Book New Things and Old in Saint Thomas Aquinas

Download or read book New Things and Old in Saint Thomas Aquinas written by Saint Thomas Aquinas and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-04 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " All I have written seems chaff to me." Thus six months before his death spoke the greatest mind of the Middle Ages. He had up to this time lived a life full of labour, lecturing, writing, dictating, and praying; and now after having received a revelation he laid aside his pen and would write no more. His favourite disciple, with a directness characteristic of him, asked him why he would not write when he was in the midst of a great work; to which he simply replied, "I cannot." Being pressed still further he again said, " I cannot, for all that I have written seems chaff to me." This incident, well attested as it is, is so clearly sincere that no interpretation of it can rob it of its grandeur and pathos. The words were spoken by a man still only in his prime, as far as years go, but one whom incessant labour and devotion to a high cause had brought, at the age of forty nine, into the valley of the shadow. His name is one that all men of education profess to know. His fame is noised abroad scarcely less by those who ignorantly contemn, than by those who injudiciously worship him. But his life, his real concrete life, is still in many ways a closed book. For while one class of men look on him as a great intellect, and another as a great holiness, the human lines of Aquinas have been singularly neglected. His holiness and his greatness in the eyes of a critical generation will depend, not on the mysteries of his extraordinary raptures, but on the way in which he a man bore himself in the jostle of life with men. If this has not been overlooked by his many biographers it has, for the most part, been undervalued, and it is fitting that in this age, which bears some resemblance to the Renaissance in the re-discovery of the enduring masterpieces of olden time either from neglect or undiscerning attention, some attempt should be made to show Aquinas to the world, not as a saint on a pedestal or a statue above the rostrum, but as one faring in the road of life and faring manfully. Book The Creative Retrieval of Saint Thomas Aquinas

Download or read book The Creative Retrieval of Saint Thomas Aquinas written by W. Norris Clarke and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2009-08-25 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: W. Norris Clarke has chosen the fifteen essays in this collection, five of which appear here for the first time, as the most significant of the more than seventy he has written over the course of a long career. Clarke is known for his development of a Thomistic personalism. To be a person, according to Saint Thomas, is to take conscious self-possession of one's own being, to be master of oneself. But our incarnate mode of being human involves living in a body whose life unfolds across time, and is inevitably dispersed across time. If we wish to know fully who we are, we need to assimilate and integrate this dispersal, so that our lives become a coherent story. In addition to the existentialist thought of Etienne Gilson and others, Clarke draws on the Neoplatonic dimension of participation. Existence as act and participation have been the central pillars of his metaphysical thought, especially in its unique manifestation in the human person. The essays collected here cover a wide range of philosophical, ethical, religious, and aesthetic topics. Through them sounds a very personal voice, one that has inspired generations of students and scholars.

Book excerpt: The famous novelist de Wohl presents a stimulating historical novel about the great St. Thomas Aquinas, set against the violent background of the Italy of the Crusades. He tells the intriguing story of St. Thomas who defied his illustrious, prominent family's ambition for him to have great power in the Church by taking a vow of poverty and joining the Dominicans. The battles and Crusades of the 13th century and the ruthlessness of the excommunicated Emperor Frederick II play a big part of the story, but it is Thomas of Aquino who dominates this book. De Wohl succeeds notably in portraying the exceptional quality of this man, a fusion of mighty intellect and childlike simplicity. A pupil of St. Albert the Great, the humble Thomas, through an intense life of study, writing, prayer, preaching and contemplation, ironically rose to become the influential figure of his age, and later was proclaimed by the Church as the Angelic Doctor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS COLLECTION [22 BOOKS] — Quality Formatting and Value — Active Index, Multiple Table of Contents for all Books — Multiple Illustrations Thomas Aquinas, O.P., was an Italian Dominican friar, Catholic priest, and Doctor of the Church. He was an immensely influential philosopher, theologian, and jurist in the tradition of scholasticism, within which he is also known as the Doctor Angelicus and the Doctor Communis. The name Aquinas identifies his ancestral origins in the county of Aquino in present-day Lazio, where his family held land until 1137. He was the foremost classical proponent of natural theology and the father of Thomism. His influence on Western thought is considerable, and much of modern philosophy developed or opposed his ideas, particularly in the areas of ethics, natural law, metaphysics, and political theory. Unlike many currents in the Church of the time, Thomas embraced several ideas put forward by Aristotle—whom he called "the Philosopher"—and attempted to synthesize Aristotelian philosophy with the principles of Christianity. The works for which he is best known are the Summa Theologiae and the Summa contra Gentiles. His commentaries on Sacred Scripture and on Aristotle form an important part of his body of work. Furthermore, Thomas is distinguished for his eucharistic hymns, which form a part of the Church's liturgy. —BOOKS— AN APOLOGY FOR THE RELIGIOUS ORDERS ARISTOTLE ON INTERPRETATION CATENA AUREA: COMMENTARY ON THE FOUR GOSPELS COLLECTED OUT OF THE WORKS OF THE FATHERS: VOLUMES 1 TO 4 COMMENTARY ON ARISTOTLE’S DE ANIMA COMMENTARY ON ARISTOTLE'S PHYSICS COMMENTARY ON THE METAPHYSICS COMPENDIUM OF THEOLOGY DE MEMORIA ET REMINISCENTIA EXPLANATION OF THE LORD'S PRAYER EXPLANATION OF THE TEN COMMANDMENTS NATURE AND GRACE: SELECTIONS FROM THE SUMMA THEOLOGICA OF THOMAS AQUINAS NINETY-NINE HOMILIES OF SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS: UPON THE EPISTLES AND GOSPELS FOR FORTY-NINE SUNDAYS OF THE CHRISTIAN YEAR OF GOD AND HIS CREATURES ON KINGSHIP: TO THE KING OF CYPRUS ON THE POWER OF GOD REFUTATION OF THE PERNICIOUS TEACHING OF THOSE WHO WOULD DETER MEN FROM ENTERING RELIGIOUS LIFE THE BREAD OF LIFE: OR SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS ON THE ADORABLE SACRAMENT OF THE ALTAR THE PERFECTION OF THE SPIRITUAL LIFE THE RELIGIOUS STATE: THE EPISCOPATE AND THE PRIESTLY OFFICE THE SOUL THE SUMMA CONTRA GENTILES THE SUMMA THEOLOGICA: COMPLETE EDITION PUBLISHER: AETERNA PRESS
