Bringing together all the important facets and state-of-the-art research, the two well-structured volumes cover film assembly and depostion, functionality and patterning, and analysis and characterization. The result is an in-depth understanding of the phenomena, ordering, scale effects, fabrication, and analysis of polymer ultrathin films. This book will be a valuable addition for Materials Scientists, Polymer Chemists, Surface Scientists, Bioengineers, Coatings Specialists, Chemical Engineers, and Scientists working in this important research field and industry.

Book Mechanical and Charge Transport Properties of Alkanethiol Self assembled Monolayers on Au 111 Surface

Download or read book Mechanical and Charge Transport Properties of Alkanethiol Self assembled Monolayers on Au 111 Surface written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between charge transport and mechanical properties of alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers (SAM) on Au(111) films has been investigated using an atomic force microscope with a conductive tip. Molecular tilts induced by the pressure applied by the tip cause stepwise increases in film conductivity. A decay constant [beta] = 0.57 ± 0.03 Å−1 was found for the current passing through the film as a function of tip-substrate separation due to this molecular tilt. This is significantly smaller than the value of ≈ 1 Å−1 found when the separation is changed by changing the length of the alkanethiol molecules. Calculations indicate that for isolated dithiol molecules S-bonded to hollow sites, the junction conductance does not vary significantly as a function of molecular tilt. The impact of S-Au bonding on SAM conductance is discussed.

Book Structural Investigations of 11 phenoxyundecanethiol Self assembled Monolayers and Their Effect on the Growth of Carbon60 Fullerene Overlayers

Download or read book Structural Investigations of 11 phenoxyundecanethiol Self assembled Monolayers and Their Effect on the Growth of Carbon60 Fullerene Overlayers written by Miki Nakayama and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, we investigate the structure of 11-phenoxy undecanethiol self-assembled monolayers (phenoxy SAMs) on Au(111), and study their capability to act as a template for the growth of C60 overlayers. One of our goals of this work is to understand how the presence of a polar aromatic terminal group affects the structure of an alkanethiol-based SAM, and to build on the knowledge of SAMs with different molecules and functional groups to be able to better control the properties of the SAMs for real applications. Another goal of this thesis is to understand how the pi-pi interactions between C60 and an aromatic SAM can be used to potentially control the C60 overlayer structures and their electronic structure.

Book Handbook of Biofunctional Surfaces

Download or read book Handbook of Biofunctional Surfaces written by Wolfgang Knoll and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-05-22 with total page 1186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design and synthesis of molecularly or supramolecularly defined interfacial architectures have seen in recent years a remarkable growth of interest and scientific research activities for various reasons. On the one hand, it is generally believed that the construction of an interactive interface between the living world of cells, tissue, or whole organisms and the (inorganic or organic) materials world of technical devices such as implants or medical parts requires proper construction and structural (and functional) control of this organism–machine interface. It is still the very beginning of generating a better understanding of what is needed to make an organism tolerate implants, to guarantee bidirectional communication between microelectronic devices and living tissue, or to simply construct interactive biocompatibility of surfaces in general. This exhaustive book lucidly describes the design, synthesis, assembly and characterization, and bio-(medical) applications of interfacial layers on solid substrates with molecularly or supramolecularly controlled architectures. Experts in the field share their contributions that have been developed in recent years.
