyer - at least if you know how the game works. 'This book is a bargain hunter's bible.' Michael Tonello, author of Bringing Home the Birkin'Bargain Fever is just as fierce, funny, tenacious, and tantalizing as its author. I love this book.' Kelly Cutrone, founder, People's Revolution, and author of Normal Gets You Nowhere'A book after my own heart. Bargain Fever lifts the veils off the sales, ensuring even more that you'll never pay retail again.' Carmen Wong Ulrich, financial contributor, CBS This Morning, and author of Generation Debt'Highly informative and entertaining.' Booklist

Download or read book Capital Moves written by Jefferson Cowie and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-24 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Find a pool of cheap, pliable workers and give them jobs—and soon they cease to be as cheap or as pliable. What is an employer to do then? Why, find another poor community desperate for work. This route—one taken time and again by major American manufacturers—is vividly chronicled in this fascinating account of RCA's half century-long search for desirable sources of labor. Capital Moves introduces us to the people most affected by the migration of industry and, most importantly, recounts how they came to fight against the idea that they were simply "cheap labor." Jefferson Cowie tells the dramatic story of four communities, each irrevocably transformed by the opening of an industrial plant. From the manufacturer's first factory in Camden, New Jersey, where it employed large numbers of southern and eastern European immigrants, RCA moved to rural Indiana in 1940, hiring Americans of Scotch-Irish descent for its plant in Bloomington. Then, in the volatile 1960s, the company relocated to Memphis where African Americans made up the core of the labor pool. Finally, the company landed in northern Mexico in the 1970s—a region rapidly becoming one of the most industrialized on the continent.
