Book Electric Flight Technology

Download or read book Electric Flight Technology written by Ravi Rajamani and published by SAE International. This book was released on 2018-05-28 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The environmental impact of hydrocarbon-burning aircraft is one of the main motivations for the move to electric propulsion in aerospace. Also, cars, buses, and trucks are incorporating electric or hybrid-electric propulsion systems, reducing the pressure on hydrocarbons and lowering the costs of electrical components. The economies of scale necessitated by the automotive industry will help contain costs in the aviation sector as well. The use of electric propulsion in airplanes is not a new phenomenon. However, it is only recently that it has taken off in a concrete manner with a viable commercial future. The Electric Flight Technology: Unfolding of a New Future reviews the history of this field, discusses the key underlying technologies, and describes how the future for these technologies will likely unfold, distinguishing between all-electric (AE) and hybrid-electric (HE) architectures. Written by Dr. Ravi Rajamani, it covers the essential information needed to understand this new technology wave taking hold in the aerospace industry. The Electric Flight Technology: Unfolding of a New Future covers fundamental topics such as: • The history of electric propulsion, including its evolution from using traditional electricity, to solar power to batteries as sources to sustain propulsion and flight. • The various architectures being considered for electric aircraft, specifically small general aviation (GA) aircraft and larger business jets; single-aisle commercial aircraft; and larger twin-aisle commercial aircraft. • The various systems and subsystems of an electric aircraft, along with how various subsystems in the vehicle can be integrated in a more optimal manner. In the future, the existing tube-and-wing configuration will not be the only available architecture; instead we will be more likely to find an architecture where the propulsion system is embedded within the airframe. • The future trends in this arena and what we can expect to see in the next decade or so.

Book Small Transport Aircraft Technology

Download or read book Small Transport Aircraft Technology written by Louis J. Williams and published by The Minerva Group, Inc.. This book was released on 2001-06 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small Transport Aircraft Technology, originally published in 1980 provides information on commuter airline trends and aircraft developments, and presents the results and conclusions of the full set of completed STAT studies. Five airplane manufacturers, five engine manufacturers, and two propeller manufacturers performed these studies. This report also summarized portions of NASA?s overall aeronautics research and technology programs which are applicable to commuter aircraft design, and suggests areas of technology that might beneficially be expanded or initiated to air and encourage U.S. commuter aircraft manufacturers in their evolution of improved aircraft for this market.

Book Conceptual Design for a Future Small General Aviation Multi engine Training Aircraft

Download or read book Conceptual Design for a Future Small General Aviation Multi engine Training Aircraft written by Ashwini Bhadravati Ramesh and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NA*****Due to a highly competitive environment, the General Aviation (GA) aircraft industry of today is often forced to design their products for various purposes and markets, to gain the largest possible market share. Niche markets, as the market for training aircraft for commercial pilot training, are often only served with products developed for other markets. The market for training aircraft for commercial pilot training is a niche, but due to the increasing demand of aircraft and pilots, it is a fast growing market. In addition, the needs for environmentally friendly and sustainable solutions, as well as the increasing complexity of the integrated systems, in todays large airlines, require new concepts for this market. The thesis is structured in a theoretical and a practical part both following a stepwise research design with the aim to answer several research questions. The theoretical part analyses the current situation of the GA multi-engine pilot training aircraft and focus on factors which have to be taken into account for the designs. Furthermore this part describes how key factors and new technology can be established and evaluated. The practical part discusses the key factors and the chosen technologies for the future GA multi-engine training aircraft. Upon selection of a technology this part explains its advantages and disadvantages for possible configuration of the training aircraft. The results of practical and theoretical part provides hybrid as the suitable technology and proposes a low wing, T-tail with aft placed ducted fan engine as a conceptual design.

Book Maintaining U S Leadership in Aeronautics

Download or read book Maintaining U S Leadership in Aeronautics written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-10-07 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the completion of the National Research Council (NRC) report, Maintaining U.S. Leadership in Aeronautics: Scenario-Based Strategic Planning for NASA's Aeronautics Enterprise (1997), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Office of Aeronautics and Space Transportation Technology requested that the NRC remain involved in its strategic planning process by conducting a study to identify a short list of revolutionary or breakthrough technologies that could be critical to the 20 to 25 year future of aeronautics and space transportation. These technologies were to address the areas of need and opportunity identified in the above mentioned NRC report, which have been characterized by NASA's 10 goals (see Box ES-1) in "Aeronautics & Space Transportation Technology: Three Pillars for Success" (NASA, 1997). The present study would also examine the 10 goals to determine if they are likely to be achievable, either through evolutionary steps in technology or through the identification and application of breakthrough ideas, concepts, and technologies.
