Book excerpt: Democratic elections are designed to create unequal outcomes: for some to win, others have to lose. This book examines the consequences of this inequality for the legitimacy of democratic political institutions and systems. Using survey data collected in democracies around the globe, the authors argue that losing generates ambivalent attitudes towards political authorities. Because the efficacy and ultimately the survival of democratic regimes can be seriously threatened if the losers do not consent to their loss, the central themes of this book focus on losing: how losers respond to their loss and how institutions shape losing. While there tends to be a gap in support for the political system between winners and losers, it is not ubiquitous. The book paints a picture of losers' consent that portrays losers as political actors whose experience and whose incentives to accept defeat are shaped both by who they are as individuals as well as the political environment in which loss is given meaning. Given that the winner-loser gap in legitimacy is a persistent feature of democratic politics, the findings presented in this book contain crucial implications for our understanding of the functioning and stability of democracies. Comparative Politics is a series for students and teachers of political science that deals with contemporary government and politics. The General Editors are Professor Alfio Mastropaolo, University of Turin and Kenneth Newton, University of Southampton and Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin . Book The Payoff Principle

Download or read book The Payoff Principle written by Alan Zimmerman and published by Greenleaf Book Group. This book was released on 2015-03-03 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where do you hope to go with your life, your career, and your relationships? How will you muster the energy to keep on keeping on, in the good times and the bad? What skills do you have to learn—and then use—to make sure you get the payoffs you really want in your professional life and your personal life? The problem with so many positive-thinking books and self-help routines is that they don’t give you the whole formula. The Payoff Principle gives you that formula—Purpose + Passion + Process = Payoff—and then works as your guidebook, teaching you how to apply the formula to achieve success at work, at home, and everywhere you go. When you find purpose in what you do, exhibit passion for the outcome, and master the process to make it happen, you produce the payoffs you want, need, and deserve. Plenty of people have done exactly that, whether consciously and deliberately or accidently and luckily. But, you don’t have to depend on luck anymore. You have a formula for getting what you want. You have a practical set of strategies guaranteed to deliver greater happiness and success than you’ve ever experienced. All you have to do now is read The Payoff Principle to learn how to implement the formula to experience the new-and-complete you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Book Award–winning classic on the Vietnam War, reissued for the war’s fiftieth anniversary. Based on interviews with both Americans and Vietnamese, Winners and Losers is Gloria Emerson’s powerful portrait of the Vietnam War. From soldiers on the battlefield to protesters on the home front, Emerson chronicles the war’s impact on ordinary lives with characteristic insight and brilliance. Today, as we approach the fiftieth anniversary of the Gulf of Tonkin incident, much of the physical and emotional damage from that conflict—the empty political rhetoric, the mounting casualties, and the troubled homecomings of shell-shocked soldiers—is once again part of the American experience. Winners and Losers remains a potent reminder of the danger of blindly applied American power, and its poignant truths are the legacy of a remarkable journalist.

Book When Winners are Losers

Download or read book When Winners are Losers written by Catherine Buckle and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2008/9 Zimbabwe was on the verge of complete collapse: no food to buy in the shops, no money in the banks and a currency denominated in trillions, quadrillions and septillions. Hunger was widespread and cholera rampant. The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission took five weeks to announce that the 2008 elections were too close to call and ordered a second ballot. An orgy of violence against opposition supporters left hundreds killed, thousands fleeing the country and a quarter of a million people displaced from their homes. When winners are losers recounts the events of the five years that followed when the opposition formed a government of national unity with Zanu PF in order to stop the violence and suffering. A currency of worthless Zimbabwe dollars was replaced by US dollars and SA Rand and an economy on the brink began to recover. A brief window of hope had opened, but only until the next election.

Download or read book Born Losers written by Scott A. Sandage and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2006-04-30 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What makes somebody a Loser, a person doomed to unfulfilled dreams and humiliation? Nobody is born to lose, and yet failure embodies our worst fears. The Loser is our national bogeyman, and his history over the past two hundred years reveals the dark side of success, how economic striving reshaped the self and soul of America. From colonial days to the Columbine tragedy, Scott Sandage explores how failure evolved from a business loss into a personality deficit, from a career setback to a gauge of our self-worth. From hundreds of private diaries, family letters, business records, and even early credit reports, Sandage reconstructs the dramas of real-life Willy Lomans. He unearths their confessions and denials, foolish hopes and lost faith, sticking places and changing times. Dreamers, suckers, and nobodies come to life in the major scenes of American history, like the Civil War and the approach of big business, showing how the national quest for success remade the individual ordeal of failure. Born Losers is a pioneering work of American cultural history, which connects everyday attitudes and anxieties about failure to lofty ideals of individualism and salesmanship of self. Sandage's storytelling will resonate with all of us as it brings to life forgotten men and women who wrestled with The Loser--the label and the experience--in the days when American capitalism was building a nation of winners.

Book And the Loser is A History of Oscar Oversights 2nd Edition

Download or read book And the Loser is A History of Oscar Oversights 2nd Edition written by Aubrey Malone and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book of its kind. Aubrey Malone has gone back to the start of the Oscar ceremonies and discovered that mistakes have been made every year in the choice of what has been deemed “best” in the categories of acting, directing, producing and the subsidiary awards. He has identified all the great stars (Garbo, Montgomery Clift, Peter O’Toole, Barbara Stanwyck, etc.) who never held Oscars in their hands, and also iconic directors like Stanley Kubrick who were never thus honored. Why were some people over-rewarded by the Academy and why did others fall below the radar? The author outlines all of the extraneous factors leading to voting choices, and how Oscar pariahs have often been subsequently (or even posthumously) awarded for the wrong films to make up for omissions in a given year. With both wit and wisdom he has written an “alternative” history of the Oscars that will be required reading for both academics and film buffs alike. It tells the story behind the story. “If there were Oscars for research, Aubrey Malone would be right up there with the best of them.” (Film Ireland)

Book China s Revolutions and Intergenerational Relations

Download or read book China s Revolutions and Intergenerational Relations written by Martin K. Whyte and published by U OF M CENTER FOR CHINESE STUDIES. This book was released on 2021-01-19 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China’s Revolutions and Intergenerational Relations counters the widely accepted notion that traditional family patterns are weakened by forces such as economic development and social revolutions. China has experienced wrenching changes on both the economic and the political fronts, yet from the evidence presented here the tradition of filial respect and support for aging parents remains alive and well. Using collaborative surveys carried out in 1994 in the middle-sized industrial city of Baoding and comparative data from urban Taiwan, the authors examine issues shaping the relationships between adult Chinese children and their elderly parents. The continued vitality of intergenerational support and filial obligations in these samples is not simply an instance of strong Confucian tradition trumping powerful forces of change. Instead, and somewhat paradoxically, the continued strength of filial obligations can be attributed largely to the institutions of Chinese socialism forged in the era of Mao Zedong. With socialist institutions now under assault in the People’s Republic of China, the future of intergenerational relations in the twenty-first century is once again uncertain.
