Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Grub Street: Large Print by George Gissing For many readers New Grub Street is Gissing's masterpiece. If this is not accepted, it remains beyond doubt one of his most interesting and most powerful novels. As a realistic picture of the literary in late Victorian England, New Grub Street has few rivals. There is much of Gissing himself, his idealism, pride, impracticality, in Edwin Reardon the study of the creative artist oppressed by poverty bears the stamp of bitter experience. Of the other characters, pedantic Alfred Yule, the humble scholar Biffen, ambitious and worldly Jasper Milvain are still recognizable literary types. New Grub Street is a sombre and moving story, cynical in its conclusions, but deriving from its close observation and deep integrity a lasting importance for students of character and period.

Book From Grub Street to Fleet Street

Download or read book From Grub Street to Fleet Street written by Bob Clarke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grub Street was a real place, a place of poverty and vice. It was also a metaphor for journalists and other writers of ephemeral publications and, by implication, the infant newspaper industry. During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, journalists were held in low regard, even by their fellow journalists who exchanged torrents of mutual abuse in the pages of their newspapers. But Grub Street's vitality and its battles with authority laid the foundations of modern Fleet Street. In this book, Bob Clarke examines the origination and development of the English newspaper from its early origin in the broadsides of the sixteenth century, through the burgeoning of the press during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, to its arrival as a respectable part of the establishment in the nineteenth century. Along the way this narrative is illuminated with stories of the characters who contributed to the growth of the English press in all its rich variety of forms, and how newspapers tailored their contents to particular audiences. As well as providing a detailed chronological history, the volume focuses on specific themes important to the development of the English newspaper. These include such issues as state censorship and struggles for the freedom of the press, the growth of advertising and its effect on editorial policy, the impact on editorial strategies of taxation policy, increased literacy rates and social changes, the rise of provincial newspapers and the birth of the Sunday paper and the popular press. The book also describes the content of newspapers, and includes numerous extracts and illustrations that vividly portray the way in which news was reported to provide a colourful picture of the social history of their times. Written in a lively and engaging manner, this volume will prove invaluable to anyone with an interest in English social history, print culture or journalism.

Scholarly, anxious Edwin Reardon had achieved a precarious career as the writer of serious fiction. On the strength of critical acclaim for his fourth novel, he has married the refined Amy Yule. But the brilliant future Amy expected has evaded her husband. The catastrophe of the Reardon's failing marriage is set among the rising and falling fortunes of novelists, journalists, and scholars who labour 'in the valley of the shadow of books'. George Gissing's New Grub Street was written at breakneck speed in the autumn of 1890 and is considered his best novel. Intensely autobiographical, it reflects the literary and cultural crisis in Britain at the end of the nineteenth century.

CHAPTER XXIX CATASTROPHE Marian had finished the rough draft of a paper on James Harrington, author of 'Oceana.' Her father went through it by the midnight lamp, and the next morning made his comments. A black sky and sooty rain strengthened his inclination to sit by the study fire and talk at large in a tone of flattering benignity. 'Those paragraphs on the Eota Club strike me as singularly happy, ' he said, tapping the manuscript with the mouthpiece of his pipe. 'Perhaps you might say a word or two more about Cyriac Skinner; one mustn't be too allusive with general readers, their ignorance is incredible. But there is so little to add to this paper--so little to alter--that I couldn't feel justified in sending it as my own work. I think it is altogether too good to appear anonymously. You must sign it, Marian, and have the credit that is due to you.' 'Oh, do you think it's worth while?' answered the girl, who was far from easy under this praise. Of late there had been too much of it; it made her regard her father with suspicions which increased her sense of trouble in keeping a momentous secret from him. 'Yes, yes; you had better sign it. I'll undertake there's no other girl of your age who could turn out such a piece of work. I think we may fairly say that your apprenticeship is at an end. Before long, ' he smiled anxiously, 'I may be counting upon you as a valued contributor. And that reminds me; would you be disposed to call with me on the Jedwoods at their house next Sunday?' Marian understood the intention that lay beneath this proposal. She saw that her father would not allow himself to seem discouraged by the silence she maintained on the great subject which awaited her decision. He was endeavouring gradually to involve her in his.

Book excerpt: In late-Victorian London, two writers of radically different temperaments pursue contrasting approaches to the literary life. The first, the talented and cerebral novelist Edwin Reardon, appears to be doomed by his idealistic nature to a life of impecuniousness, whereas the second, the driven but cynical journalist Jasper Milvain, continually reaps the material rewards of a career devoted to market-driven hack writing. When Reardon's intransigent sense of artistic integrity leads to the breakdown of his marriage, he begins to learn the true cost of his commitment to elevated principles and his refusal to pander to the demands of the marketplace, as the fates of the two rivals become ever more intertwined.Published in 1891, and described by Orwell as "Gissing's masterpiece", New Grub Street is a powerful, haunting exploration of the plight of the professional writer in a philistine age, and of the perennial dichotomy between literary merit and commercial success.

Book excerpt: Jasper Milvain is an ambitious young writer trying to establish himself as a journalist in London. During a stay with his mother and sisters in the country, he meets Alfred Yule, an experienced and disappointed man of letters, and his daughter, Marian, to whom Milvain finds himself troublingly attracted-troublingly because she is poor and because Milvain has already decided he must marry a woman who can help him in his career. With engaging frankness, Milvain explains to her his ideas about the importance of money in a literary life: It can buy the all-important first success as well as influential friends. London novelist Edwin Reardon has won modest success with his fourth novel. At this hopeful stage of his life, he also meets Amy Yule, a cousin of Marian, and falls in love with her. Under the impression that he will become a novelist of some distinction, Amy accepts his proposal of marriage. Now, the painfully scrupulous Edwin, who disdains the literary marketplace, finds that he can no longer write work with which he is satisfied; he also comes to realize that he suffers agony even in his attempt to produce marketable copy.

Excerpt: ... 241 CHAPTER XXII THE LEGATEES Each day Jasper came to inquire of his sisters if they had news from Wattleborough or from Marian Yule. He exhibited no impatience, spoke of the matter in a disinterested tone; still, he came daily. One afternoon he found Dora working alone. Maud, he was told, had gone to lunch at Mrs. Lane's. 'So soon again P She's getting very thick with those people. And why don't they ask you?' 'Maud has told them that I don't care to go out.' 'It's all very well, but she mustn't neglect her work. Did she write anything last night or this morning?' Dora bit the end of her pen, and shook her 'The invitation came about five o'clock, and it seemed to unsettle her.' 'Precisely. That's what I'm afraid of. She isn't the kind of girl to stick at work if people begin to send her invitations. But I tell you what it is, you must talk seriously to her; she has to get her living, you know. Mrs. Lane and her set are not likely to be much use, that's the worst of it; they'll merely waste her time, and make her discontented.' His sister executed an elaborate bit of crosshatching on some waste paper. Her lips were drawn together, and her brows wrinkled. At length she broke the silence by saying: * Marian hasn't been yet.' Jasper seemed to pay no attention; she looked up at him, and saw that he was in thought. 'Did you go to those people last night?' she inquired. 'Yes. By-the-by, Miss Eupert was there.' He spoke as if the name would be familiar to his hearer, but Dora seemed at a loss. 'Who is Miss Eupert?' 'Didn't I tell you about her? I thought I did. Oh, I met her first of all at Barlow's, just after we got back from the seaside. Bather an interesting girl. She's a daughter of Manton Rupert, the advertising agent. I want to get...
