Book excerpt: The osteology of over 160 species of fossil and Recent plectognath or tetradontiform fishes is described and illustrated in relation to the supposed phylogeny and proposed higher classification (subfamilial to ordinal levels) of this group of approximately 320 Recent species of primarily tropical and temperate forms of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans. The history of the classification and of the previous work on the osteology of the order is reviewed, while one new species (Acanthopleurus collettei, Oligocene of Canton Glarus, Switzerland) and one new genus (Eotetraodon, Eocene of Monte Bolca, Italy) are described. Comparative inclusive and exclusive definition are given for all higher categories based on both external and internal anatomical features. The Order Plectognathi (Tetraodontiformes) is divided into two suborders, the Sclerodermi or Balistoidei and the Gymnodontes or Tetraodontoidei, with a variety of other infraordinal and superfamilial categories, and 10 families, with subfamilial groupings in 4 of the latter.

The Symposium was organized by the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) and the Marine Productivity section of the International Biological Programme (IBPIPM) with the assistance of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the International Association of Biological Oceanography (IABO). The aim of the Symposium was to summarize present knowledge of the biology of the Indian Ocean. Twenty-two presentations by invited speakers reviewed the research work carried out during the International Indian Ocean Expedition (lIOE) 1959 -1965, the first cooperative project coordinated by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC). In addition, reports were presented of postexpedition examination of material and of more recent investigations relevant to the aims of the lIOE. In keeping with the aims of "Ecological Studies", the present volume contains much new information and some synthesis, all directed towards obtaining an understanding of the functioning and organization of the ecosystem of the Indian Ocean. The plan of the Symposium was to present the relevant meteorological, physical, chemical and geological background and to follow this with the various aspects of biological oceanography. Because of the uneven stage of development of the different disciplines, the papers included in this volume vary in their analytical level.

Book excerpt: The Triacanthoidea is one of 7 superfamilial groupings presently envisioned for the Plectognathi, an order of primarily marine fishes derived of a percoid ancestry during the Eocene. The approximately 320 recent species of plectognaths, of which 26 are triacanthoids, are notable for a high degree of diversity in structure & way of life. The great diversity that is evident between the families of plectognaths also is seen within some families, but not in others. In the case of the triacanthoids, the deep water Triacanthodidae range from relatively normal species through intermediates to weirdly specialized forms with extremely long tubular snouts, while, in comparison, the shallow water Triacanthoidae are of rather uniform configuration.
