Book The Christian Society Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Christian Society Classic Reprint written by George Davis Herron and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-21 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Society The church was not sent to be an institu tional dominion, but a sacrificial and redemp tive life in the world. Yet the church is not engaged in sacrifice and redemption, so much as in artificial organization; not engaged in discerning and teaching right from wrong, so much as in definition of doctrines. The anal ogy between Protestant Christendom in rela tion to its mission of social redemption, and the relation of the Jewish church to the first appearance of the Son of God, is true. I am haunted continually with the vision of the liv ing Jesus weeping over our majestic temples of worship, our halls of theology, our conven tions of religion, as though he were again in the sacred sorrow of that weeping over Jerusa lem, his heart again broken because' only the remnant may receive the mission which the institution rejects.but, whatever be the form in which they are destined to be shaped, the work which the Christian societies, as socie ties, have to do, in the days that are to come, is not inferior to any work which has lain before them at any epoch of their history. For the air is charged with thunder, and the times that are coming may be times of storm. There are phe nomena beneath the surface of society of which it would be hardly possible to overrate the significance. There is a widen ing separation of class from class: there is a growing social strain: there is a disturbance of the political equilibrium there is the rise of an educated proletariat. To the problems which these phenomena suggest Christianity has the key. Its unaccomplished mission is to reconstruct society on the basis of brotherhood. To you and me and men like ourselves is committed, in these anxious days, that which is at once an awful responsibility and a splendid destiny - to transform this modern world into a Christian society, to change the socialism which is based on the assumption of clashing interests into the socialism which is based on the sense of spiritual union, and to gather together the scattered forces of a divided Christendom into a confederation in which organization will be of less account than fellowship with one Spirit and faith in one Lord - into a communion wide as human life and deep as human need - into a Church which shall outshine even the golden glory of its dawn by the splendor of its eternal noon. Book Classic Texts in Mission and World Christianity

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classic Texts in Mission & World Christianity, a unique sourcebook on the history and mission of the church. Nearly two hundred selections covering the two millennia of the Christian era are represented, including both classic and contemporary voices of persons in mission - women and men, from Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Europe - and key texts for understanding the mission of Christ, the vocation of the church, and the nature of Christianity. Following the outline of David Bosch's monumental Transforming Mission, Classic Texts offers its readers the full texts cited throughout that best-seller, as well as dozens of additional primary sources from every era and every part of the world. From the seventh century abbess Bertilla of Chelles (who directed both women and men missionaries in England) to the Nestorian Monument detailing struggles with issues of contextualization in 8th century China, to David Livingstone's oft-cited espousal of civilization, commerce, and Christianity (seldom quoted in its entirety), Classic Texts provides a depth and breadth of resources unparalleled elsewhere.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nature and Purpose of a Christian Society Probably most prefaces are postscripts, and I may say at once that this one is no exception. Some who have seen this lecture in proof have suggested the question, Why should a Lecture given to the Yearly Meeting of the Society of Friends lean in this direction? It is all an appeal to the practice of the historic Church, writes one such reader, whereas the Quaker differentia is, for the most part, an appeal against the historic Church, 'the apostasy, ' in fact, to quote George Fox. I pass by the second clause here, and I admit the first, with a qualification; I appeal to the experience of the historic Church, and, if future readers of this lecture wish to know why, I will tell them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Race and the Renewal of the Church This rook IS one OF several TO appear during the next few years in a series entitled Christian Perspectives on Social Problems. This is an attempt to meet a challenge from an exceedingly robust minority of laymen for brief, readable analyses of cultural problems from a theological perspective. It is intended to help them think theologically about some of the exasperatingly difficult problems of society, both the issues relating to life in America and those linking this nation to the destiny of the world. Book The New Social Order Classic Reprint

Download or read book The New Social Order Classic Reprint written by John Fordyce and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Social Order The following pages have been written for, and they are addressed to, the People. For the learned and the curious, there are abundant opportunities of becoming acquainted with the triumphs of the Gospel in the early pagan world; even within the last few years, several treatises have appeared on this suggestive theme. But these books are gener ally large, and they discuss questions that are not of engrossing interest to the Many. The author has tried to avoid all details and discussions not likely to attract the general reader, and to present a brief and popular account of some of the changes wrought in personal character and in social life by the Spirit of Jesus Christ. With what degree of success he has accomplished his self-imposed task, it is for others rather than himself to determine. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Society of Friends: An Enquiry Into the Causes of Its Weakness as a Church The church universal of the Christian world is, in the present day, made up of many separate churches. Of these, the Society of Friends forms one - conspicuous, not for its numbers, but for the simplicity of its views, and the position its members have held in modern civilization. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Summary of Christian Doctrines as Held by the Religious Society of Friends This essay has been written in pursuance of a suggestion made by some members of Friends' Publication Association, that a brief statement of Friends' views would be useful, to be handed to those who inquire what we believe, and what are the grounds of our faith. The views herein presented in a concise form are substantially the same as those more fully explained in two of my previous works, entitled, Conversations on Religious Subjects, and The Life of George Fox, with Dissertations on his views concern ing the Doctrines, Testimonies and Discipline of the Christian Church. Several passages are in nearly the same language, and some further illustrations have been added, my aim being, not originality of expression, but Gos pel truth in simplicity and clearness. Download or read book The Formation of the New Testament Classic Reprint written by George Hooper Ferris and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-02 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Formation of the New Testament About fourteen years ago, while a student in Union Theological Seminary, I began a study of the ante-nicene Fathers, with a view to discover ing the forces and aims that caused the Christian Church to form a New Testament. I submitted an essay at that time, for which I was awarded the prize in New Testament Introduction. A few years later I read a paper on the same sub ject before the American Society of Church His tory. While a pastor in New Haven I did some work in the library of Yale University, especially on the fragments of Heracleon's Commentary of John, preserved for us by Origen, on the ground of authority underlying the Christianity of Clement of Alexandria, and on several other subjects closely related to this discussion. Book Modern Interpretations of the Gospel Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book Modern Interpretations of the Gospel Life Classic Reprint written by A. A. Berle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Interpretations of the Gospel Life The New Testament is essentially a modern book. En grafted into the life and permeating the thought of the centuries as is the power of its Central Figure, the one thing that impresses the student more than all else, as he endeavors to catch the spirit of New Testament teaching, is its thor oughly modern tone. The setting is local and Oriental, but the principles and their application are universal and human. The discourses here gathered together are an attempt to select from a ministry extending over a period of ten years, most of it in a single pulpit, the ruling ideas and efforts of that ministry to present a spherical view of the application of the Christian gospel to the whole of modern life, as we live it in America. Carrying out this purpose, I have made several excursions into the region of apostolic psychology; then again, I have tried to apply the teachings of Christ to the social and political life of our time, an experiment always fruitful of danger and misunderstanding, but none the less necessary for that. I have further outlined the relations of Christianity to our educational ideas and method, especially the place of the Bible in university instruction, following this with a literary criticism or two, in which I have made some observations on the literary and dramatic portraiture of gospel ideas. Then, too, I have added a number of dis courses on the spiritual life itself, as distinguished from the various modes of it which I have been describing.
