Book excerpt: Energetic electromagnetic radiation finds frequent uses in science (e. g. , for expe riments in nuclear and elementary - particle physics), in technology (for materials testing), and in medicine (for medical X-rays). The most common method of genera ting such radiation is via the process of "bremsstrahlung" (a German term coined by A. Sommerfeld, meaning "braking radiation") in which a beam of electrons is direc ted into matter (e. g. , a metal target), losing energy during its collisions with the atoms and releasing this energy in the form of emitted radiation. The character of such radiation may be drastically changed by the use of a tar get with periodic structure (most commonly, a crystal target). The coherent waves emitted from individual crystal atoms interfere with each other, monochromatizing and polarizing the radiation and often increasing its intensity manifold, thereby creating a powerful radiation source of high quality for purposes of scientific and technical applications. This is true both for the well - established "coherent bremsstrahlung" process in which the interfering radiation is emitted while the electrons cross a succession of crystal planes, as well as for the more recently discovered process of "channeling radiation" (generating radiation of even higher intensity, but lower energy) in which the radiation is emitted while the electrons propagate along a crystal plane, or a crystal axis, in an oscillatory fashion.

Book excerpt: In recent years, there has been considerable renewed interest in the development of novel devices for the production of high power coherent electromagnetic radiation. This interest has been motivated largely by the realization that, with existing technology, certain processes utilizing relativistic electron beams can produce coherent electromagnetic radiation at power levels far in excess of those achieved by conventional electron devices. This paper will review the current status of this rapidly developing field, with emphasis on two generic devices. The major thrust in the recent development of electron beam driven radiation sources has been directed towards achieving shorter wavelengths, greater power and higher efficiencies. Shortly after the development of such successful sources as the magnetron, kylstron and various traveling wave devices, it became clear that, in their original form, they were limited in their ability to produce high levels of radiation efficiently at short wavelengths. To circumvent the inherent limitations of these conventional coherent radiation sources, many new concepts and mechanisms, as well as variations on conventional concepts, were proposed. This paper is concerned primarily with two devices which are, relatively speaking, newcomers to the list of coherent classical radiation sources. They are the free electron laser and the cyclotron resonance maser (CRM); one well known type of CRM is the gyrotron.

Book excerpt: The development of coherent radiation sources for sub-angstrom wavelengths - i.e. in the hard X-ray and gamma-ray range - is a challenging goal of modern physics. The availability of such sources will have many applications in basic science, technology and medicine and in particular, they may have a revolutionary impact on nuclear and solid state physics, as well as on the life sciences. The present state-of-the-art lasers are capable of emitting electromagnetic radiation from the infrared to the ultraviolet, while free electron lasers (X-FELs) are now entering the soft X-ray region. Moving further, i.e. into the hard X and/or gamma ray band, however, is not possible without new approaches and technologies. In this book we introduce and discuss one such novel approach -the radiation formed in a Crystalline Undulator - whereby electromagnetic radiation is generated by a bunch of ultra-relativistic particles channeling through a periodically bent crystalline structure. Under certain conditions, such a device can emit intensive spontaneous monochromatic radiation and even reach the coherence of laser light sources. Readers will be presented with the underlying fundamental physics and be familiarized with the theoretical, experimental and technological advances made during the last one and a half decades in exploring the various features of investigations into crystalline undulators. This research draws upon knowledge from many research fields - such as materials science, beam physics, the physics of radiation, solid state physics and acoustics, to name but a few. Accordingly, much care has been taken by the authors to make the book as self-contained as possible in this respect, so as to also provide a useful introduction to this emerging field to a broad readership of researchers and scientist with various backgrounds. Since the coherent scattering is proportional to N2, where N is the number of electrons, and the incoherent scattering is proportional to N, also a modest degree of coherence can substantially increase the X-Ray yield. The theory of laser-electron beam scattering is reviewed and compared with the emission of radiation by an electron beam in an undulator. Examples of the practical implementation of an intense source of coherent X-Rays are discussed.

Book excerpt: The physics of coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) emitted by ultra-relativistic electron bunches, known since the last century, has become increasingly important with the development of high peak current free electron lasers and shorter bunch lengths in storage rings. Coherent radiation can be described as a low frequency part of the familiar synchrotron radiation in bending magnets. As this part is independent of the electron energy, the fields of different electrons of a short bunch can be in phase and the total power of the radiation will be quadratic with the number of electrons. Naturally the frequency spectrum of the longitudinal electron distribution in a bunch is of the same importance as the overall electron bunch length. The interest in the utilization of high power radiation from the terahertz and far infrared region in the field of chemical, physical and biological processes has led synchrotron radiation facilities to pay more attention to the production of coherent radiation. Several laboratories have proposed the construction of a facility wholly dedicated to terahertz production using the coherent radiation in bending magnets initiated by the longitudinal instabilities in the ring. Existing synchrotron radiation facilities also consider such a possibility among their future plans. There is a beautiful introduction to CSR in the 'ICFA Beam Dynamics Newsletter' N 35 (Editor C. Biscari). In this paper we recall the basic properties of CSR from the theory and what new effects, we can get from the precise simulations of the coherent radiation using numerical solutions of Maxwell's equations. In particular, transverse variation of the particle energy loss in a bunch, discovered in these simulations, explains the slice emittance growth in bending magnets of the bunch compressors and transverse de-coherence in undulators. CSR may play same the role as the effect of quantum fluctuations of synchrotron radiation in damping rings. It can limit the minimum achievable emittance in the synchrotron light sources for short bunches.

Book excerpt: The x-ray free-electron laser has established itself as the brightest available source of x-rays, extending the coherence and brilliance properties of conventional atomic lasers down to the sub-Angstrom level. The high-brightness electron beams that are used to drive the free-electron laser process, undergo a number of collective instabilities that can generate complex phase-space structures and induce the emission of coherent radiation, an effect that is generally termed microbunching instability. The main subject of this dissertation is the collective evolution of beam mi- crobunching under the effect of longitudinal space-charge forces. We develop a three-dimensional kinetic theory of space-charge effects leading to collective suppression and amplification of beam microbunching. This model gives, for the first time, a fully self-consistent description of the space-charge instability, with the inclusion of three-dimensional and thermal effects. After establishing a self-consistent theoretical foundation for space-charge effects, we present two experiments related to the space-charge instability. The generation of broad- band coherent undulator radiation with a longitudinal space-charge amplifier is demonstrated experimentally for the first time. This experiment extends the capabilities of free-electron laser facilities by allowing the generation of coherent broadband radiation pulses, thus accessing regimes of operation currently unavailable for fourth generation light sources. Finally a coherent diffraction imaging technique for the reconstruction of beam microbunching is designed and experimentally tested. This technique is based on the application of an oversampling phase-retrieval method to the far-field coherent transition radiation emitted by a microbunched electron beam and has applications in the diagnostic of compressed electron beams and free-electron lasers. While the microbunching instability is generally regarded as a detrimental effect, this work shows that the coherent effects associated with the induced microbunching can be optimized and used to our advantage for the development of new coherent radiation sources and advanced beam diagnostics.

Book excerpt: Free electron lasers based on stimulated scattering from relativistic electron beams show potential for a new class of coherent radiation sources ranging from millimeter wavelengths down to optical wavelengths and beyond which are characterized by continuous tunability, very high power levels and competitive efficiencies. Here we present a comprehensive fully-relativistic treatment of stimulated backscattering from an electron beam with streaming velocity beta(sub zo)c. The incident pump wave is taken to be a static, circularly polarized, periodic magnetic field with wavenumber K sub O; the frequency of the scattered radiation is beta(sub zo) ck(sub O)/1-beta(sub zo). The analysis is linear in the scattered wave fields, but contains the pump field to all orders. The physical mechanism of the backscattering is provided by the v X B ponderomotive forces acting on the beam electrons in the presence of both the pump and the scattered waves. This force produces a longitudinal charge bunching which in turn gives rise to source currents for the scattered waves.
