Book New View of the QCD Phase Diagram

Download or read book New View of the QCD Phase Diagram written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quarkyonic matter is confining but can have densities much larger than 3QCD. Its existence isargued in the large Nc limit of QCD and implies that there are at least three phases of QCD with greatly different bulk properties. These are a Confined Phase of hadrons, a Deconfined Phase ofquarks and gluons, and the Quarkyonic Phase. In the Quarkyonic Phase, the baryon density isaccounted for by a quasi-free gas of quarks, and the the antiquarks and gluons are confined intomesons, glueballs. Quarks near the Fermi surface also are treated as baryons. (In addition tothese phases, there is a color superconducting phase that has vastly different transport properties than the above, but with bulk properties, such as pressure and energy density, that are not greatlydifferent than that of Quarkyonic Matter.).

Book Strongly Interacting Matter in Magnetic Fields

Download or read book Strongly Interacting Matter in Magnetic Fields written by Dmitri Kharzeev and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-08 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The physics of strongly interacting matter in an external magnetic field is presently emerging as a topic of great cross-disciplinary interest for particle, nuclear, astro- and condensed matter physicists. It is known that strong magnetic fields are created in heavy ion collisions, an insight that has made it possible to study a variety of surprising and intriguing phenomena that emerge from the interplay of quantum anomalies, the topology of non-Abelian gauge fields, and the magnetic field. In particular, the non-trivial topological configurations of the gluon field induce a non-dissipative electric current in the presence of a magnetic field. These phenomena have led to an extended formulation of relativistic hydrodynamics, called chiral magnetohydrodynamics. Hitherto unexpected applications in condensed matter physics include graphene and topological insulators. Other fields of application include astrophysics, where strong magnetic fields exist in magnetars and pulsars. Last but not least, an important new theoretical tool that will be revisited and which made much of the progress surveyed in this book possible is the holographic principle - the correspondence between quantum field theory and gravity in extra dimensions. Edited and authored by the pioneers and leading experts in this newly emerging field, this book offers a valuable resource for a broad community of physicists and graduate students.

Book Exploring the QCD Phase Diagram at STAR

Download or read book Exploring the QCD Phase Diagram at STAR written by Dylan Neff and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum ChromoDynamics (QCD) is a corner stone of the Standard Model. In the non-perturbative regime first principle calculation is very difficult but phenomenology is rich. The many-body dynamics of quarks interacting in a deconfined state, Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP), produces emergent phenomena which are not manifest in the theory's Lagrangian. QGP can be created in relativistic heavy ion collisions which provide an opportunity to experimentally probe this exotic QCD matter. Of particular interest is the structure of the QCD phase diagram. While the transition from QGP to hadron gas is a cross-over at high collision energies, RHIC's beam energy scan program covers the high baryon density region of the phase diagram to search for signs of a first-order transition and its accompanying critical point. Bubbling is a general characteristic of first-order phase transitions and may lead to clusters of quarks which coalesce into final state protons in heavy ion collisions. We construct a new observable, $\Delta \sigma^2$, to search for excess clustering in the azimuthal distributions of identified proton tracks. We show that the effects of detector inefficiency and elliptic flow can be corrected and that the observable behaves as expected in various models and simulations. $\Delta \sigma^2$ is measured in STAR's Beam Energy Scan I data set and a strong repulsive interaction among protons is observed. The repulsion is found to depend heavily on the event multiplicity, increasing dramatically in magnitude as the event multiplicity decreases. Energy dependence, absent in model calculations, is observed in STAR data, suggesting a possible scenario of an energy dependent attractive correlation beneath a repulsive background.

Book excerpt: At high baryon number density, it has been proposed that a new phase of QCD matter controlsthe physics. This matter is confining but can have densities much larger than 3QCD. Its existenceis argued from large Nc approximations, and model computations. It is approximately chirallysymmetric.

Book The Deconfinement Transition of QCD

Download or read book The Deconfinement Transition of QCD written by Claudia Ratti and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-06-14 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few years, numerical simulations of QCD on the lattice have reached a new level of accuracy. A wide range of thermodynamic quantities is now available in the continuum limit and for physical quark masses. This allows a comparison with measurements from heavy ion collisions for the first time. Furthermore, calculations of dynamical quantities are also becoming available. The combined effort from first principles and experiment allows to gain an unprecedented understanding of the properties of quark-gluon plasma. This concise text, geared towards postgraduate students and newcomers to the field, carefully introduces and reviews the state-of-the-art techniques and results from lattice simulations and connects them to the experimental information from RHIC and the LHC.
