Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Map of Asia: 1900 1919 This afternoon I saw two German delegates, followed by a long line of plenipotentiaries of the allied and associated powers, sign the Treaty of Versailles. The ceremony in the Hall of Mirrors, to which the world has been looking forward eagerly since the armistice of November 11, thrilled neither participants nor spectators. Cannon were booming to announce the end of the war and the birth of the League of Nations. But the war was not ended. The League of Nations was not born. The signers knew that the document over which they bent was not the chart of a durable world peace. That is why they were indifferent. Their apathy was communicated to us who looked on. The futility of the Treaty of Versailles is due to three causes. In its first articles, it creates a league of nations, the possibility of the existence of which is taken away by the stipulations of the rest of the treaty. Book 1900 Map of Southeast Asian Including China Laos Cambodia Vietnam and Thailand

Download or read book 1900 Map of Southeast Asian Including China Laos Cambodia Vietnam and Thailand written by Poetose Press and published by Poetose Notebooks. This book was released on 2019-09-06 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cover of this beautiful 4" x 6" 50-page notebook features a gorgeous 1900 map of southeast Asia including China, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Thailand (formerly Annam and Siam). Here is some of the theory behind the beauty and potential of a blank page: "A person can get lost trying to find a home in herself--but then you simply begin to go on as one must go on, and maybe you say a little something to yourself every once in a while just to practice being with words, meeting silence, meeting yourself again, and maybe you frequent empty rooms to familiarize yourself with the meaning of space as in a blank page, and yourself in it, and maybe you scribble like this will help you come home to yourself, but eventually you fit things together, and what made no sense finds its way into something plausible by virtue of its sheer existence."

Book Mapping the Great Game

Download or read book Mapping the Great Game written by Riaz Dean and published by Casemate. This book was released on 2020-01-19 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work of explorers, surveyors and spies in the race to conquer Southern Asia is vividly recounted in this history of British imperial cartography. In the 19th century, the British and Russian empires were engaged in bitter rivalry for the acquisition of Southern Asian. Although India was the ultimate prize, most of the intrigue and action took place along its northern frontier in Afghanistan, Turkestan and Tibet. Mapping the region and gaining knowledge of the enemy were crucial to the interests of both sides. The Great Trigonometrical Survey of India began in the 18th century with the aim of creating a detailed map of the subcontinent. Under the leadership of George Everest—whose name was later bestowed to the world’s tallest mountain—the it mapped the Great Arc running from the country’s southern tip to the Himalayas. Much of the work was done by Indian explorers known as Pundits. They were the first to reveal the mysteries of the forbidden city of Lhasa, and discover the true course of Tibet’s mighty Tsangpo River. These explorers performed essential information gathering for the British Empire and filled in large portions of the map of Asia. Their adventurous exploits are vividly recounted in Mapping the Great Game.
