Book New Horizons in the Neuroscience of Consciousness

Download or read book New Horizons in the Neuroscience of Consciousness written by Elaine K. Perry and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2010-10-28 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating cornucopia of new ideas, based on fundamentals of neurobiology, psychology, psychiatry and therapy, this book extends boundaries of current concepts of consciousness. Its eclectic mix will simulate and challenge not only neuroscientists and psychologists but entice others interested in exploring consciousness. Contributions from top researchers in consciousness and related fields project diverse ideas, focused mainly on conscious nonconscious interactions: 1. Paving the way for new research on basic scientific - physiological, pharmacological or neurochemical - mechanisms underpinning conscious experience (‘bottom up’ approach); 2. Providing directions on how psychological processes are involved in consciousness (‘top down’ approach); 3. Indicating how including consciousness could lead to new understanding of mental disorders such as schizophrenia, depression, dementia, and addiction; 4. More provocatively, but still based on scientific evidence, exploring consciousness beyond conventional boundaries, indicating the potential for radical new thinking or ‘quantum leaps’ in neuroscientific theories of consciousness. • Author : Edward Stein

  • ISBN : 019158472X
  • Pages : 310 pages

Download or read book Without Good Reason written by Edward Stein and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1996-01-11 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are humans rational? Various experiments performed over the last several decades have been interpreted as showing that humans are irrational—we make significant and consistent errors in logical reasoning, probabilistic reasoning, similarity judgements, and risk-assessment, to name a few areas. But can these experiments establish human irrationality, or is it a conceptual truth that humans must be rational, as various philosophers have argued? In this book, Edward Stein offers a clear critical account of this debate about rationality in philosophy and cognitive science. He discusses concepts of rationality—the pictures of rationality that the debate centres on—and assesses the empirical evidence used to argue that humans are irrational. He concludes that the question of human rationality must be answered not conceptually but empirically, using the full resources of an advanced cognitive science. Furthermore, he extends this conclusion to argue that empirical considerations are also relevant to the theory of knowledge—in other words, that epistemology should be naturalized.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Howard Gardner's brilliant conception of individual competence is changing the face of education today. In the ten years since the publication of his seminal Frames of Mind , thousands of educators, parents, and researchers have explored the practical implications of Multiple Intelligences (MI) theory—the powerful notion that there are separate human capacities, ranging from musical intelligence to the intelligence involved in understanding oneself. Multiple Intelligences: The Theory in Practice brings together previously published and original work by Gardner and his colleagues at Project Zero to provide a coherent picture of what we have learned about the educational applications of MI theory from projects in schools and formal research over the last decade.

Book Psychological Ownership and the Organizational Context

Download or read book Psychological Ownership and the Organizational Context written by Jon L. Pierce and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychological ownership as a phenomenon and construct attracts an increasing number of scholars in a variety of fields. This volume presents a comprehensive and up-to-date review of the psychological ownership literature with particular attention paid to the theory, research evidence, and comments on managerial applications. the authors address key elements that examine an employee's ownership feelings for his or her employing organization. the chapters address, among others, the following themes: the meaning of psychological ownership, the genesis of ownership feelings, the experiences and paths down which people travel that give rise to experiences of ownership, and the consequences (the personal and work outcomes) that stem from the sense of ownership. While the majority of the book is focused on feelings of ownership that exist at the individual-level, the authors introduce the construct of collective psychological ownership as well. This work acknowledges that teamwork has become increasingly commonplace in organizations and that like individuals, teams can come to a collective sense of ownership for a variety of targets within their work environment. the book closes by drawing upon the existing science of psychological ownership to provide a perspective on its applied (managerial) implications. This book will make a noteworthy addition to scholars' libraries: university libraries will also value it among their collections. Students of organizational psychology, management, organizational behavior, sociology and communication and their professors will find much of interest here.
