During that time he devoted himself with increased ardor to the special branches of study in which from the outset he had been interested. In the following year he was made tutor in English. This position he held until 1890, when he was appointed assistant pro fessor of the same subject. At the meeting. Of the Corporation of the University in May, 1893, he was elected by it to the chair of Rhetoric and Belles Lettres. Happily married to a wife of congenial tastes, who speedily learned to sympathize with him in the studies which he had made peculiarly his own, he had every reason to expect a long career of usefulness, which would be attended with distinction to himself and would confer distinction upon the institution with which he was connected. But his health had never been vigorous, and in the very summer vacation fol lowing his appointment a fever, which came upon him almost without warning, and which seemed at first of slight importance, carried him off after an illness that lasted little more than a week. Comments on ancient writings are scarcely so common as formerly; no great part of our literary talent is devoted to the illustration of the ancient masters; but what seems at first sight less dignified, annotation on modern writings was never so frequent. Hazlitt started the question, whether it would not be as well to review works which did not appear, in lieu of those which did - wishin g, as a reviewer, to escape the labour of perusing print, and, as a man, to save his fellow-creatures from the slow torture of tedious extracts. But, though approximations may frequently be noticed - though the neglect of authors and independence of critics are on the increase - this conception, in its grandeur, has never been carried out. We are surprised at first sight, that writers should wish to comment on one another; it appears a tedious mode of stating opinions, and a needless confusion of personal facts with abstract arguments; and some, especially authors who have been censured, say that the cause is laziness - that it is easier to write a review than a book - and that re viewers are, as Coleridge declared, a' species of maggots, inferior to bookworms, living on the delicious brains of real genius. Indeed it would be very nice, but our world is so imperfect. This idea is wholly false. Doubtless it is easier to write one review than one book: but not, which is the real case, many reviews than one book. A deeper cause must be looked for. From the universities came men with the background of humanistic studies, endowed with wit and with poetic talents instinct with the beau tiful or the sublime. With the advent of these and of Shakespeare, the London stage won to its new standard all necessary to make it complete but the constructive critic. Such a man was not only required to supplement the artistic completeness Of Elizabethan drama, but to serve lesser writers with education in fundamental form. So, unmis takably the man for his time was Ben Jonson, in no respect more rare than in his erudition. His intellectual grasp is known to have compre hended even the subtlest knowledge of his times and much mediaeval lore, but it is impressive to con sider only his classic learning. The first of English poets, with the wealth of Greece as well as Rome at his command, he has not, in periods especially animated by the Greek spirit, been surpassed for the profoundness of his literary acquaintance. Others have exhibited more intimate knowledge and de light; but Jonson in his day stood alone in his championship and first in his conscious theory of art based upon scholarship. While a catalogue of Jonson's Greek and Latin reading would fill line after line, the story of his educational advantages can be briefly told. All quality and inspiration in his early training may safely be attributed by Jonson's own grateful acknowledgment to the famous second master of Westminster School, the most learned, and my honored friend, Master Camden,1 to whom Every M an in his Humor was dedicated. Under his instruction was laid the foundation of vast and exact translation. The jottings of idle moments, contained in the Discoveries, are a revelation Of the range at Jonson's command. Incidental anecdote or authority quoted in this memorandum laid under contribution not only the masterpieces of poetry, philosophy, and oratory, but more obscure gram marians, sophists, and historians.2 With his vigor ous scholarship and naturally retentive memory, Jonson could scarcely be surpassed for the richness of his quotation and allusion.
