Book Scenario Development

Download or read book Scenario Development written by Birgit Boldt and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2004-01-10 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2003 in the subject Business economics - Offline Marketing and Online Marketing, grade: Good, Kiel University of Applied Sciences (Economics), course: Strategic Marketing, language: English, abstract: There are many different methodologies for assessing the future environment of an enterprise. But it is quite difficult to anticipate the future development successfully. Three examples illustrate this problem: • “In 1943 Thomas Watson, who was then chairman of IBM, forecast a world market for about five computers. • In 1970, Ken Olsen, founder of Digital Equipment Corporation, said no one needed to have a personal computer at home. (Of interest is that Ken ́s company was purchased by Compaq - one of the leaders in home computers). • In 1981, Microsoft ́s founder Bill Gates said that 640K would be enough memory for anyone. (Microsoft was also slow to take advantage of the early Internet - releasing Internet Explorer in August 1995, well after Netscape Navigator, which had taken a dominant lead in the early browser market.)” These examples show that it can have disadvantageous consequences to rely on one apparently safe forecast. Scenario planning is a technique that allows to operate in planning with more than one possible future. This treatise describes the very interesting methodology of scenario development and demonstrates how to use it in an eight step procedure. Concluding, it shows how the oil company Shell had a remarkable success in the 1970s by using scenario planning and gives an assessment of this remarkable technique.

Book Shaping the Future

Download or read book Shaping the Future written by Ian Pownall and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scenario analysis requires the integration of a diversity of concepts, views, data, and practices for organizations. It is an analysis that draws upon current understanding of organizational and environmental contexts but also one that reflects creativity in the construction of future scenarios within which organizations could compete. This case study explores the application of scenario analysis using the "Field Anomaly Relaxation" technique by a group of regional stakeholders to understand and prioritize emergent futures in a U.K. seaside town. The discussion is focused on two phases of that research project: the series of stakeholder meetings to prioritize emergent futures and the factors shaping them, and final analytical and interpretive phase that generated four distinctive scenarios which were used to frame ongoing strategic planning by local and regional organizations.

Download or read book Uncertainty by Design written by Limor Samimian-Darash and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2022-04-15 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Uncertainty by Design Limor Samimian-Darash presents cases of the use of scenario technology in the fields of security and emergency preparedness, energy, and health by analyzing scenario narratives and practices at the National Emergency Management Authority in Israel, the World Health Organization's Regional Office for Europe, and the World Energy Council. Humankind has long struggled with the uncertainty of the future, with how to foresee the future, imagine alternatives, or prepare for and guard against undesirable eventualities. Scenario—or scenario planning—emerged in recent decades to become a widespread means through which states, large corporations, and local organizations imagine and prepare for the future. The scenario technology cases examined in Uncertainty by Design provide a useful lens through which to view contemporary efforts to engage in an overall journey of discovering the future, along with the modality of governing involved in these endeavors to face future uncertainties. Collectively, they enable us to understand in depth how scenarios express a new governing modality.
