Book China s Influence and American Interests

Download or read book China s Influence and American Interests written by Larry Diamond and published by Hoover Press. This book was released on 2019-08-01 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Americans are generally aware of China's ambitions as a global economic and military superpower, few understand just how deeply and assertively that country has already sought to influence American society. As the authors of this volume write, it is time for a wake-up call. In documenting the extent of Beijing's expanding influence operations inside the United States, they aim to raise awareness of China's efforts to penetrate and sway a range of American institutions: state and local governments, academic institutions, think tanks, media, and businesses. And they highlight other aspects of the propagandistic “discourse war” waged by the Chinese government and Communist Party leaders that are less expected and more alarming, such as their view of Chinese Americans as members of a worldwide Chinese diaspora that owes undefined allegiance to the so-called Motherland.Featuring ideas and policy proposals from leading China specialists, China's Influence and American Interests argues that a successful future relationship requires a rebalancing toward greater transparency, reciprocity, and fairness. Throughout, the authors also strongly state the importance of avoiding casting aspersions on Chinese and on Chinese Americans, who constitute a vital portion of American society. But if the United States is to fare well in this increasingly adversarial relationship with China, Americans must have a far better sense of that country's ambitions and methods than they do now.

Book excerpt: In the midst of a superhero takeover with groundbreaking films bringing comic books to the big screen on an unprecedented scale, one cinematic saga would forever alter the landscape of superhero movies and Hollywood ... Batman. Superman. Wonder Woman. As three of the most iconic heroes of all time, the task of translating these beloved DC Comics characters and their stories to film would be the ultimate challenge for any director. By embracing this challenge, Zack Snyder-who gained popularity following successes with 300 and Watchmen-would find himself at the epicenter of controversy. Shaped by studio conflicts, creative differences, increasingly divisive public opinion, social media, the COVID-19 pandemic, and personal tragedy, the making of Snyder's films (Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League) would come together to form a remarkable tale. In The Snyderverse Saga, entertainment journalist Daryn Kirscht chronicles the epic behind-the-scenes true story of Snyder's DC Comics films, their revolutionary impact on superhero movies and Hollywood, and the power of the fandom in fighting for creative freedom. After achieving victory following the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement, a new wave is on the rise with #RestoreTheSnyderVerse to adapt the cinematic landscape to the modern world... a "Knightmare" world. Will the "Snyderverse" continue? Only time will tell...

Book The Superman Files

Download or read book The Superman Files written by Matthew Manning and published by Andrews McMeel Publishing. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Superman Files reveals the secret life of the man named Clark Kent and the world of the greatest superhero. It’s a comprehensive account of his history, employing clippings from the Daily Planet, journal entries, surviving artifacts from Krypton, schematics for the Fortress of Solitude and other technology, files from Stryker's Island Prison, as well as hundreds of "photographs" of Superman's enemies and allies culled from modern Superman comics. The Superman Files offers a complete, in-depth life story of the Man of Steel, from his birth on Krypton as Kal-El through his present, as Clark Kent and Superman, and even onward into the future. One thousand years from now, a group of superpowered teenagers is inspired by Superman’s legacy. They band together and form the Legion of Super-Heroes, a crime-fighting group dedicated to protecting the citizens of the United Planets. One of these teens is Brainiac 5, a highly intelligent descendant of Superman’s arch foe, the original Brainiac. Like many people in the 31st Century, members of the Legion idolize Superman. They frequent the Superman Museum and marvel at tales of his past. A few of them even travel back in time to Clark Kent’s teenage years. They recruit him to their team, thereby jumpstarting the adventures of Superboy, the Boy of Steel. In a future without precise records of the 21st Century, Brainiac 5 takes it upon himself to compile a tribute to his hero and friend. Collecting accounts from a myriad of sources, he compiles the universe’s greatest historical record of the life and times of the Man of Steel. The Superman Files chronicles seventy-five years of adventures in one easy-to-understand history of the Last Son of Krypton. Appealing to Superman fans of any age—from new collectors just starting out with the New 52 to longtime readers who have followed the character from his very first adventures—there is something for everyone. With a modern tone and a deep respect for his legacy, The Superman Files is not only entertaining, but it is also a complete and thorough history of the Man of Steel. Book A Portrait of the Auteur as Fanboy

Download or read book A Portrait of the Auteur as Fanboy written by Anastasia Salter and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasingly over the past decade, fan credentials on the part of writers, directors, and producers have come to be seen as a guarantee of quality media making—the “fanboy auteur.” Figures like Joss Whedon are both one of “us” and one of “them.” This is a strategy of marketing and branding—it is a claim from the auteur himself or industry PR machines that the presence of an auteur who is also a fan means the product is worth consuming. Such claims that fan credentials guarantee quality are often contested, with fans and critics alike rejecting various auteur figures as the true leader of their respective franchises. That split, between assertions of fan and auteur status and acceptance (or not) of that status, is key to unravelling the fan auteur. In A Portrait of the Auteur as Fanboy: The Construction of Authorship in Transmedia Franchises, authors Anastasia Salter and Mel Stanfill examine this phenomenon through a series of case studies featuring fanboys. The volume discusses both popular fanboys, such as J. J. Abrams, Kevin Smith, and Joss Whedon, as well as fangirls like J. K. Rowling, E L James, and Patty Jenkins, and dissects how the fanboy-fangirl auteur dichotomy is constructed and defended by popular media and fans in online spaces, and how this discourse has played in maintaining the exclusionary status quo of geek culture. This book is particularly timely given current discourse, including such incidents as the controversy surrounding Joss Whedon’s so-called feminism, the publication of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and contestation over authorial voices in the DC cinematic universe, as well as broader conversations about toxic masculinity and sexual harassment in Hollywood.
