Book The Knapps Lived Here

Download or read book The Knapps Lived Here written by Ken Spooner and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2010-07 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a Sunday afternoon in 1959, in a small town on Long Island, 11 year old Ken Spooner watched along with most everyone as his personal playhouse, the Knapp Mansion, burned to the ground. Over 40 years passed before he would write a short story memoir of that day, triggering a very long journey through the first decade of the 21st century, to discover just who the Knapps were (no one seemed to know) and to find out who the arsonist was (that was the easy part). Through a folksy interwoven narrative, the reader discovers, as he did in realtime, the unwritten history of one of the Highest-Society, Lowest-Profile families America's gilded age has ever produced. Travel inside the many Knapp mansions, where 5 US Presidents and many icons of the 19th & 20th centuries were guests. This is Spooner's third book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It may be surprising to us now, but the taxidermists who filled the museums, zoos, and aquaria of the twentieth century were also among the first to become aware of the devastating effects of careless human interaction with the natural world. Witnessing firsthand the decimation caused by hide hunters, commercial feather collectors, whalers, big game hunters, and poachers, these museum taxidermists recognized the existential threat to critically endangered species and the urgent need to protect them. The compelling exhibits they created—as well as the scientific field work, popular writing, and lobbying they undertook—established a vital leadership role in the early conservation movement for American museums that persists to this day. Through their individual research expeditions and collective efforts to arouse demand for environmental protections, this remarkable cohort—including William T. Hornaday, Carl E. Akeley, and several lesser-known colleagues—created our popular understanding of the animal world and its fragile habitats. For generations of museum visitors, they turned the glass of an exhibition case into a window on nature—and a mirror in which to reflect on our responsibility for its conservation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Word Across the Water, Tom Smith brings the histories of Hawai'i and the Philippines together to argue that US imperial ambitions towards these Pacific archipelagos were deeply intertwined with the work of American Protestant missionaries. As self-styled interpreters of history, missionaries produced narratives to stoke interest in their cause, locating US imperial interventions and their own evangelistic projects within divinely ordained historical trajectories. As missionaries worked in the shadow of their nation's empire, however, their religiously inflected historical narratives came to serve an alternative purpose. They emerged as a way for missionaries to negotiate their own status between the imperial and the local and to come to terms with the diverse spaces, peoples, and traditions of historical narration that they encountered across different island groups. Word Across the Water encourages scholars of empire and religion alike to acknowledge both the pernicious nature of imperial claims over oceanic space underpinned by religious and historical arguments, and the fragility of those claims on the ground.
