Book excerpt: The discovery of nongravitational interactions between dark matter and the Standard Model would be an important step in unraveling the nature of dark matter. If such an interaction exists, it would have profound implications on how dark matter is produced in both the early universe and in collider experiments. In addition, it would also allow dark matter to deposit energy into Standard Model particles in unexpected ways. This thesis details some recent progress made in understanding these implications, including (i) a new freezeout mechanism for thermal dark matter dominated by a 3-to-2 process within a vector portal dark sector model; (ii) a study of how the existence of dark sector bound states can influence collider, direct and indirect searches for dark matter; (iii) a new axion dark matter interferometric search using a cavity that is sensitive to the axion-induced rotation of linearly polarized light; (iv) a definitive assessment of the potential contribution of dark matter annihilation and decay to cosmic reionization; (v) new constraints on dark matter annihilation rates and decay lifetimes from 21-cm cosmology, and (vi) a new numerical code, DarkHistory, which significantly improves the computation of the ionization and thermal histories of the universe in the presence of exotic sources of energy injection. These novel ideas span length scales ranging from table-top experiments to the entire cosmos, and represent just a few of the myriad of ways in which dark matter may yet surprise us.

Book excerpt: The Standard Model of Particle Physics has been verified to unprecedented precision in the last few decades. However there are still phenomena in nature which cannot be explained, and as such new theories will be required. Since terrestrial experiments are limited in both the energy and precision that can be probed, new methods are required to search for signs of physics beyond the Standard Model. In this dissertation, I demonstrate how these theories can be probed by searching for remnants of their effects in the early Universe. In particular I focus on three possible extensions of the Standard Model: the addition of massive neutral particles as dark matter, the addition of charged massive particles, and the existence of higher dimensions. For each new model, I review the existing experimental bounds and the potential for discovering new physics in the next generation of experiments. For dark matter, I introduce six simple models which I have developed, and which involve a minimum amount of new physics, as well as reviewing one existing model of dark matter. For each model I calculate the latest constraints from astrophysics experiments, nuclear recoil experiments, and collider experiments. I also provide motivations for studying sub-GeV mass dark matter, and propose the possibility of searching for light WIMPs in the decay of B-mesons and other heavy particles. For charged massive relics, I introduce and review the recently proposed model of catalyzed Big Bang nucleosynthesis. In particular I review the production of Li6 by this mechanism, and calculate the abundance of Li7 after destruction of Be7 by charged relics. The result is that for certain natural relics CBBN is capable of removing tensions between the predicted and observed Li6 and Li7 abundances which are present in the standard model of BBN. For extra dimensions, I review the constraints on the ADD model from both astrophysics and collider experiments. I then calculate the constraints on this model from.

Book excerpt: Several of the very foundations of the cosmological standard model — the baryon asymmetry of the universe, dark matter, and the origin of the hot big bang itself — still call for an explanation from the perspective of fundamental physics. This work advocates one intriguing possibility for a consistent cosmology that fills in the theoretical gaps while being fully in accordance with the observational data. At very high energies, the universe might have been in a false vacuum state that preserved B-L, the difference between the baryon number B and the lepton number L as a local symmetry. In this state, the universe experienced a stage of hybrid inflation that only ended when the false vacuum became unstable and decayed, in the course of a waterfall transition, into a phase with spontaneously broken B-L symmetry. This B-L Phase Transition was accompanied by tachyonic preheating that transferred almost the entire energy of the false vacuum into a gas of B-L Higgs bosons, which in turn decayed into heavy Majorana neutrinos. Eventually, these neutrinos decayed into massless radiation, thereby producing the entropy of the hot big bang, generating the baryon asymmetry of the universe via the leptogenesis mechanism and setting the stage for the production of dark matter. Next to a variety of conceptual novelties and phenomenological predictions, the main achievement of the thesis is hence the fascinating notion that the leading role in the first act of our universe might have actually been played by neutrinos.

In particular, the book provides explanations of the latest perplexing astrophysical observations of the anomalous absorption of the 21 cm spectral line from the early Universe, as well as of the recent puzzling observational results by the Dark Energy Survey team, who found that the distribution of dark matter is smoother than predicted by Einstein's general relativity. The book presents an overview of dark matter theories from the viewpoint of the Occam razor principle. The book presents also an alternative explanation for the era of the decelerating expansion of the Universe and the era of the accelerated expansion of the Universe - without resorting to dark energy or without introducing new gravitational degrees of freedom. The book presents analytical results on the trajectory of an interstellar interloper in the vicinity of a binary star - the results enabling to determine parameters of the interloper from observations. The fundamental importance of these results is due to the fact that our solar system has been recently visited by two interstellar interlopers: Oumuamua and 2I/Borisov. Further, the book presents advances in understanding mechanisms of stellar flares. By the analysis of the observations, it is shown that flare stars are the most favorable object for studying nonthermal physical phenomena in the visible range. Next, the book presents new results related to white dwarfs. White dwarfs are characterized by very strong magnetic fields: from 100 to 100000 Tesla. In these very strong magnetic fields, electrons in the atmospheric plasmas of white dwarfs move along helical trajectories. It is shown that the neglect of this effect leads to the overestimation of the electron density, deduced from the observed widths of Balmer lines, by several times. In view of these results, it is clear that there is required a very significant revision of the electron density deduced from all observations of hydrogen lines in white dwarfs. Finally, the book presents various types of the astrophysical evidence pointing to the existence of a parallel universe. Totally different kinds of astrophysical observations demonstrated that in our universe there exists a preferred direction. It is shown that there could be a parallel universe in this direction, both the parallel universe and our universe rotating about their barycenter.

It is with Dark Matter, the combined interrelated topics of galaxy formation and the generation of large scale structure that we see a confrontation of the exotic ideas from the early universe, such as phase transitions and unification, coming face to face with the realities of traditional observational cosmology. These realities have recently been heightened by the tremendous number of new observations, demonstrating that large scale structure of the universe is far more complex than anybody had suspected. In particular, we now see large scale foam, apparent large scale velocity fields, indicating devations from the Hubble flow, large scales of the order 100 Mpc, and galaxy formation occurring at high red shifts much greater than unity. We also see an apparent correlation of clusters of galaxies that may even exceed the c- relation of galaxies despite their being on much larger scales with lower average densities.

Book excerpt: The notion of macroscopic dark matter, made up of multiple constituent particles, providesan intriguing possibility to explain the nature of dark matter. In this thesis, we present theoretical models, formation mechanisms in the early universe, and experimental search strategies for macroscopic dark matter. For the model aspect, we explore two examples: the electroweak symmetric dark monopole, in which the Higgs-portal interaction alters the electroweak vacuum within the monopole, and primordial black holes of both magnetically charged and uncharged types. While both uncharged black holes and magnetic black holes undergo Hawking evaporation, for the latter, the presence of hairy electroweak-symmetric coronas accelerates the Hawking evaporation, making the magnetic black holes extremal. For the formation mechanism, we propose a new production method for monopoles through parametric resonance. We demonstrate that dark monopoles with a radius up to one micron and a mass of up to ten kilotons could account for all dark matter. To search for macroscopic dark matter objects, we find that monopoles with electroweak-symmetric cores generate multi-hit signatures and deposit significant energy in large-volume neutrino detectors, such as the IceCube neutrino detector, which can probe dark matter masses up to one gram. For uncharged primordial black holes, we update constraints from Hawking evaporation using observations of gamma-ray emissions and identify new targets for future exploration. We also discuss potential detection signatures for extremal magnetic black holes.
