This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Police auditing merits the attention of both practitioners and academicians for two primary reasons. First, police auditing meets the need of police administrators to know about the economy, efficiency, and effectiveness of their organization and operations. Second, it provides an important mechanism for the public and its elected officials to fulfill their oversight responsibilities. This book provides a comprehensive examination of theories, standards, procedures, applications, and evaluations of police audits to allow the reader to obtain a detailed understanding of different aspects and types of police audits and apply the principles of auditing and data collection to various police programs. The book is readable for different audiences as it provides a review of police auditing along with discussions of planned change and incorporates standards and procedures in police auditing into social scientific research process and methods. The book is aimed at three types of readers. First, it provides police executives and managers with a timely and necessary understanding of police auditing as they conduct budget reviews and organizational diagnoses. Second, it serves as a valuable source of information for auditors and researchers who are either charged with the responsibility to perform police audits directly or engaged in evaluating audited police programs. Third, students in criminal justice programs will benefit from this book in courses that address research methods and police accountability issues.

Book excerpt: Have newcomers to American cities been responsible for a disproportionate amount of violent crime? Dangerous Strangers takes up this question by examining the incidence of criminal violence among several waves of immigrant/ethnic groups in San Francisco over 150 years. By looking at a variety of groups - Irish, German, Italian, and Chinese immigrants, primarily - and their different experiences at varying times in the city's history, this study addresses the issue of how much violence can be attributed to new groups' treatment by the host society and how much can be traced to traits found in their community of origin. Dangerous Strangers fills an acknowledged gap in the literature of homicide studies and broadens our understanding of newcomer violence.

Book Purgatory Citizenship

Download or read book Purgatory Citizenship written by Calvin John Smiley and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-05-16 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reentry after release from incarceration is often presented as a story of redemption. Unfortunately, this is not the reality. Those being released must navigate the reentry process with diminished legal rights and amplified social stigmas, in a journey that is often confusing, complex, and precarious. Making use of life-history interviews, focus groups, and ethnographic fieldwork with low-income urban residents of color, primarily Black men, Calvin John Smiley finds that reentry requires the recently released to negotiate a web of disjointed and often contradictory systems that serve as an extension of the carceral system. No longer behind bars but not fully free, the recently released navigate a state of limbo that deprives them of opportunity and support while leaving them locked in a cycle of perpetual punishment. Warning of the dangers of reformist efforts that only serve to further entrench carceral systems, Purgatory Citizenship advocates for abolitionist solutions rooted in the visions of the people most affected.
