Book An Examination of New Generation Cooperatives in the Upper Midwest

Download or read book An Examination of New Generation Cooperatives in the Upper Midwest written by Jasper Grashuis and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new organizational form, the new generation cooperative (NGC), emerged in the United States during the 1990s as farm producers came together to collectively add value to raw farm commodities. As compared to the traditional cooperative, the NGC facilitates a strong market orientation by defining membership and requiring high supply and equity capital commitments. Approximately 100 such value-added ventures formed during a period called 'cooperative fever', but public and producer interest dissipated in the 2000s. With secondary data collected from print media publications, we conclude that many of the original NGCs exited by means of bankruptcy or liquidation because of challenges common to most business organizations. However, other failures and conversions of large, successful NGCs also indicate an inherent equity and liquidity constraint, suggesting a limited ability of the organizational form to drive complex and capital-intensive value-added ventures. We conclude by raising possible conditions for the future viability of producer-owned business organizations in the value-added agri-food industry.

Book Cooperatives in New Orleans

Download or read book Cooperatives in New Orleans written by Anne Gessler and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2020-06-04 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cooperatives have been central to the development of New Orleans. Anne Gessler asserts that local cooperatives have reshaped its built environment by changing where people interact and with whom, helping them collapse social hierarchies and envision new political systems. Gessler tracks many neighborhood cooperatives, spanning from the 1890s to the present, whose alliances with union, consumer, and social justice activists animated successive generations of regional networks and stimulated urban growth in New Orleans. Studying alternative forms of social organization within the city’s multiple integrated spaces, women, people of color, and laborers blended neighborhood-based African, Caribbean, and European communal activism with international cooperative principles to democratize exploitative systems of consumption, production, and exchange. From utopian socialist workers’ unions and Rochdale grocery stores to black liberationist theater collectives and community gardens, these cooperative entities integrated marginalized residents into democratic governance while equally distributing profits among members. Besides economic development, neighborhood cooperatives participated in heady debates over urban land use, applying egalitarian cooperative principles to modernize New Orleans’s crumbling infrastructure, monopolistic food distribution systems, and spotty welfare programs. As Gessler indicates, cooperative activists deployed street-level subsistence tactics to mobilize continual waves of ordinary people seizing control over mainstream economic and political institutions.

Book Manitoba Producers Willingness to invest in New Generation Cooperatives

Download or read book Manitoba Producers Willingness to invest in New Generation Cooperatives written by Tasha J. Turko and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Generation Cooperative (NGC) has been a popular form of farmer-owned enterprise widely adopted by producers in the United States, especially in North Dakota and Minnesota. The adoption rate of this organizational form has been comparatively slow in the province of Manitoba, which is geographically adjacent to these two states. The objective of this thesis is to ascertain which factors affect Manitoba producers' willingness-to-invest and willingness-to-commit to NGCs, as well as potential monetary investment in NGCs. Finally, whether or not these decisions are affected by producer farm type is determined. Data collected from surveying Manitoba producers are analyzed using ordered logit to examine the producers' willingness-to-invest and willingness-to-commit, and tobit to examine the producers' potential monetary investment in NGCs. Further statistical analysis is shown through producer profiles, odds ratios and marginal effects. Positive and significant associations are found between a producer's self-assessed knowledge about NGCs, having been approached, farm size, education level and their willingness-to-invest, while there is a negative association with age. Self-assessed knowledge level and contracted commodities have positive and significant associations with willingness-to-commit. Finally, self-assessed knowledge level, having been approached, farm size, net cash income, minimum rate of return required, age, and education level have positive and significant associations with potential monetary investment, while production of commodities under contract and risk-aversion levels have negative associations with potential monetary investment.
