Book Experiments in International Benchmarking of US Research Fields

Download or read book Experiments in International Benchmarking of US Research Fields written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-02-28 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can the federal government gauge the overall health of scientific researchâ€"as a whole and in its partsâ€"and determine whether national funding adequately supports national research objectives? It is feasible to monitor US performance with field-by-field peer assessments. This might be done through the establishment of independent panels consisting of researchers who work in a field, individuals who work in closely related fields, and research "users" who follow the field closely. Some of these individuals should be outstanding foreign scientists in the field being examined. This technique of comparative international assessments is also known as international benchmarking. Experiments in International Benchmarking of U.S. Research Fields evaluates the feasibility and utility of the benchmarking technique. In order to do this, the report internationally benchmarks three fields: mathematics, immunology, and materials science and engineering, then summarizes the results of these experiments.

Book New Immunology Research Developments

Download or read book New Immunology Research Developments written by Roldolfo Delmonte and published by . This book was released on 2008-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on new research advances in the field of immunology which is the study of the body's protection from foreign macromolecules or invading organisms and the responses to them. These invaders include viruses, bacteria, protozoa or even larger parasites. In addition, immune responses are developed against our own proteins (and other molecules) in autoimmunity and against our own aberrant cells in tumour immunity. The first lines of Defence against foreign organisms are barrier tissues such as the skin that stop the entry of organism into our bodies. A second line of defence is the specific or adaptive immune system which may take days to respond to a primary invasion (that is infection by an organism that has not hitherto been seen).

Book Cancer and Autoimmunity

Download or read book Cancer and Autoimmunity written by M.E. Gershwin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2000-03-27 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the two disciplines in parallel development for two decades, tumor immunology and transplantation immunology, the latter has thrived and has led to some of the most critical discoveries in immunobiology. The former continues to thwart both scientists and clinicians alike. The goal of immunologists in modern day research is to develop a simple and effective means to manipulate cancer in vivo, possibly encompassing several venues: identifying a phenotypic marker and the use of either active or passive immunization; include the use of passive reagents carrying "warheads" to selectively destroy cancer cells; or altering the basic process of cell survival. This excellent multidiscipline-authored volume presents a theme which has not been well described before. The papers include both basic and clinical science and range from sophisticated molecular biology to little more than phenomenology (e.g. the increased association of cancer in some autoimmune diseases and increased presentation of autoimmune phenomena in malignant condition). This, however, is state-of-the-art.This collection of themes will be of use not only to bench scientists, but also to clinicians who treat patients. The book represents progress at the cutting edge of this discipline, and points the way to further developments in the "black box" of immunology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practical Immunology is a basic text aimed at immunology students and researchers at all levels who need a comprehensive overview of the methodology of immunology. The rapid and startling innovations in immunology over the past two decades have their root in sound experimental practice and it has always been the aim of this book to educate researchers in the design and performance of complex techniques. It will appeal to students of immunlogy, graduate students embarking on bench science, or specialised immunologists who need to use an immunological technique outside their sphere of expertise. The definitive lab "bench book". A one stop resource. Techniques explained from first principles. Basic forms of apparatus described in detail. Totally revised with new user friendly layout to aid use in the lab. Includes useful hints and tips.

Book Mental Immunity

    Book Details:
  • Author : Andy Norman
  • Publisher : HarperCollins
  • Release : 2021-05-18
  • ISBN : 0063003007
  • Pages : 262 pages

Download or read book Mental Immunity written by Andy Norman and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2021-05-18 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do people reject science and believe online conspiracy theories? How are people radicalized online and go on to commit acts of violence? Why is our society so politically polarized? Astonishingly irrational ideas are spreading. Covid denial persists in the face of overwhelming evidence. Anti-vaxxers compromise public health. Conspiracy thinking hijacks minds and incites mob violence. Toxic partisanship is cleaving nations, and climate denial has pushed our planet to the brink. Meanwhile, American Nazis march openly in the streets, and Flat Earth theory is back. What the heck is going on? Why is all this happening, and why now? More important, what can we do about it? In Mental Immunity, Andy Norman shows that these phenomena share a root cause. We live in a time when the so-called “right to your opinion” is thought to trump our responsibilities. The resulting ethos effectively compromises mental immune systems, allowing “mind parasites” to overrun them. Conspiracy theories, evidence-defying ideologies, garden-variety bad ideas: these are all species of mind parasite, and each of them employs clever strategies to circumvent mental immune systems. In fact, some of them compromise cultural immune systems – the things societies do to prevent bad ideas from spreading. Norman shows why all of this is more than mere analogy: minds and cultures really do have immune systems, and they really can break down. Fortunately, they can also be built up: strengthened against ideological corruption. He calls for a rigorous science of mental immune health – what he calls “cognitive immunology” – and explains how it could revolutionize our capacity for critical thinking. Hailed as “a feast for thought,” Mental Immunity melds cutting-edge work in science and philosophy into an “astonishingly enlightening and productive” solution to the signature problem of our age. A practical guide to spotting and removing bad ideas, a stirring call to transcend our petty tribalisms, and a serious bid to bring humanity to its senses.
