Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical and Descriptive Account of South Australia: Founded on the Experience of a Three Years' Residence in That Colony IN presenting the following pages to the Public, the writer has only one object in view, and that is to place the British Public, and especially that portion of it which takes an interest in Emigration in general, and South Australian Emigration in particular, as well as such as may entertain an intention of emigrating, in possession of a plain unvarnished statement of facts, as to the character and capabilities of a Colony which has never been fairly represented in this country - a Colony which has been slandered by enemies interested elsewhere on the one hand, and perhaps as much injured by the well-meant but injudicious statements of its friends on the other - a Colony which has had to grapple with difliculties and anomalies of no ordinary kind - a Colony which, I feel convinced, must ere long rank high among the Foreign possessions of this vast empire. Book An Account of the English Colony in New South Wales Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Account of the English Colony in New South Wales A few changes made by the printers deserve to be noted. Catchwords at the bottom of the page, surviving from the Old days Of parchment rolls, and still (or recently) in use in an Old-fashioned review, disappear between the first and second editions; that was a sensible change that was accomplished in a space Of six years. The frequent use Of capitals in old books, still found in German substantives, is on the decline in the abridged edition, and the Eastern Coast of the first edition becomes the east coast of the second. The substitu tion of governor for Governor suggests transatlantic models. The punctuation, finally, has been improved. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First in the Field: A Story of New South Wales "I say, don't, Green: let the poor things alone!" "You mind your own business. Oh! bother the old thorns!" Brian Green snatched his hand out of the quickset hedge into which he had thrust it, to reach the rough outside of a nest built by a bird, evidently in the belief that the hawthorn leaves would hide it from sight, and while they were growing the thorns would protect it from mischievous hands. But the leaves opened out slowly that cold spring, and a party of boys from Dr. Dunham's school, the Friary, Broadhurst, Kent, was not long in spying out the unlucky parents' attempt at house-building and nursery. Still, the thorns did their duty to some extent when Brian Green of the red head leaped across the big dry ditch, rudely crushing a great clump of primroses and forcing them down the slope, for when the freckled-faced lad thrust his hand in to grasp the nest a sharp prick made him withdraw it, while this action brought it in contact with a natural chevaux de frise, scarified the back, and made a long scratch on his thumb. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Colonial Autocracy: New South Wales Under Governor Macquarie, 1810-1821 The selection of the period of New South Wales history covered by this book, of the years 1810 to 1821, may seem to call for ex planation. The choice was not arbitrarily made, but was due to the fact that the publication of the historical records of the State commenced by the New South Wales Government in 1892 ceased in 1901 with the issue of the seventh volume of the series, containing the documents of the years 1809 to 1811. These documents consisted of official papers and a few private letters, and by their help the history of the Colony may be traced from Captain Cook's first voyage to the end of 181 1. It was there fore obvious that further research should commence where this publication left off. By going back, however, to the commence ment of Governor Macquarie's rule in 18 10, the period is brought to a natural conclusion with his return to England in the begin ning of 1822. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diggings and the Bush: Reminiscences of Australia Diggings of New South W'ales. A residence of four years justifies the writer in stating that the description of the country and social life is perfectly true. At this season of the year hundreds of English families have one vacant chair which they would gladly, oh! How gladly, see occupied by some new lonely wanderer; and the hearts of many disappointed diggers, even at this moment, yearn for their native land. This consideration induces the belief that these simple stories will receive a welcome at many a fireside, and for a brief hour bring true hearts once more together; should they do so, they will not have been written in vain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Wallaby: Through Victoria As it is I can only write about Victoria as I know it. There are many mistakes that I may have made through my inability to see all sides of a question; but they are at least honest mistakes, and not the deliberate misstatement of facts, from which Australia has so often suffered. Oi course, there are numberless phases of life out here which I have never even touched: my nose has been too close to the grindstone, while life has resolved itself for the most part into a mere struggle for existence. Still, that very struggle has brought me into touch with real people, and with the many grades of society which are to be found here as elsewhere, in spite of all the theories of democracy. Book In Old Australia

Download or read book In Old Australia written by James S. Hassall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Old Australia: Records and Reminiscences From 1794 Many of my friends have suggested, at various times, that a few reminiscences of my early days would be acceptable to those who are interested in Australian life and manners of that period. In complying with their request, I may state, I have no intention of giving a history of the early days, but will content myself, in the first place, with a simple narration of those scenes and events of my early childhood which will shew how different the state of the colony of New South South Wales was at that time, and pass on to give the reader an account of events of interest that have occurred in my own time, in Australia, and also relate accounts of various incidents that I have received from my parents and others touching the earliest times. Few of those who have made this vast country their adopted home have heard much of the earlier life, employments, and undertakings of those pioneers who occupied the narrow limits of its first settlements. They have too often been led to conclude that the settlement comprised chiefly iron gangs and assigned servants, ruled by the lash under cruel and tyrannical masters and overseers, and was infested by bushrangers and other outlaws. My object in these scattered narratives will be simply to shew that the homes and lives of the early settlers were, in many cases, conducive to the prosperity and happiness of both masters and convict servants, which have resulted in the advancement of the people who now comprise the Common wealth of Australia.
