Book Old Age Security

Download or read book Old Age Security written by Ramgopal Agarwala and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seventh edition of this annual report reviews the long-term prospects for developing countries in light of changes in the global environment and provides a detailed discussion of selected aspects of the global integration process in those countries. The first chapter evaluates prospects for the major elements of the external environment affecting developing countries and the medium-to-long-term outlook for developing countries themselves. The report forecasts that the external environment for developing countries remains broadly favorable. Among the main policy challenges faced by these countries is their ability to adapt to long-run shifts in market opportunities and heightened competitive pressures brought on by global trade liberalization--now increasingly focused on liberalization of trade in services--rising global production, and other forms of global integration. The chapter considers the implications for the world economy of rapid growth and integration in large developing countries such as China, India, and Brazil in the period to 2020. The second chapter looks at the move toward greater globalization of production, broadly defined as cross-border production by multinational enterprises and their networks of affiliates, subcontractors, and other partners. Within this context, the chapter addresses the significance of global production in world output in main groups of countries and economic sectors; factors driving the trend toward global production, including heightened competition, worldwide policy liberalization, and rapid technological progress; the benefits that developing countries can derive from global production, such as new technologies and improved efficiency practices; and the issues for policymakers seeking to enhance participation in global production and maximize its benefits for host countries.

Book Choices in Financing Health Care and Old Age Security

Download or read book Choices in Financing Health Care and Old Age Security written by Nicholas Prescott and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1998 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In November 1997 the World Bank and Singapore's Institute of Policy Studies sponsored a conference, "Financing Health Care and Old Age Security", to assess and identify potential solutions to these concerns. It addressed a topic of concern to nearly every country, developing and industrial, that is, how to deal with the implications of financing medical care and income security for rapidly aging populations. The issues identified and the solutions proposed can provide insight and guidance for policymakers, researchers, and others interested in addressing these challenges now. Of special interest are the contributors' analyses of Singapore's unique, integrated approach to managing social risk, which is based on mandatory individual savings accounts.

Book Aging Economic Growth and Old age Security in Asia

Download or read book Aging Economic Growth and Old age Security in Asia written by Donghyun Park and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Population aging is perhaps the single biggest economic and social obstacle confronting AsiaÕs future. The region-wide demographic transition towards an older population is fundamentally reshaping the demographic landscape, and is giving rise to two key socio-economic challenges. This timely book provides an in-depth analysis of these challenges and presents concrete policy options for tackling them. First, the expert contributors argue, Asia must find ways to sustain rapid economic growth in the face of less favorable demographics, which implies slower growth of the workforce. Second, they contend, Asia must find ways to deliver affordable, adequate and sustainable old-age economic security for its growing elderly population. Underpinned by rigorous analysis, a wide range of concrete policy options for sustaining economic growth while delivering economic security for the elderly are then presented. These include Asia-wide policy options Ð relevant to the entire region Ð such as building up strong national pension systems, whilst other policy options are more relevant to sub-groups of countries. This stimulating and informative book will be of great interest to academics, students and researchers with an interest in Asian studies, economics generally, and more specifically, public sector economics.

Book Constructing a Social Welfare System for All in China

Download or read book Constructing a Social Welfare System for All in China written by China Development Research Foundation and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China Development Research Foundation is one of the leading economic think tanks in China, where many of the details of China’s economic reform have been formulated. Its work and publications therefore provide great insights into what the Chinese themselves think about economic reform and how it should develop. This book sets out the general objectives, principles and framework of a proposed new social welfare system for China, putting forward relevant policy recommendations. It provides a comprehensive overview of China’s current welfare services, including retirement pensions, education, health, employment, housing and social security payments, and goes on to cost the proposed new social welfare system and assess the government’s capacity for implementing it. It shows how the new system will, within an integrated framework, provide comprehensive welfare for all, including rural and urban citizens, migrant workers and disadvantaged groups such as rural and urban poor. It also shows how the new system will aim to balance economic and social development whilst maintaining China’s high economic growth rate, increasing domestic demand and promoting economic restructuring.

Book Routledge Handbook of European Welfare Systems

Download or read book Routledge Handbook of European Welfare Systems written by Sonja Blum and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-21 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published ten years after the first edition, this new Handbook offers topical, and comprehensive information on the welfare systems of all 28 EU member states and their recent reforms, giving the reader an invaluable introduction and basis for comparative welfare research. Additional chapters provide detailed information on EU social policy, as well as comparative analyses of European welfare systems and their reform pathways. For this second edition, all chapters have been updated and substantially revised, and Croatia additionally included. The second edition of this Handbook is most timely, given the often-fundamental welfare state transformations against the background of the financial and economic crises, transforming social policy ideas, as well as political shifts in a number of European countries. The book sets out to analyse these new developments when it comes to social policy. In the first part, all country chapters provide systematic and comparable information on the foundations of the different national welfare systems and their characteristics. In the second part, using a joint conceptual foundation, they focus on policy changes (especially of the last two decades) in different social policy areas, including old-age, labour market, family, healthcare, and social assistance policies. As the comparative chapters conclude, European welfare system landscapes have been in constant motion in the last two decades. While austerity is not to be seen on the aggregate level, the in-depth country studies show that all policy sectors have been characterised by different reform directions and ideas. The findings not only reveal both change and continuity, but also policy reversal as a distinct type that characterises social policy reform. The book provides a rich resource to the international welfare state research community, and is also useful for social policy teaching.

Book The Transformation of Old Age Security

Download or read book The Transformation of Old Age Security written by Jill Quadagno and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1988-02-18 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why did the United States lag behind Germany, Britain, and Sweden in adopting a national plan for the elderly? When the Social Security Act was finally enacted in 1935, why did it depend on a class-based double standard? Why is old age welfare in the United States still less comprehensive than its European counterparts? In this sophisticated analytical chronicle of one hundred years of American welfare history, Jill Quadagno explores the curious birth of old age assistance in the United States. Grounded in historical research and informed by social science theory, the study reveals how public assistance grew from colonial-era poor laws, locally financed and administered, into a massive federal bureaucracy.

Book Pension Reform in Europe

Download or read book Pension Reform in Europe written by Camila Arza and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-08-07 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new book provides a cross-country comparative analysis of the key issues shaping the latest pension reforms in Europe: political games, welfare models and pathways, population reactions, and observed and expected outcomes. Pension reform has been a top policy priority for European governments in the last decade. Ageing populations, changing labour market patterns and the process of European integration are the ‘irresistible forces’ pushing for reform throughout the region. The Political Economy of Pension Reform evaluates the political forces that make pension reform viable in different national and institutional contexts and the nature of political bargains, actors and cleavages surrounding policy change. The volume also examines the nature and outcomes of pension reform experiences in Europe, searching for a solution to the financial challenge posed by growing pension budgets. By addressing the nature of change, the pathways of reform, and the outcomes of the new pension mix in the region, the authors conclude with an analysis of people’s perceptions and attitudes towards pension policy and their acceptance or otherwise of different reform options. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of international political economy, European politics, and social policy.

This book was released on 2001 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China's population is aging rapidly: the old age dependency ratio will rise from 11 percent in 1999 to 25 percent in 2030 and 36 percent in 2050. Currently, three workers support one retiree; without reform, the system dependency ratio will climb to 69 percent in 2030 and 79 percent in 2050. The lack of an effective sustainable pension systemn is a serious obstacle to Chinese economic reform.
