Book Neutrinos and Implications for Physics Beyond the Standard Model

Download or read book Neutrinos and Implications for Physics Beyond the Standard Model written by Robert Schrock and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2003 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important book presents the proceedings of the conference ?Neutrinos and Implications for Physics Beyond the Standard Model?, put on by the Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics, State University of New York at Stony Brook. The observation of neutrino masses and lepton mixing constitutes the first confirmed evidence for physics beyond the Standard Model. This evidence includes the measured deficiency of charged current reactions induced by solar neutrinos and the anomalous zenith angle distribution of atmospheric neutrinos. A profound question now facing theorists is: What do these observations imply for new physics? At the conference, members of the major experiments gave an update on current experimental evidence from solar and atmospheric neutrino data for neutrino oscillations, and status reports from KamLAND and MiniBooNE. Leading theorists also reported on neutrinoless double beta decay, high energy neutrino scattering and precision electroweak data, theoretical models for neutrino masses and lepton mixing, and constraints from neutrino data, etc. Since neutrino physics is at present one of the most exciting areas of particle physics, this volume should be of interest to a wide variety of students and researchers in physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Muon plays an important role in elementary particle, nuclear and atomic physics. Muon was discovered in 1936 in cosmic radiation. At present, it is very important in the framework of the Standard Model. With the discovery of a charm quantum number, muon and the accompanying muon neutrino play an important role in the quark-lepton model of elementary particles being combined in the second generation of the Standard Model. Muonic processes provide important information on the low energy limit of the weak interaction. This book describes the various aspects of muon physics, taking into account the most recent experiments conducted.

Book Supersymmetric Lepton Flavor Violation at the NLC

Download or read book Supersymmetric Lepton Flavor Violation at the NLC written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supersymmetric theories generally have new flavor violation sources in the squark and slepton mass matrices. If significant lepton flavor violation exists, selectron and smuon should be nearly degenerate. This leads to the phenomenon of slepton oscillations, which is analogous to neutrino oscillations, if sleptons are produced at the Next Linear Collider. The direct slepton production at the Next Linear Collider provides a much more powerful probe of lepton flavor violation than the current bounds from rare processes, such as[mu][r-arrow] e[gamma]. 4 refs., 1 fig.

The main technical challenges involve construction of very intense proton beams, targeting, effective capture of produced particles, cooling and subsequent acceleration of the resulting muons.

Book Identifying Muons for Neutrino Oscillation and Cross Section Experiments

Download or read book Identifying Muons for Neutrino Oscillation and Cross Section Experiments written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutrinos ($\nu$) are interesting for many reasons; they are the only fundamental fermions which are electrically neutral; their mass is orders of magnitude smaller than the lightest charged lepton, the electron; and their solely weak interactions make them an excellent probe of the weak nuclear force. However, one of the most interesting aspects of neutrinos is that, unlike their charged lepton partners, neutrino mass and flavor eigenstates are not the same. All leptons possess 'lepton flavor', a property which is conserved in neutrino interactions. However, because of the difference in the mass and weak eigenstates of neutrinos, a quantum-interference effect is seen in the time evolution of neutrinos. This results in energy and distance dependent oscillations of the neutrino's lepton flavor called 'neutrino oscillations'. The MINOS experiment (Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search) was designed to measure the neutrino oscillation parameters, $\Delta m2̂_{32}$ and $sin2̂(2\theta_{32})$. MINOS is composed of two detectors located on a 'beam' of v[subscript mu]s. The MINOS Near Detector is located at Fermilab, and the Far Detector is located at the Soudan Mine in Minnesota, 734 km after the Near Detector. The MINER$\nu$A experiment (Main Injector Neutrino Experiment for $\nu$ - A) is a neutrino experiment placed directly in front of the MINOS Near Detector. MINER$\nu$s goal is to make precision measurements of neutrino cross sections. This will help with uncertainties in oscillation measurements, such as MINOS' at low energy. Although lepton flavor is conserved in neutrino interactions, the final state lepton can be a charged lepton ('charged current' interactions) or a neutrino ('neutral current' interactions) of a particular flavor. The identification of charged current $\nu_\mu$ interactions through the identification of a muon in the final state is a critical component to both neutrino oscillation and cross section measurements; neutral current events are a background to the oscillation signal bec! ause the properties of the incoming neutrino cannot be determined. Such identification is particularly difficult and important for low-energy neutrino events. In this thesis, we will discuss improvements to the MINOS charged current identification at low energies, studies to estimate the effect of the neutral current background on the measurement of the oscillation parameters, and the aspects of muon identification which are similar for the MINOS and MINER$\nu$A experiments. In 2010, the MINOS experiment released a measurement of the oscillation parameters based on $7.32x10{̂20}$ POT. The results were $\Delta m2̂_{32} = 2.32{̂+.012}_{-0.08} x 103̂ eV2̂$, and $sin2̂(2\theta_{32}) > 0.90(90%,C.L.)$. This is the best measurement of the oscillation parameter, $\Delta m2̂_{32}$, and a competitive measurement of $sin2̂(2\theta_{32})$. The improvements to the charged current event selection helped MINOS observe a complete oscillation in neutrino energy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The President's FY 2003 Budget Request for the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the Major Research Equipment and Facilities Construction Account called for a National Research Council (NRC) review of the scientific merits of IceCube and other proposed U.S. neutrino projects in the context of current and proposed capabilities throughout the world. The NRC committee-the Neutrino Facilities Assessment Committee (NFAC)-was charged with providing scientific assessments of two possible future science initiatives: (1) IceCube, a very large volume detector of high-energy neutrinos proposed for the South Pole and (2) a possible deep underground science facility to be developed in the United States to pursue a broad range of fundamental questions in physics and astronomy. Fourteen persons were appointed to the committee, and the first meeting was held in June 2002, with delivery of the final report expected within 6 months. The committee's assessment was to be performed in the context of current and planned neutrino capabilities throughout the world. Specifically, the study was to address the unique capabilities of each class of new experiment and any possible redundancy between the two types of facility.

Book Particle Physics CP Violation in Hyperon Decays

Download or read book Particle Physics CP Violation in Hyperon Decays written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary research activities under this grant were in E871 (HyperCP) at Fermilab, a search for CP violation in hyperon decays which completed data taking in January, 2000. HyperCP is an experiment designed to perform a sensitive search for direct CP violation in the decays of cascade ([Xi]) and[Lambda] hyperons by looking for an asymmetry between particle and antiparticle decay parameters. The experiment is expected to achieve a sensitivity[approx]10[sup -4] in the decay parameters. Standard model predictions for this CP-violating asymmetry range from 0.3 to 5 x 10[sup -4]. A difference between the decay parameters for particle and antiparticle is direct evidence that CP symmetry is violated. A non-zero asymmetry would be the first evidence for CP violation outside of the K[sup o] system. Recent results from KTeV indicate a direct CP violation in K[sup o] decays, which suggests that CP violation will appear in other decays. In addition, we will look at a number of rare hyperon decays involving muons. These probe important new physics topics such as Majorana neutrinos and lepton number violating processes. The latter are of great current interest because new evidence for neutrino oscillations indicate lepton flavor violation does occur. Our data will lead to an improvement in the limits on branching ratios for these processes typically by three to four orders-of-magnitude. The muon detector construction and data resulting from it have been the responsibility of the Michigan group. We are now leading the analysis of the rare muon-related decay modes, and were responsible for the muon system and beam monitor upgrades for the 1999 run.

Book B Decays

  • Author : Sheldon Stone
  • Publisher : World Scientific
  • Release : 1994
  • ISBN : 9789810218973
  • Pages : 676 pages

Download or read book B Decays written by Sheldon Stone and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1994 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2nd edition is an extensive update of "B Decays?. The revisions are necessary because of the extensive amount of new data and new theoretical ideas. This book reviews what is known about b-quark decays and also looks at what can be learned in the future. The importance of this research area is increasing, as evidenced by the approval of the luminosity upgrade for CESR and the asymmetric B factories at SLAC and KEK, and the possibility of experiments at hadron colliders. The key experimental observations made thus far, measurement of the lifetimes of the different B species, B0-B0 mixing, the discovery of ?Penguin? mediated decays, and the extraction of the CKM matrix elements Vub and Vcb from semileptonic decays, as well as more mundane results, are described in great detail by the experimentalists who have been closely involved with making the measurements. Theoretical progress in understanding b-quark decays using HQET and lattice gauge techniques are described by theorists who have developed and used these techniques.Synthesizing the experimental and theoretical information, several articles discuss the implications for the ?Standard Model? and how further tests can be done using measurements of CP violation in the B system.
