Book New Results for Rare Muon Decays

Download or read book New Results for Rare Muon Decays written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Branching-ratio limits obtained with the Crystal Box detector are presented for the rare muon decays ..mu.. ..-->.. eee, ..mu.. ..-->.. e..gamma.., and ..mu.. ..-->.. e..gamma gamma ... These decays, which violate the conservation of separate lepton-family numbers, are expected to occur in many extensions to the standard model. We found no candidates for the decay ..mu.. ..-->.. eee, yielding an upper limit for the branching ratio of B/sub ..mu..3e/ 3.1 x 10−11 (90% C.L.). A maximum-likelihood analysis of the ..mu.. ..--.. e..gamma.. candidates yields an upper limit of B/sub ..mu..e..gamma../ 4.9 x 10−11 and an analogous analysis of ..mu.. ..--.. e..gamma gamma.. candidates gives an upper limit of B/sub ..mu..e..gamma gamma../

Book Progress Report on Recent Rare Muon Decay Experiments at the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility

Download or read book Progress Report on Recent Rare Muon Decay Experiments at the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility written by and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A search has been performed for the decays .mu. .-->. eee, .mu. .-->. e.gamma., and .mu. .-->. e.gamma gamma. with a sensitivity in the branching ratios at the level of 10−1°. The experiment used a separated, 26 MeV/c .mu./sup +/ beam with an average intensity of 300kHz. A total of 2.2 x 1011 muon decays were examined for the present result. The detector for the experiment is the Crystal Box, which consists of a cylindrical drift chamber surrounded by 396 NaI(T1) crystals. A layer of scintillation counters in front of the crystals provided timing for electrons and veto for photons. The energy resolution for electrons and photons is approx. 6% (FWHM). The position resolution of the drift chamber is 350 .mu.m leading to a vertex cut with a rejection of 103 for .mu. .-->. eee. The timing resolution is approx. 300 ps the scintillators and approx. 1 ns from the crystals. No candidate for .mu. .-->. eee has been found, yielding an upper limit for the branching ratio of B/sub .mu. 3e/

Book Weak and Electromagnetic Interactions in Nuclei

Download or read book Weak and Electromagnetic Interactions in Nuclei written by Hans Volker Klapdor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear physics is presently experiencing a thrust towards fundamental phy sics questions. Low-energy experiments help in testing beyond today's stan dard models of particle physics. The search for finite neutrino masses and neutrino oscillations, for proton decay, rare and forbidden muon and pion de cays, for an electric dipole moment of the neutron denote some of the efforts to test today's theories of grand unification (GUTs, SUSYs, Superstrings, ... ) complementary to the search for new particles and symmetries in high-energy experiments. The close connections between the laws of microphysics, astrophysics and cosmology open further perspectives. This concerns, to mention some of them, properties of exotic nuclei and nuclear matter, and star evolution; the neutrino and the dark matter in the universe; relations between grand unification and evolution of the early universe. The International Symposium on Weak and Electromagnetic Interactions in Nuclei (W.E.LN. 1986)' held in Heidelberg 1-5 July 1986, in conjunction with the 600th anniversary of the University of Heidelberg, brought together experts in the fields of nuclear and particle physics, astrophysics and cosmol ogy.

Book Rare Kaon Muon and Pion Decay

Download or read book Rare Kaon Muon and Pion Decay written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author discusses the status of and prospects for the study of rare decays of kaons, muons, and pions. Studies of rare kaon decays are entering an interesting new phase wherein they can deliver important short-distance information. It should be possible to construct an alternative unitarity triangle to that determined in the B sector, and thus perform a critical check of the Standard Model by comparing the two. Rare muon decays are beginning to constrain supersymmetric models in a significant way, and future experiments should reach sensitivities which this kind of model must show effects, or become far less appealing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume comprises a collection of invited papers presented at the interna tional symposium "The Future of Muon Physics", May 7-9 1991, at the Ruprecht Karls-Universitat in Heidelberg. In the inspiring atmosphere of the Internationales Wissenschaftsforum researchers working worldwide at universities and at many inter national accelerator centers came together to review the present status of the field and to discuss the future directions in muon physics. The muon, charged lepton of the second generation, was first oberved some sixty years ago~ Despite many efforts since, the reason for its existence still remains a secret to the scientific community challenging both theorists and experimentalists. In modern physics the muon plays a key role in many topics of research. Atomic physics with negative muons provides excellent tests of the theory of quantum electrodynamics and of the electro-weak interaction and probes nuclear properties. The. purely leptonic hydrogen-like muonium atom allows tests of fun damental laws in physics and the determination of precise values for fundamental constants. New measurements of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon will probe the renormalizability of the weak interaction and will be sensitive to physics beyond the standard model. The muon decay is the most carefully studied weak process. Searches for rare decay modes of muons and for the conversion of muonium to antimuonium examine the lepton number conservation laws and new speculative theories. Nuclear muon capture addresses fundamental questions like tests of the CPT theorem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New experimental upper limits for the branching ratios of the lepton-family-number nonconserving decays .mu. .-->. e.gamma. and .mu.+ .-->. e+.gamma gamma. are presented. A new determination of .gamma., the ratio of pion axial-vector to vector form factors, from radiative pion decay is also reported. These results are from data taken with the Crystal Box detector at LAMPF.

Book excerpt: Since its discovery in cosmic rays, the muon has played an important role in our understanding of nature. Muons are fundamental subatomic particle 207 times heavier than an electron. Accelerators and cosmic-ray collisions produce muons, but the particles quickly decay. That makes muons rare in nature. Muons possess a quantum mechanical property called spin, analogous to the twirling of a top. Because of this trait, muons behave like tiny bar magnets. Their spin also makes them into minute gyroscopes, responding to upward or downward forces by swinging the axes of spin around horizontally. The muon provides a rich variety of applications in diverse areas of science, including condensed matter physics and chemistry. High energy physicists are seriously considering the design and construction of a muon collider. Negatively misbehaving muons bolster earlier evidence of new physics beyond the standard model. Important international leading-edge research results are presented in this volume.

Book excerpt: Improved searches for rare processes in muon decay have substantially improved existing limits, but no evidence for any non-standard behavior has been found. The result of a recent sensitive search for right-handed currents indicates that the ratio (V + A)-amplitude/(V - A)-amplitude less than or equal to 0.029. This experiment also imposed new limits on non-standard couplings and on the energy scales where lepton substructure and family symmetry breaking effects might manifest themselves.
