Book Appreciative Inquiry and Knowledge Management

Download or read book Appreciative Inquiry and Knowledge Management written by Tojo Joseph Thatchenkery and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ASKing (Appreciative Sharing of Knowledge) is at the heart of this comprehensive, compelling, and cutting edge guide to appreciative knowing and innovation. The authors have really managed to push the appreciative envelope here. They ve taken well-known appreciative inquiry frameworks and methods, effectively improved on them, and extended them into the all important area of knowledge development and knowledge sharing. I expect that readers in all kinds of organizations and at many levels will find the ASK system readily usable and effective. The in-depth case studies across a wide variety of industries (including government) turn the book into a fine guide for knowledge sharing, making it particularly easy to Learn how to ASK . At the same time, academics, teachers, and students will find this book does a terrific job of summarizing and enlivening the existing appreciative inquiry/intelligence literature. If you've only got time and money for one book on appreciative organizational approaches, this is the one to get. David Barry, Nova University, Lisbon, Portugal Thatchenkery and Chowdhry have given those of us challenged with global knowledge sharing a way through the muddle of the traditional knowledge management paradigm. Fusing Knowledge Sharing and Appreciative Sharing concepts leads to a true appreciation of the value of knowledge dissemination and away from knowledge hoarding. With new technology migration occurring at warp speed and globalization of product sourcing markets requiring co-location of manufacturing facilities close to the customer, our company relies on state of the art knowledge sharing capabilities to shorten conventional and expensive training methodologies. Positive team collaboration with representation from all international sites and across functional areas in effect, simultaneously managing time, distance, and culture barriers is substantially facilitated by thinking of knowledge sharing in new and appreciative ways. This book helps chart the new path. Hank Jonas, Organization Effectiveness Corning Incorporated The authors of this book advance the Appreciative Sharing of Knowledge (ASK), a unique approach by which organizations create a culture that facilitates the sharing of information. Using social constructionist approaches, historical data, and case studies, the authors demonstrate that appreciation or affirmation is the key ingredient for people to trust each other and overcome their inhibitions and concerns about sharing what they know. The hyper-competitive culture of many organizations has created a knowledge-hoarding climate that many firms struggle to change. The ASK process can reinvent, in a sustainable manner, how we think about organizing knowledge. By linking practices, artifacts, technologies and managerial skills, the ASK model offers a management framework for a wide range of enterprises. One of the basic tenets put forth is that if knowledge is shared appreciatively, managing knowledge will no longer be an issue. The authors expand on the concept of appreciation and illustrate how systems can be created to institutionalize knowledge sharing. In addition, they give examples of organizations that have planted the seeds for the exchange to happen. Academics and practitioners in the fields of knowledge management and organizational behavior and development will find this innovative study of great value. The findings will also be of great practical use for managers and executives in a variety of firms.

Book Investing in Information

Download or read book Investing in Information written by Andy Bytheway and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-28 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gathers together, in a new way, established and contemporary thinking about how to get the best out of information technology and information systems investments. Working managers who are beset by the complexities of information management in the age of Big Data and the Social Web, and students who are trying to make sense of information management in a chaotic world that is more and more driven by the Internet, will all benefit from this new treatment of a long-standing and problematic domain. Importantly, the book reveals and clarifies the dependencies that exist between the inner world of information technology and the outer world of people and organisations at work. The book differs from other books in its reflective approach. It avoids lengthy, descriptive, and prescriptive dogma. Rather, it provides tools for thinking about information management and it identifies strategic and tactical options at six levels: from the simple consideration of information technology and information systems, right through to issues of organisational performance and business strategy. At the heart of the matter are two critical and tightly connected issues: the ways that we conceive and manage an organisation’s processes, and the ways that we conceive and manage the information that an organisation needs to sustain those processes. The six-level framework that achieves this clarity is the “Information Management Body of Knowledge” (familiarly known as the “IMBOK”). This easy-to-understand and easy-to-remember framework has been found to be extremely useful in business, in government, in civil society and in education. Throughout the book, selected research papers are identified and summarised. There are also summary chapters from three different operational perspectives: performance and competency assessment using the IMBOK, undertaking research into related issues, and a review of parallel expert thinking. This book stands as a reference point and resource for all those who need to straddle the disparate worlds of “information technology” and “business”. It provides firm pedagogical foundations for courses dealing with business management in the information age, and it provides a sound reference framework for researchers who need to position research projects related to information technology and information systems in a wider context. For busy managers, who simply wish to identify, understand and successfully manage information technology-related opportunities, it provides an ideal arrangement of ideas and tools that will help them.

V. 2008 Exploration is mankind’s imperative. Since the beginnings of civilization, men and women have not been content to build a wall around their settlements and stay within its con nes. They explored the land around them, climbed the mountains, and scanned the horizons. The boldest among them pushed exploration to the most distant frontiers of the planet. As a result, much of the Earth was inhabited well before the days of the renowned European - th th plorers of the 15 and 16 centuries. Exploration did not cease, after the circumnavigation of the globe; it continued to the present. Today explorers are going in new directions, not just east and west, north and south. They explore backward in time and upward in space. Arc- ology explores the shorter time scales, and geochemistry the longer time scales of geophy- cal events: asteroidal and cometary collisions, magnetic reversals, continental formation and more. However, on Earth we cannot go back inde nitely, for much of the evidence of the very earliest days has been lost.

Book New Horizons in Research on Sustainable Organisations

Download or read book New Horizons in Research on Sustainable Organisations written by Mark Starik and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental sustainability practice and research have advanced over the past decade from novelty to near-mainstream status today. During this environmentally critical time period, sustainability practitioner techniques, such as environmental, energy and social auditing, other sustainability information and related systems, and a wide variety of environmental sustainability approaches have been developed, improved and institutionalised, advancing both the practice and research of environmental sustainability management and policy. However, academics and practitioners in the sustainability field still have widely differing perspectives on what a sustainable organisation is or might be, but seldom take the opportunity to share these respective sustainability visions, let alone the multiple ways to achieve them. New Horizons in Research on Sustainable Organisations is intended to bridge this gap between academics and practitioners with cutting-edge research from both groups on progress towards sustainability. After working on sustainability-related projects involving other academics, both research- and practitioner-oriented graduate students, consultants, managers and activists, the lead co-editors of this volume saw the need to encourage information exchanges among differing networks of sustainability stakeholders to create a pathway for researchers and practitioners in the general area of organisations and the natural environment to address issues of common interest. There are many networks in the general subject area, but the cross-pollination of ideas between academics and practitioners remains sketchy. New Horizons in Research on Sustainable Organisations is intended to present and encourage such cross-pollination. The chapters in this volume are presented in three subsets, generally proceeding from the most "macro" to the most "micro" in terms of perspective and applicability. However, this arbitrary division belies the integration from macro through meso (or mid-range) to micro levels that is apparent in these studies. Macro approaches typically include wider geographic scopes, greater numbers of stakeholders, and more complex explanatory factors than micro approaches. Each chapter adopts one or more particular sustainability world-view and then grounds these and the other chapter elements within actual organisations. Therefore, the reader is advised to envision not a one-dimensional continuum but rather a circle in which the macro view both feeds back and feeds forward to the micro view. This volume addresses a number of intriguing and important sustainable organisation phenomena such as multiple sustainable development perspectives, changing environmental politics, environmental management systems variations, voluntary environmental programme performance, complex adaptive systems, and environmental technology development. Additionally, several models are suggested, such as cultivation, capabilities and business ecology frameworks.
