Book Egyptian Light and Hebrew Fire

Download or read book Egyptian Light and Hebrew Fire written by Karl W. Luckert and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1991-11-01 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Egyptian Light and Hebrew Fire focuses on the cosmology of ancient Egypt and on derived traditions. The book outlines how the ancient Egyptian world view affected Hebrew religion, Greek philosophy, Neoplatonism, Gnosticism, and early Christianity. It traces ideological roots of Western civilization back to its earliest known prototypes in the Pyramid and Coffin texts of ancient Egypt. It challenges us to refocus some of our history of early Greek philosophy, and it positively identifies Neoplatonism as a philosophized and scarcely disguised neo-Egyptian theology.

Book A Best Selling Hebrew Book of the Modern Era

Download or read book A Best Selling Hebrew Book of the Modern Era written by David B. Ruderman and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2015-02-17 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1797, in what is now the Czech Republic, Pin as Hurwitz published one of the best-selling Hebrew books of the modern era. Nominally an extended commentary on a sixteenth-century kabbalist text, The Book of the Covenant was in fact a compendium of scientific knowledge and a manual of moral behavior. Its popularity stemmed from its ability to present the scientific advances and moral cosmopolitanism of its day in the context of Jewish legal and mystical tradition. Describing the latest developments in science and philosophy in the sacred language of Hebrew, Hurwitz argued that an intellectual understanding of the cosmos was not at odds with but actually key to achieving spiritual attainment. In A Best-Selling Hebrew Book of the Modern Era, David B. Ruderman offers a literary and intellectual history of Hurwitzs book and its legacy. Hurwitz not only wrote the book, but was instrumental in selling it as well and his success ultimately led to the publication of more than forty editions in Hebrew, Ladino, and Yiddish. Ruderman provides a multidimensional picture of the book and the intellectual tradition it helped to inaugurate. Complicating accounts that consider modern Jewish thought to be the product of a radical break from a religious, mystical past, Ruderman shows how, instead, a complex continuity shaped Jewish societys confrontation with modernity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rediscovery of Enochic Judaism as an ancient movement of dissent within Second Temple Judaism, a movement centered on neither temple nor torah, is a major achievement of contemporary research. After being marginalized, ancient Enoch texts have reemerged as a significant component of the Dead Sea Scrolls library unearthed at Qumran. Enoch and Qumran Origins is the first comprehensive treatment of the complex and forgotten relations between the Qumran community and the Jewish group behind the pseudepigraphal literature of Enoch. The contributors demonstrate that the roots of the Qumran community are to be found in the tradition of the Enoch group rather than that of the Jerusalem priesthood. Framed by Gabriele Boccaccini's introduction and James Charlesworth's conclusion, this book examines the hypotheses of five particularly eminent scholars, resulting in an engaging and substantive discussion among forty-seven specialists from nine countries. The exceptional array of essays from leading international scholars in Second Temple Judaism and Christian origins makes Enoch and Qumran Origins a sine qua non for serious students of this period. Book Biblical Genesis A new light on the origins of man and the original sin

Download or read book Biblical Genesis A new light on the origins of man and the original sin written by Don Guido Bortoluzzi and published by Associazione Don Guido Bortoluzzi. This book was released on 2017-02-02 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fr. Guido Bortoluzzi was born in 1907 and died in 1991 in the province of Belluno (N.E. Italy). Between 1968 and 1974 he received from the Lord eight revelations which concerned the origins of the Earth and of Man. He was a man without malice, and because of this it was granted him to see episodes that would normally make one feel awkward, if not embarrassed, but thanks to Fr. Guido's candour, they are related without trace of morbidity. This inner attitude of Fr. Guido permitted the Lord to deal with difficult subjects frankly and without circumlocutions. As is the way with the Lord, He chose as His witness a candid, unprejudiced soul, whose heart trusted in God's Love. The contrast between the simplicity of the 'means' and the greatness of the message makes it evident that the source of the contents cannot be but from God. The Lord chose neither a theologian, nor a scientist, because - as it is written in the Gospel - it is not possible to put new wine in old wineskins (i.e. in someone who is already self-sufficient and content with his own theories) without both of them being lost.

Book The Hebrew Book in Early Modern Italy

Download or read book The Hebrew Book in Early Modern Italy written by Joseph R. Hacker and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2011-08-19 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of printing had major effects on culture and society in the early modern period, and the presence of this new technology—and the relatively rapid embrace of it among early modern Jews—certainly had an effect on many aspects of Jewish culture. One major change that print seems to have brought to the Jewish communities of Christian Europe, particularly in Italy, was greater interaction between Jews and Christians in the production and dissemination of books. Starting in the early sixteenth century, the locus of production for Jewish books in many places in Italy was in Christian-owned print shops, with Jews and Christians collaborating on the editorial and technical processes of book production. As this Jewish-Christian collaboration often took place under conditions of control by Christians (for example, the involvement of Christian typesetters and printers, expurgation and censorship of Hebrew texts, and state control of Hebrew printing), its study opens up an important set of questions about the role that Christians played in shaping Jewish culture. Presenting new research by an international group of scholars, this book represents a step toward a fuller understanding of Jewish book history. Individual essays focus on a range of issues related to the production and dissemination of Hebrew books as well as their audiences. Topics include the activities of scribes and printers, the creation of new types of literature and the transformation of canonical works in the era of print, the external and internal censorship of Hebrew books, and the reading interests of Jews. An introduction summarizes the state of scholarship in the field and offers an overview of the transition from manuscript to print in this period.

Book Legends of Babylon and Egypt in Relation to Hebrew Tradition

Download or read book Legends of Babylon and Egypt in Relation to Hebrew Tradition written by Leonard W. King and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interconnected influences of different traditions of ancient mythology on one another consumed the archaeological efforts of the late 19th and early 20th century, though much work in Britain and Europe was interrupted by the outbreak of World War I. This fascinating 1918 study-adapted from a series of lectures delivered to the British Academy in 1916 rings with the frustration of its British author. A renowned classical scholar, King incorporates the then latest research from American academics into his intriguing analysis of the impact of Babylonian and Egyptian mythology on the foundations of Judaism. Drawing on newly discovered five-thousand-year-old texts, he weaves a narrative of the folklore of human origins unbroken from our earliest collective memories. His comparison of the creation and deluge stories from a range of ancient Old World civilizations remains compelling today. British classical scholar LEONARD W. KING (1869-1919) was Assistant Keeper of Egyptian and Assyrian Antiquities at the British Museum and professor of Assyrian and Babylonian archaeology at the University of London, King's College. He also wrote Babylonian Magic and Sorcery (1896) and A History of Sumer and Akkad (1910).
