Book Coenzyme Q in Aging

    Book Details:
  • Author : Guillermo López Lluch
  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2020-08-06
  • ISBN : 3030456420
  • Pages : 367 pages

Download or read book Coenzyme Q in Aging written by Guillermo López Lluch and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-06 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive exploration of research on the essential relationship of the coenzyme Q10 and the process of aging in living organisms. CoQ10 is an important factor in two main aspects of cell physiology: bioenergetics and antioxidant protection. While primary deficiency of CoQ10 is associated with severe and lethal disease, secondary deficiency can be associated with the progression of mitochondrial dysfunction linked to the lessening of biological activities during aging. The book is organized in four sections. The first offers an overview of the function of CoQ10, highlighting the two main functions of CoQ10 in cells: its essential role as electron transport chain member in mitochondria, and the protection of cell membranes against oxidation as one of the main endogenous-synthesized antioxidants. The second section covers research on Coenzyme 10. Topics include studies involving invertebrate models, mammal studies and the influence of CoQ on longevity. Also covered is research involving the role of CoQ in senescence-accelerated mice. Section three examines the effects of reduced CoQ in human aging, as evident in mitochondrial dysfunction, metabolic syndrome, neurodegenerative disorders, immunosenescence and fertility and reproduction. The final section, Prolongevity effectors and Coenzyme Q, explores research into slowing or stopping the aging process. Coverage includes strategies including calorie restriction, and modulation of CoQ10 levels by induction of synthesis or by supplementation. Coenzyme Q in Aging benefits a broad readership of researchers, clinicians, educators and students interested in the biochemical and physiological effects of coenzyme Q and the importance of this molecule in aging process.

Book Science Essentials High School Level

Download or read book Science Essentials High School Level written by Mark J. Handwerker and published by Jossey-Bass. This book was released on 2004-12-08 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science Essentials High School Level gives classroom teachers and science specialists a dynamic and progressive way to meet curriculum standards and competencies. Science Essentials are also available from Jossey-Bass publishers at the elementary school and middle school levels. You'll find the lessons and activities at each level actively engage students in learning about the natural and technological world in which we live by encouraging them to use their senses and intuitive abilities on the road to discovery. They were developed and tested by professional science teachers who sought to give students enjoyable learning experiences while preparing them for district and statewide proficiency exams. For easy use, the lesson and activities at the High School Level are printed on a big 81/2" x 11" lay-flat format that folds flat for photocopying of over 107 student activity sheets, and are organized into two sections: I. BIOLOGY (60 Lessons) Addresses the following topics: Fundamental Life Process, Single and Multicellular Organisms, Phenotypes, DNA/RNA, Genetics, Ecosystems, Internal Environments, Bacteria, and Viruses. II. CHEMISTRY (47 Lessons) Includes information about: Periodic Table of Elements, Properties of Matter, and Kinetic Molecular Theory. Each section offers detailed lessons with reproducible activity sheets for teaching basic concepts and skills in one main area of science at this level. Each lesson includes: The Basic Principle underlying the lesson and accompanying student activity The specific science Competency students will demonstrate A list of Materials needed to complete the activity An easy-to-follow, illustrated Procedure for presenting the lesson and accompanying student activity handout Observations & Analysis describing the desired results and answers to the student activity A two-page, illustrated Student Handout with step-by-step directions for carrying out the activity and recording observations and conclusions The lessons in each section are followed by sample test items focusing on the concepts and skills emphasized in that section. These will help students prepare for the types of questions they will be asked in actual test situations and are followed by answer keys. All three grade level volumes—elementary, middle school, and high school—give you stimulating and effective ways to help students master basic science content and prepare to demonstrate their knowledge at the particular level.

Download or read book Life Span Extension written by Christian Sell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-07-27 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, remarkable discoveries have been made concerning the underlying mechanisms of aging. In Life-Span Extension: Single-Cell Organisms to Man, the editors bring together a range of illuminating perspectives from researchers investigating the aging process in a variety of species. This novel work addresses the aging process in species ranging from yeast to man and, among other subjects, features detailed discussions of the naked mole-rat, an exceptionally long-lived rodent; the relationship between dietary factors/food restriction and aging; and an evolutionary view of the human aging process. Single mutations that extend life span have been identified in yeast, worms, flies, and mice, whereas studies in humans have identified potentially important markers for successful aging. At the same time, it has been discovered that the genes and pathways identified in these studies involve a surprisingly small set of conserved functions, most of which have been the focus of aging research for some time. For example, the mTOR pathway, a regulator of translation and protein synthesis, has been identified as a common longevity pathway in yeast and Caenorhabditis elegans. In mammals, this pathway intersects with neuroendocrine pathways and with the insulin/insulin-like growth factor pathways, which have been identified as major modulators of life span and aging in both invertebrates and mice. Novel, emerging technologies and the increasingly wide variety of systems that are now used to study aging and the mechanisms of aging provide enormous opportunities for the identification of common pathways that modulate longevity. It is these common pathways that are the focus of this important volume.
