Book excerpt: "American Methodist Worship is the most comprehensive history of worship among John Wesley's various American spiritual descendents that has ever been written. It will be a foundational book for anyone who wishes to understand how American Methodists have worshipped."-Sacramental Life "This groundbreaking study will help to reshape the way that we think about early American Methodist worship and how it connects to more recent trends."-- The Journal of Religion "Karen Westerfield Tucker's exhaustive examination of the history of American Methodist worship may indeed launch a new genre in liturgical historiography: denominational liturgical histories. The genius of this contribution is its comprehensiveness in examining for the first time the worship life of an American ecclesiological tradition."--Doxology

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hymns and hymnbooks as American historical and cultural icons. This work is a study of the importance of Protestant hymns in defining America and American religion. It explores the underappreciated influence of hymns in shaping many spheres of personal and corporate life as well as the value of hymns for studying religious life. Distinguishing features of this volume are studies of the most popular hymns (“Amazing Grace,” “O, For a Thousand Tongues to Sing,” “All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name”), with attention to the ability of such hymns to reveal, as they are altered and adapted, shifts in American popular religion. The book also focuses attention on the role hymns play in changing attitudes about race, class, gender, economic life, politics, and society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication by John Wesley of the "Foundery" Collection (1742) marked the establishment of standards for tunes suited to Methodist hymn singing. Early Methodist hymn books in the United States contained words only, but they were cross-referenced with a leader's tune book, beginning with David's Companion (1808). "With One Heart and One Voice" reviews the trends surrounding the styles of tunes selected and analyzes the changes in shape and text for the most frequently used tunes in the Methodist Episcopal Church. Seventy six "core repertory" tunes are analyzed based upon their repeated appearances in most of the tune books published between 1808 and 1878, at which point Methodists finally obtained a hymnal with both words and music, after a half century of experimentation with tune selection. The conclusions reached in this work will allow scholars, hymnologists, and hymn singers to explore the social and musicological influences on hymn tune writing, how long it took for texts to acquire a "fixed tune," how tastes in hymn tunes change ever so slowly, and how many delightful tunes found in the core repertory of the 19th century have been dropped from today's repertoire.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive worship supplement that will fit many churches' needs for quality modern music resources, arranged seasonally and thematically. The 330 hymns and songs included represent many influential writers and styles including selections from Bernadette Farrell, John Bell, Stuart Townsend, Michael Forster, Graham Kendrick, Carl Daw, Taizé, Marty Haugen, Timothy Dudley-Smith, Shirley Erena-Murray, Keith Getty, Martin Leckebusch and many more. Designed to help churches broaden their repertoire substantially without the cost of replacing standard hymn books. Many standard hymn books in use today may seem old-fashioned, even those recently published. Keeping up to date is tricky since many new compositions may enjoy a brief spell of popularity, only to quickly drop out of use altogether! Here, an experienced team of UK church musicians and liturgists, representing a wide variety of tastes, has selected the very best of recently written hymns, songs and short chant compositions. Many of these selections have proven staying power and are widely used in both traditional and informal styles of worship, but often will not be found in other hymn books.
