Book excerpt: Telework Towards the Elusive Office Ursula Huws, Werner B. Korte and Simon Robinson for Empirica Since the early seventies the concept of telework has been popularised and sensationalised by futurologists and the media. Usually, but not always, portrayed idealistically, telework continues to be a subject of interest to both the practitioner and the academic world. By examining and interpreting the results of three major European surveys, this book moves away from the journalistic approach of earlier work and demonstrates a thorough understanding of the present reality of telework and it's likely future. In addition it draws on a wealth of empirical evidence to present a critical, objective and rigorous analysis of the economic, social and legal faces of telework from the perspectives of the individual worker and the policy analyst as well as the organizational manager. Early predictions may have been simplistic and overstated, but managers and workers cannot afford to ignore the implications of a technology which is becoming both cheaper and more widely available. The office is ceasing to be a fixed geographical space and becoming instead a web of relationships held together by telecommunication networks. Although full-time homeworking may never become a reality for the majority of people, we are moving into the era of the elusive office and few jobs will be entirely unaffected. For all those interested in telework—employers, employees, consultants, managers, computer professionals, as well as academics and researchers—this book will provide essential reading. Reviews of the hardback edition ‘… a valuable and comprehensive addition to the debate on future patterns of work.’ Computer Bulletin ‘… a detailed and studious book. It tackles the subject from all angles—the organisation and management of telework, the legal aspects, the economics and how it feels for the teleworkers.’ Telecom World

Book Perspectives on Workplace Communication and Well Being in Hybrid Work Environments

Download or read book Perspectives on Workplace Communication and Well Being in Hybrid Work Environments written by Alexandre Duarte and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The world is facing the Covid-19 pandemic for over two years now. Daily life changed dramatically, and social distancing and remote working has become the "new normal". Several countries, as is the case of Portugal, underwent multiple lockdown periods during which many work activities became hybrid or completely remote. Research about how people are facing these challenges, conducted in different geographies, point to common findings and concerns. First, the pandemic has enhanced inequalities regarding income, access to digital technology, learning, working and even wellbeing and affection. Second, the pandemic has taken a toll on the mental health of many people, with anxiety and depression being the most common consequences. Finally, the use of digital technologies, for fun, for learning, for social relations but also for working has increased significantly. In addition, after the first lockdown, many people didn't fully go back to their pre-pandemic routines, having maintained a more frequent and intense use of digital technologies, which has been reinforced by a second period of lockdown and remote working. At the same time, many workers are suffering from "digital fatigue" and struggle to self-regulate their life/work balance, as the permanent digital connection to work is reinforced and they struggle with blurred borders concerning privacy, leisure, or rest. In this context, it is vital to research about how organizations reinvented themselves to cope with the Covid-19 pandemic and understanding which of the reactive workplace communication practices and improvised solutions were considered advantageous and persisted in a post-pandemic setting. In addition, it is relevant to understand the perspective of the workers and to assess how these changes in their workplace (physical and/or virtual) communication (both formal and informal) impacted their wellbeing. This book aims, therefore, to realize how workers are coping with these new workplace communication practices, the advantages and disadvantages of these changes, emergent needs, and how organizations can reinvent themselves in order to promote the wellbeing and happiness of their members"--

Book The Cambridge Handbook of Technology and Employee Behavior

Download or read book The Cambridge Handbook of Technology and Employee Behavior written by Richard N. Landers and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-02-14 with total page 1435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experts from across all industrial-organizational (IO) psychology describe how increasingly rapid technological change has affected the field. In each chapter, authors describe how this has altered the meaning of IO research within a particular subdomain and what steps must be taken to avoid IO research from becoming obsolete. This Handbook presents a forward-looking review of IO psychology's understanding of both workplace technology and how technology is used in IO research methods. Using interdisciplinary perspectives to further this understanding and serving as a focal text from which this research will grow, it tackles three main questions facing the field. First, how has technology affected IO psychological theory and practice to date? Second, given the current trends in both research and practice, could IO psychological theories be rendered obsolete? Third, what are the highest priorities for both research and practice to ensure IO psychology remains appropriately engaged with technology moving forward?

Book New Ways of Organizing Work

Download or read book New Ways of Organizing Work written by Clare Kelliher and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-10-06 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Ways of Organizing Work offers a broader understanding of changes to the way work is organized and the implications for relevant stakeholders. It brings together contributions from a well established group of international scholars to examine the nature and consequences of new ways of working. The book draws on studies of a variety of new forms of work, involving a diverse range of employees and drawing on experiences in a variety of countries. It includes three main empirical sections. The first focuses on different forms of work and working arrangements, stimulated by the use of technology, increased competitive pressure and media portrayal of work and working. In contrast to much other work in the field, a strong theme of this book is individuals’ experiences of new ways of working. The second empirical section examines this theme with a specific focus on remote workers and their responses to new ways of working. Exploring contemporary trends towards increasing use of global teams, the third section examines the implications of distributed teams and the challenges for managing performance and knowledge transfer.
