Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods in Stream Ecology, Second Edition, provides a complete series of field and laboratory protocols in stream ecology that are ideal for teaching or conducting research. This updated edition reflects recent advances in the technology associated with ecological assessment of streams, including remote sensing. In addition, the relationship between stream flow and alluviation has been added, and a new chapter on riparian zones is also included. The book features exercises in each chapter; detailed instructions, illustrations, formulae, and data sheets for in-field research for students; and taxanomic keys to common stream invertebrates and algae. With a student-friendly price, this book is key for all students and researchers in stream and freshwater ecology, freshwater biology, marine ecology, and river ecology. This text is also supportive as a supplementary text for courses in watershed ecology/science, hydrology, fluvial geomorphology, and landscape ecology. - Exercises in each chapter - Detailed instructions, illustrations, formulae, and data sheets for in-field research for students - Taxanomic keys to common stream invertebrates and algae - Link from Chapter 22: FISH COMMUNITY COMPOSITION to an interactive program for assessing and modeling fish numbers

Book Guide to the Aquatic Insects of New Zealand

Download or read book Guide to the Aquatic Insects of New Zealand written by Michael J. Winterbourn and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth edition of this excellent identification guide to aquatic insects in New Zealand has been updated with the latest information, making it an essential resource as the demand for river surveys and water quality studies continues to grow. Since the third edition was published five years ago, there have been great advances in our knowledge of New Zealand's aquatic insects. This edition includes information from several new publications about the systematics of New Zealand aquatic insects. More than 80 new titles have been added to the reference list and cited in the text; this serves both to document taxonomic changes and to guide the reader to the expanding literature on the aquatic insects of NZ. The book provides keys to enable insects to be identified to the family or genus level. Notes on distribution, habitat, and problems likely to be encountered with identification are included, along with full references, glossary of terms, and an index of taxa, common names, and general subjects. This is a joint publication venture of the Entomological Society of New Zealand (Inc.) and the New Zealand Freshwater Sciences Society.

Book S wasserfauna Von Mitteleuropa Bd 21 26 Empididae

Download or read book S wasserfauna Von Mitteleuropa Bd 21 26 Empididae written by Rüdiger Wagner and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an up-to-date synopsis of aquatic dance flies (Clinocerinae and Hemerodromiinae), insects that have been studied for more than 200 years in Europe. Its publication comes about 80 years since the last summary report and follows a period when new scientific methods were applied to long-standing unresolved taxonomical, systematic problems. In a period of environmental change, it also provides information for habitat conservation. The inclusion of data for larvae, pupae and adults is aimed not only at professional scientists, but will be of interest to amateur researchers. The work provides comprehensive information on the morphology, ecology, behavior, flight period and geographical distribution of individual species. Keys for males of all species together with drawings of terminalia are given, although females must still be associated with active males. Keys to larvae and pupae are provided wherever possible. Drawings and photographs of wings and male terminalia are supplemented by photographs of larvae, pupae and adults of characteristic, widespread European species in their natural environment. The book covers the Central European Fauna and includes a few additional species from North Europe and Great Britain. Further, at the end of the presentation of every genus, all species described to date from all over Europe are listed so that people working in other European countries and even adjacent areas may get quick access to relevant information for their research and species identification. This is necessary because environmental change will affect distribution and abundance of genera and species restricted either to high-altitude mountains or to drying-up of streams and rivers. The authors Rdiger Wagner is a retired Researcher on zoology and limnology of the former River Station of the Max-Planck-Society and University of Kassel, interested in effects of environmental change on aquatic Diptera in the course of time. Marija Ivkovi is Associate Professor at the University of Zagreb, Croatia, interested in ecology, systematics, phylogeny and biogeography of aquatic Diptera, with special emphasis on aquatic Empididae, Clinocerinae and Hemerodromiinae. Adrian Plant is a Senior Researcher at Mahasarakham University, Thailand, interested in systematics, ecology and behaviour of Empidoidea, especially Hemerodromiinae.

  • Author : Glenn B. Wiggins

Download or read book Caddisflies written by Glenn B. Wiggins and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2005-12-15 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Caddisflies constitute the insect order Trichoptera in which some 10,000 species are known in the world, including about 1400 in North America. Fossil evidence shows that caddisflies originated in the Triassic period, 200-250 million years ago. They are important links in the movement of energy and nutrients through freshwater ecosystems due largely to the extraordinary diversification in their larval architecture, which includes portable and stationary shelters, silken filter nets, and osmotically semipermeable cocoons. Glenn Wiggins's Caddisflies is the foremost comprehensive reference source about these insects and is concerned with behavioural ecology, evolutionary history, biogeography, and biological diversity. Wiggins outlines fundamental concepts of aquatic ecology, illuminating the ways in which caddisflies help to make fresh waters work. Essential features of morphology, biology, and distribution are outlined for the twenty-six North American families of caddisflies and illustrated diagnostic keys are provided for larvae, pupae, and adults. The author also brings together information on caddisflies from widely scattered sources and provides comprehensive coverage of the scientific literature.

Book Proceedings of the Fifth International Symposium on Trichoptera

Download or read book Proceedings of the Fifth International Symposium on Trichoptera written by M. Bournaud and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we offered to host the 5th International Symposium on Trichoptera in Lyon in July 1986, we knew that for us the great Adventure was about to begin. On that July morning in 1983 in Clemson (South Carolina), we could only dimly imagine what the future held in store. One of the worst moment came, in fact, when we were told by th official scientific authorities that no subsidies would be forthcoming. This refusal meant that we would be unable to give any financial help to those colleagues with only modest means at their disposal. Let us hope that the publication of the Proceedings will convince certain French scientists, and the powers that be, that the study of Trichoptera represents a valid and exciting field of research. The American raid on Tripoli, which did not at the time seem to have any link with Trichoptera, threatened to act as a deterrent as far as the North American participants were concerned. However, the fears expressed by some of our colleagues (and not without reason, when we consider the series of terrorist attacks later carried out in France) were soon allayed, although the organisers of the Congress must confess to having kept a discreet eye open for any suspicious brown paper parcels or unattended luggage.
