Book excerpt: This is Robert Corfe's third book on the socio-economic philosophy of New Socialism. Book excerpt: How can sincere support be given wholly to a political party unless it has clear principles underpinning its base? Such a question is of particular relevance when asked of the Labour party in view of the events which have shattered the foundations of socialism worldwide over the past decade. The author, who has considerable practical experience as a Labour party activist, sets out to re-establish the concept of socialism as a vision for the future. But the forward-looking views of New Socialism need to be very different from the old. The transformation of society over the past 60 years means that old doctrines have to be replaced by new if socialism is to be made attractive to the modern man or woman.

Download or read book Freedom From America written by Robert Corfe and published by Arena books. This book was released on 2006-01-16 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anti-Americanism has now become an imperative for the sanity and stability of the world. Over the past 30 years almost every foreign adventure of the US has led to failure in compounding existing problems, and after the withdrawal of her forces, conditions have been left worse than when she intervened. Added to that is the resistance of her government to recognise the reality of global warming, and most recently, blundering policies have instigated a series of unexpected terrorist outrages on innocent victims which have made the world a more dangerous place. There are many justifications for anti-Americanism, but there is one which rises about all others: viz., a financial-industrial system which clashes with the long traditions of the social democracies in Europe and the Far East. Two incompatible capitalist systems have emerged amongst the advanced industrial economies in the post-War period: the Rentier capitalism of the US, and the Productive capitalism of Europe and the Far East. Each is guided by its own ideology, the Neo-liberalism of America versus the social democracy (a broad term transcending party politics) of Europe and the Far East Tiger economies. With America emerging as the clear victor of the Cold War in 1989, her government and corporations have been sufficiently confident to impose their financial-industrial system on the rest of the world, and this is proving disastrous to the social democratic consensus and welfare polices built up since 1945 and before. The argument is propagated that the European is no longer viable, and must therefore surrender to the American way and globalisation, but this is shown to be a fiction invented by US policy makers. There is an in-depth analysis of American culture which explains its political system, and the US is revealed to be very far from a true democracy. It is in Europe and elsewhere where the ideals of democracy, justice and equity are best promoted. The final chapters home-in on a European resolution to the most difficult problems of our time, viz., the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; and how to de-fuse the causes of Terror. The book is an appeal for the cause of civilisation, social justice and equity for all humanity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This in-depth study of local government in Mexico raises issues which go far beyond the territory it covers. It will be of absorbing interest to all students of local democracy and participatory methods, not only in Latin America, but in Western and Eastern Europe, the USA, Africa, Asia, and elsewhere, where initiatives and experimentation are driven by socio-economic change. Everywhere citizen participation has become an important part of the democratisation debate, and this is certainly the situation in contemporary Mexico. This book presents a revealing insight of the wide range of participatory mechanisms, including plebiscites, referenda and neighbourhood committees, which have been introduced by different political parties at the local level in Mexico. After presenting the overall picture, the author examines the implementation of the participatory agenda in three localities:

Download or read book Revival Why is there no Socialism in the United States 1976 written by W Sombart and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is the United States the only advanced capitalist country with no labor party? This question is one of the great enduring puzzles of American political development, and it lies at the heart of a fundamental debate about the nature of American society. Tackling this debate head-on, Robin Archer puts forward a new explanation for why there is no American labor party-an explanation that suggests that much of the conventional wisdom about "American exceptionalism" is untenable. Conventional explanations rely on comparison with Europe. Archer challenges these explanations by comparing the United States with its most similar New World counterpart-Australia. This comparison is particularly revealing, not only because the United States and Australia share many fundamental historical, political, and social characteristics, but also because Australian unions established a labor party in the late nineteenth century, just when American unions, against a common backdrop of industrial defeat and depression, came closest to doing something similar. Archer examines each of the factors that could help explain the American outcome, and his systematic comparison yields unexpected conclusions. He argues that prosperity, democracy, liberalism, and racial hostility often promoted the very changes they are said to have obstructed. And he shows that it was not these characteristics that left the United States without a labor party, but, rather, the powerful impact of repression, religion, and political sectarianism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The argument of this book is addressed to those who desire to order their daily lives, in the homme, in the shop, in the factory, or on the farm, in conformity with the highest ethical standards, or in more familiar words, to live according to the will of God; and to them only. They constitute, I hope, a large proportion of mankind but be that as it ma, I know that there are at present among them many who are sorely perplexed in mind, and gravely disturbed in conscience, by the apparent contradiction between the precepts of ethics and the laws of economics. It is my earnest hope that in this book they mind some help towards the solution of their difficulties

This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume offers many interesting hints on which the reader may have cause to reflect. Tiziana Foresti, History of Economic Ideas With the restoration of laissez faire as the governing principle of contemporary economic ideology and policy making, Thorstein Veblen s insights are once again timely. This book revisits his legacy, featuring original essays by renowned Veblen scholars. The contributors review and comment upon the subjects that concerned Veblen such as: the legal system, finance and capital, the operation of markets, neoclassical economics, private property, cultural and economic change, the place of science, and higher education. They consider how his evolutionary theory of the economy and society can continue to inform our understanding of our modern world. As an astute and highly capable observer, Veblen shed light on our present system through a re-examination of a similar system. Students and scholars of economics will find this provocative book of great interest. It will also be a refreshing discussion for those frustrated by the gap between the rosy scenarios of conventional economics and the problems of inequality, conspicuous consumption, concentrated economic power and unresponsive government.
Download or read book The Revival of Private Enterprise in China written by Shunfeng Song and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-24 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The re-emergence of private enterprises is one of the most important factors in China's recent economic development. They will play a key role in maintaining China's high growth rate and honouring its commitments to the WTO. Despite this they face obstacles to growth, including borrowing restrictions, high taxes, ineffective legal protection and lack of technical and information support. The authors in this book discuss these obstacles and propose measures for improving private enterprise development. They consider how private enterprises can help China mitigate its macroeconomic problems, such as unemployment, income inequality, financial disintermediation and cyclical boom and bust. Finally they examine the lessons to be learnt from other countries in promoting privatization.
Download or read book Changemakers written by Adam Arvidsson and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that, as industrial capitalism enters a period of prolonged crisis, a new paradigm of ‘industrious modernity’ is emerging. Based on small-scale, commons-based and market-oriented entrepreneurship, this industrious modernity is being pioneered by the many outcasts that no longer find a place within a crumbling industrial modernity. This new industriousness draws on the new planetary commons that have been generated by the globalization of industrial capitalism itself. The outsourcing of material production to global supply chains has made the skills necessary to engage in commodity production generic and common, and the globalization of media culture and the internet have generated new knowledge commons. Together these new commons have radically reduced the capital requirements to engage in economic activity, and are providing new, highly efficient tools of productive organization at little cost. This timely analysis of the new forces of change in our societies today will be of great interest to anyone concerned with the impact of digital technologies and the future of capitalism.
