Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Guide to Orange Culture We have been engaged in orange culture for the last ten years. During this time we have found it necessary to propagate nursery stock for our own use. The demand for our surplus stock has so increased that we now feel warranted in making this a special branch of our business. Florida is a growing State, and no branch of industry is attracting more attention than orange culture. A large amount of capital is being invested in this business, attracted no doubt by the large profits realized from bearing groves. The number of groves started in 1879 exceeded that of any previous year. A large portion of these trees died, or were irrecoverably stunted by unseasonable transplantation, improper soil, location, or management. This was largely owing to the ignorance of many respecting the peculiarities of our soil and climate, and the habits of semi-tropical fruit trees. To afford some reliable information among many conflicting statements we have added to our Catalogue a brief but comprehensive Guide To Orange Culture. We have avoided all doubtful points, and include only such facts as are generally accepted. To those who wish a more complete work on the subject, we have no hesitation in recommending the "Treatise and Hand Book on Orange Culture," by T. W. Moore, of Fruit Cove, Fla. The Citrus is our specialty; we endeavor to make our collection in this department as complete as possible. We have carefully studied the nomenclature and classification of this family of plants, which is perhaps more confused than any other cultivated fruit. All the varieties contained in the Descriptive Catalogue have been obtained from thoroughly reliable sources. We have visited the principal groves in the State, securing buds of the best native varieties from the original trees. Our leading varieties are propagated from bearing trees. Book Practical Orange Culture Including the Culture of the Orange Lemon Lime and Other Citrus Fruits as Grown in Florida Classic Reprint

Download or read book Practical Orange Culture Including the Culture of the Orange Lemon Lime and Other Citrus Fruits as Grown in Florida Classic Reprint written by A. H. Manville and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Orange Culture, Including the Culture of the Orange, Lemon, Lime and Other Citrus Fruits, as Grown in Florida Orange culture, like everything else in our busy modern world, is progressive. What a few years since was a chaos of conflicting opinions and practice has been reduced to something like system. The more successful growers throughout the State pursue essentially the same plan, modified to suit the peculiarities of soil, location, etc., with which they have to deal. The following pages are intended to be a practical guide to orange culture, according to the most approved methods. The profits and delights of orange culture do not come, strictly speaking, within the scope of this work, and they have been too often and too fully set before the public to need further mention here. The author has not attempted the history of the orange and its congeners any further than is involved in a descriptive list of the varieties known in Florida. The origination and introduction of the several species and varieties are treated at length in other accessible works, and though the subject is one of great interest, it has no practical bearing upon successful culture in this State. Bearing groves have been made in an incredibly short time by grafting or budding wild trees found in the State. These wild groves, few at most, have now almost or entirely disappeared, and methods for their development having no longer a general application have not been thought sufficiently pertinent for a place in these pages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Orange Culture in California For a number of years I have thought of putting my extensive practical experience in citrus culture into book form, and now, at the earnest request of numerous friends, I shall, for the benefit of those who are seeking information in semitropical fruit culture, proceed to carry my purpose into effect, hoping that this will be a profitable guide to this most interesting and remunerative industry. A residence of twenty-eight years in this State, the last sixteen of which have been devoted exclusively and uninterruptedly to semi-tropical orcharding and nursery business, enables me to write from a practical standpoint possessed by few. A lover by nature of the beautiful in horticulture, I have applied myself assiduously to assist in developing the latent interests of the business of citrus culture, by endeavoring to procure the best of the different species, by propagating and experimenting on a large scale, and carefully noting the different varieties. The field has been and still is wide and ample. However much I may have learned, I feel that we are only on the threshold of learning what are the most successful conditions for the profitable citrus culture of the future. I shall endeavor to present the subject in as brief a form as possible consistent with the many ramifications of the business, using no technical phrases, the object being to adapt the work to the understanding of all that may at any time be engaged in the business. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A look into the agricultural and culinary history of the American South and the challenges of its reclaiming farming and cooking traditions. Southern food is America’s quintessential cuisine. From creamy grits to simmering pots of beans and greens, we think we know how these classic foods should taste. Yet the southern food we eat today tastes almost nothing like the dishes our ancestors enjoyed, because the varied crops and livestock that originally defined this cuisine have largely disappeared. Now a growing movement of chefs and farmers is seeking to change that by recovering the rich flavor and diversity of southern food. At the center of that movement is historian David S. Shields, who has spent over a decade researching early American agricultural and cooking practices. In Southern Provisions, he reveals how the true ingredients of southern cooking have been all but forgotten and how the lessons of its current restoration and recultivation can be applied to other regional foodways. Shields’s turf is the southern Lowcountry, from the peanut patches of Wilmington, North Carolina to the sugarcane fields of the Georgia Sea Islands and the citrus groves of Amelia Island, Florida. He takes us on a historical excursion to this region, drawing connections among plants, farms, growers, seed brokers, vendors, cooks, and consumers over time. Shields begins by looking at how professional chefs during the nineteenth century set standards of taste that elevated southern cooking to the level of cuisine. He then turns to the role of food markets in creating demand for ingredients and enabling conversation between producers and preparers. Next, his focus shifts to the field, showing how the key ingredients—rice, sugarcane, sorghum, benne, cottonseed, peanuts, and citrus—emerged and went on to play a significant role in commerce and consumption. Shields concludes with a look at the challenges of reclaiming both farming and cooking traditions. From Carolina Gold rice to white flint corn, the ingredients of authentic southern cooking are returning to fields and dinner plates, and with Shields as our guide, we can satisfy our hunger both for the most flavorful regional dishes and their history. Praise for Southern Provisions “People are always asking me what the most important book written about southern food is. You are holding it in your hands.” —Sean Brock, executive chef, Husk “An impassioned history of the relationship between professional cooking, markets and planting in the American South which argues that true regionality is to be found not in dishes, but in ingredients.” —Times Literary Supplement

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How fluorescent orange symbolizes the uneven distribution of safety and risk in the neoliberal United States Safety Orange first emerged in the 1950s as a bureaucratic color standard in technical manuals and federal regulations in the United States. Today it is most visible in the contexts of terror, pandemic, and environmental alarm systems; traffic control; work safety; and mass incarceration. In recent decades, the color has become ubiquitous in American public life—a marker of the extreme poles of state oversight and abandonment, of capitalist excess and dereliction. Its unprecedented saturation encodes the tracking of those bodies, neighborhoods, and infrastructures judged as worthy of care—and those deemed dangerous and expendable. Here, Anna Watkins Fisher uses Safety Orange as an interpretive key for theorizing the uneven distribution of safety and care in twenty-first-century U.S. public life and for pondering what the color tells us about neoliberalism’s intensifying impact often hiding in plain sight in ordinary and commonplace phenomena.
